Mid...

Lower than that, my left wrist and hand will ache
higher than that, will ruin my strumming and picking

The perfect position should be one that allows you to play without your right hand (wrist) angled. The lower the guitar hangs, the more difficult it gets. Once you figured out the right position re the right hand, you need to balance the guitar so that the neck is angled upwards - check whether you are able to reach all left hand "positions" (including low fret barré chords) without moving your shoulders.
In short: play in a comfortable position!

Mid-High. I find it impossible do do anything but power chords when it's low.

It actually depends for me, I use middle usually for solos and leads, low for ryths and chord proggressions, and mostly high for finger tapping leads. But mostly middle because its comfortable.

Well I am just recovering from some pretty extensive foot problems last year so I used to sit in my early gigs, but now that I can move around better than before I usually just do whats comfortable. Sometime its high like Howe and others its ni the middle. Never too low though, hurts my wrists.

I usually prefer to play sitting... you have total domain of the instrument that way and I think it's better for the back and shoulders... of course if you have to play standing up I prefer it at the ab-level, above the hip.
it's also important to angle the neck a bit up when you're doing scales, so that the wrist doesn't suffer

I tend to play at a medium height but I also play sitting down when using a slide.

Always high up like Steve Howe, or say, Michael Romeo. because then the left hand is optimal. I think you're supposed to reach the strings rather than your knees.

usually when i play the heavy metal stuff i hang it low (like james hetfield, really low!) and i play stuff like: metallica and fear factory (7 string for the last one, hell f**king yeah!), but i play the more complicated stuff like Dream Theater, Opeth or my own music i hang it medium. but when i practice skills i hang it between medium and high so i can focus more on my fingers. mostly i hang it low, i play far to much metal

high! about the same height as Petrucci, I guess. I used to hang it low when I was younger, but now I find high much more comfortable.

Pretty high, even higher than John Petrucci actually. That is when I play 25.5 inch scale guitars. I over stretch on 24.75 inch guitars, so I wear them at medium height. Some people say once they have it up too high they have trouble picking, but you soon get used to it, and your picking might actually improve.

Wait. Lifeson's is middle? I guess compared to BJA he is, but man Lifeson's is low in my book. Keep that sh*t up man. Don't go below the belly.
