McAfee Internet Security trial is nearly expiring on my PC at home, and was wondering wheather to download any free anti virus and internet protection or the major brands, which would be best?? ------------- CYMRU AM BYTH

Well, I use AVAST! Antivirus and haven't had any problems yet. And it's free for home use.

Other. And Norton is terrible. Because of some things Norton2006 didn't catch my computer crashed and I switched to Panda Antivrus and love it. -------------  |

| AVG & Avast are both fine and if anything better than plenty of ones that charge (I use AVG). I think the free version of each comes without firewall, but there are free firewalls too. I use Sygate for a firewall though, because I couldn't find any free ones which were configurable enough for some stuff I wanted to do (it shouldn't be a problem for most people though). |

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE picked up horrible spy componants like Zango Adware and Spyware better than the BT Yahoo Anti-Spy, provided by my ISP, BT's Anti Spy is not as good, lucky I downloaded Ad Aware SE.

what about free service to protect identity, you know any goog Privacy protection software?? I think Norman does them but any other, epecially free ones.

You should spend some time reasearching that company (Panda Software), maybe even check your region's business bureau for compaints (if you have such a thing in your area). I finally got rid of them after using them for about a year and haven't had any problems with viruses, worms, or the like in at least three years. Before, I had two of my machines crash due to worms, one of them three times in less than a year (and not all from the same viruses either). Also Panda spams the holy crap out of you once you get rid of their software, and I noticed a huge increase in spam traffic within days of cancelling my Panda subscription, so I'm quite sure they are selling my name and information to other companies. I'm still getting several emails a day from them over three years later. I have even blacklisted them on my mail provider's POP server, in my own email client software, and in my virus software, plus blocked their domain in my router's firewall, but the emails keep getting through using variations and alias address names. Back when I had Panda I also used to get Windows OS popup ads, which I had never seen before on any machine, and have never seen since getting rid of Panda. hmmm. okay, listen here. I live now on DSL connection, 24/7, so I did some investigations. Kaspersky is right out. no questions, just out. there goes BitDefender, Panda, Sophos, all out. Norton, Avast & NOD32 has some pros and cons. well secured, but pretty heavy. my choice was CA eTrust. a combination of eTrust Antivirus, eTrust PestPatrol (anti-*ware) and eTrust Firewall (based on ZoneLabs code). Firewall needs no special knowledge, works with programs, not with mysterious port numbers, also kills ADs, Flash, scripts, pop-ups and so on. matter fact, I have not seen nor viruses, neither *wares for month or two - they just cannot penetrate firewall. ------------- yes, I know, my English is far from perfect. I comfortable with it. |

30MB all up - hardly heavy (NOD32 that is). That's the size of the installation folder. The service itself takes a meager 6MB of memory. Compare that to Norton's bloat. Read up on how it works before dismissing it. Or did you mean pricey? |

Without paying money, I still think there's nothing better than AVG on Windows and now I've switched to KPF for firewall. If you're going to pay for AV, I don't see any point in getting anything but NOD32 (I haven't ever seen Kaspersky; apparently it's comparable)
OS X seems to have a lot less choice in terms of AV stuff but ClamAV does the job. |
