I have just listened to In Absentia, and have really dug it.  Really some great music.  I was just wondering out of there other stuff, what is the best?  And what would you say is the heaviest, becayse the heavy guitar riffs are awesome, but I wish there were some more.

Also, my favorite song is The Creator Has A Mastertape.  Awesome song.  If anyo of there other stuff is like that song, or along those lines, I would definatly like hearing it, so let me know.

Thanks.

If you like their heavier side try Deadwing, almost as awesome as In Absentia.

Also check out Lightbulb Sun and their excellent live album Warszawa.

Ah, definetely Deadwing. Deadwing was my first Porcupine Tree album and I was all about hard riffs back then. Then I tried In Absentia, and nowadays they both seem to be Porcupine's best to me, I have a couple of their other albums but none of them come quite to the level of those two.

I'm also going to follow this thread. First of all because the band is famous enough, but I haven't heard them yet, and 2nd of all because I'm going to see them live.

You can still find it.

And there is a lot of PT's extensive discography that is very hard to find, you just have to know where to look.

It took me forever to find XM,XMII and the Futile EP but I found them eventually.

Deadwing is the heaviest and in my opinion the BEST Porcupine Tree Album.

Ive seen no one mention The Sky Moves Sideways . I was also wondering, is this one worth getting? The "The Sky...Phase 1-2" seem to interest me.

Deadwing and then move your way down their discography. And believe me, the more you hear the early albums, the more you'll like them. I stoped at Stupid dream for a while.

If you like "Creator has a mastertape" (i think it's a boring song really) than go for Deadwing for sure.

Personally i like Lightbulb sun, Stupid dream and Sky moves sideways much more than Deadwing (and also somewhat more than In absentia).

Certainly worth getting . Might be their best especially if you like Pink Floyd.
If you like Sky than Coma divine will also interest you. The version of Moonloop played here is better
than on Sky and it also has the spacy "Radio active toy"

What do you PT fans think of Recordings?

An amazing album for a bunch of b-sides.

I'll agree with the rest here - If you liked In Absentia, get Deadwing. They're both really good albums.

For me, I have their 2nd, 3rd and 4th releases (still trying to get Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, which seem to be hard to find, because they're out of print, I believe). Up The Downstair is a bit odd, but I haven't listened to it much lately. Signify is pretty good, and closer to the sound they would eventually get on In Absentia. The Sky Moves Sideways is a good album that I just recently good a couple weeks ago. The 2-Phase title track is pretty good, as is the rest of the album.

If you get any of their first four studio albums (the three mentioned above and On The Sunday Of Life), make sure you get the newer, digi-pack versions as they're two CDs (at least the 2nd-4th albums are), and contain lots of music for your money (I paid anywhere between 15-20 for each of them).

Between Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, which would you all say is worth getting first? I'm certain many will say the latter.

-M.

Yes i also like Lightbulb sun more. But my firends like Stupiid dream more. I think it's a matter
of taste here.

Lightbulb sun is spacier somewhat closer to Sky moves sideways  with tracks like Hatesong and Russia on ice.

Stupid dream is a sort of mellow In absentia

Both are good but if I had to pick between the two definitely Lightbulb Sun.

Lightbulb sun is good, and Signify is also worthy of checking out I'd say.

Deadwing is very odd -- it's a mix between In Absentia and Lightbulb sun. Come to think of it, Steve Wilson is the only music writer of today I can think of who can make 5 albums that are very different and yet so similar.

If you like In Absentia, go to Deadwing, then to Lightbulb Sun, and then Stupid Dream.

With Porcupine Tree, once you get used to the idea of Pink Floyd doing metal and ambient, it's hard to lose.

In Absentia,Lightbulb Sun,Stupid Dream & Deadwing are all top notch albums and I think if you like one you'll love them all.

Signify is a good album but whilst it was the first PT album I heard and loved it at the time,I cant help preferring the later stuff.

The Sky Moves Sideways is a great album too,but very different to the later stuff. The tracks are much longer and spacier and you could easily like this period of PT and hate the later stuff and visa-versa.

I think that everything from 1994 onwards is very strong and why they aren't packing out the arenas is a mystery to me.

Wonderful band and highly recommended to anyone who likes their Prog Rock to rock.....

Deadwing, no doubt... but there is a lot of great heavy songs at "Lightbulb Sun", "Stupid Dream" and even "Sky moves Sideways" (very pinkfloydian but there's some great stuff on "Dislocated Day" and "Sky Moves...")...

But if you are looking something heavy with raw guitars and that stuff, PT maybe isn't the right choice... But WHAT A BAND!!

You ought to experience Deadwing, in agreement with other opinions, as the album is relatively closer to appeal into a budding sense of taste, in specialty to approach a heavier side of prog, I believe. Evolving into the discography, you should consider delving into Lightbulb Sun, which is yet another album (excuse me: great album) accessible to those developing a fondness, I guess. Afterwards, amaze yourself at a completely different scenery provided by Signify, then pursue for some earlier albums to establish comparison (if you become interested in the aquaintance, of course). Should you happen to encounter Coma Divine, in a record store, under the circumstances displayed in brackets, be sure to purchase it, as it's an outstanding (not to mention pleasantly surprising) live performance, coming to depict veracity into the analogy with live gigs as artful playground for musicians.

My own personal favourites are In Absentia (IMO their most complete album), Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and The Sky Moves Sideways. I find Stupid Dream has a few gems but seems transitional and lacks focus and confidence. Signify too is patchy, it has the wonderful Dark Matter (one of their finest) and the excellent Every Home is Wired but there's a lot of aimless filler, again it feels directionless. Sky Moves Sideways is a surprisingly good album, the fullest realisation of the band's spaciness. There are sundry other excellent tracks scattered across a variety of releases and perhaps the best way to go is to get Deadwing and In Absentia and then perhaps the Stars Die: The Delirium Years compilation. There's great stuff on there from the first period of PT. Recordings has some cool stuff too like Buying New Soul. Funny but even the b-sides are often great, the two tracks on the Lazarus single from Deadwing, So Called Friend and the gorgeously mellow Half Light are well worth seeking out. It's also worth giving a listen to the Blackfield album, which is a real grower.

You should check out Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun.  If you want to listen to early Porcupine Tree I would advise you to get Coma Divine: Live in Rome its one of my favorite live albums.  The only bad part about it is i heard that steve wilson re-recorded his vocals on the live album, and re-released in a digipak jewel case in 2000.  It's stilla great live record though

I find it funny. I am a fairly new fan of the band, but I discovered them backwards from the way people are discovering them these days(In Absentia or Deadwing).

I downloaded 'The Sky Moves Sideways' and 'Coma Divine' one day, and found it to be pretty interesting. The next day I found a copy of 'Up The Downstair', and that album hooked me for some reason. Funny it's not been mentioned yet, as it is a great album. One of my favorites, and a wonderfull addition to my CD collection.

After spending the last six to seven months diving into the world of Porcupine Tree, I find my favorites are Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Up the Downstair, and Deadwing. Really though, you can't go wrong with any of Porcupine Tree's albums.

I also recomend Steve Wilson's side project Blackfield. The self titled album is dark, mellow, and gloomy, but really well done in my opinion. It's not a heavy riff fest or anything of that sort though, but it makes for a great rainy day album. A new album is expected sometime this year I believe.

yes if you like kind of experimental trance spacey stuff you'll love it. i personally think there is no such thing as a PT album thats not worth it. I own every one except for the singles.

I recently got "Sky" and it's absolutely amazing! There's a really cool heavy song on it - "Dislocated Day", but the album is basically very spacy, trippy, mellow, atmospheric.... very Floyd, haha.

I feel like it's the Wish You Were Here album of Porcupine Tree.

as what I heard (not all albums), I'd said that there's at least two incarnations oif Procupine Tree.

first, Floyd-like. then it's Staircase Infinities, The Sky Moves Sideways (huh, I thought of Wish You were Here too), Metanoia and so on.

second is more MTV-like song-oriented rock/grunge, but newerthless pretty good. these are In Absentia, Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and Recordings (not sure, is it a collection or album).

Everything they've done is brilliant, but IMO, In Absentia and Deadwing are their weakest albums(they're not bad, mind you, but just not as good as the rest of their catalogue).

I'd have to agree with Stupid Dream, Signify and The Sky Moves Sideways as albums to check out next.. but even On The Sunday Of Life and Voyage 34 are great albums in their own right.

The Sky moves sideways still remains my favourite... actually I am more of a fan of their 'old' era than the newer stuff... but I don't think they have a single album that I dislike!

Deadwing is also an album that continues the path that PT followed with In Absentia, although it is more ambient and atmospheric.Tongue

Well if you like the heavy stuff then absolutely Deadwing.  However some of their other albums such as Signify have a few heavy songs but besides Signify, In Absentia, and Deadwing the rest is quite mellow, spacy and airy.  They are  more on the ambient and light side early on with lots of sounds happening in the background of the actual music.  but don't get me wrong all of their albums are amazing and no 2 albums sound alike.  Deadwing and In Absentia are the 2 that sound the most alike, just because of the style of songs that are on each album.
