So, who here is also a Metal fan along with progressive rock?
Metal has some of the best musicians to offer, and some of the most interesting vocals, so I thought it deserved it's own fan thread.
My favorite metal bands are Mudvayne, Pantera, System of a Down, Machine Head, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage to name a few.
Who else likes metal, and who are your favorites?

I'm in my late 30s, long after I'm supposed to have stopped listening to metal, and I'm still heavily into it.
Listing what I'm into would take too damn long.

My dad is forty nine and he is into metal big time. Not the tame sh*t either, but the really heavy stuff like Mudvayne, Slipknot, Pantera and more. He likes a ton of other stuff, and his favorite band is Yes. I told him he needs to check this site out, he would fit right in.

Anyone else listen to Machine Head, cause no one else has mentioned them. They aren't prog, but they are just some excellent musicians putting out some good heavy metal.

I saw them live in Paris, and they seemed to me very boring, evben so that I decided to leave the showroom after half an hour... I even preferred Napalm Death's performance (opening band). Better listen to the eponymous album by Deep Purple ...
Metal albums I would recommend :
Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising force (actually I dug it just because it features Barriemore Barlow, ex-Jethro Tull member, behind the drumkit)
Annihilator : "Alice in hell"
Overkill : "horrorscope"
Coroner : "mental vortex"
Megadeth : "rust in peace"
iron maiden : "seventh son of a seventh son"
voivod : "the outer space", "voivod" (their last opus is very good)
the snakes : "once bitten" (a tribute band to whitesnake and david coverdale, fronted by the excellent Jorn Lande, later in ARK)
metallica : "...and justice for all"
paradise lost : "icon"

on most of your choices (unfortunately, Slipknots 'Iowa' rates as the worst metal album Ive heard to date)
Interested to hear what other metal rates in your favour.
Other faves of mine include: Strapping young lad; My Dying Bride (when they stick to 'doom'); Cradle of Filth (from when they finally mixed that piercing organ to the background and decided to become a metal band (around 2000-2001 from memory)); Celtic Frost (thou I havent heard them for a while); King Diamond; and some of the old faves like Black Sabbath; Motorhead (yes they r roc n roll); and Metallica (up to and including ... And justice for all)

Budgie aren't really metal - they're more hard rock but they influenced many future metal bands. I really like the early's 70's/ late 60s proto-metal like Blue Cheer, Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore, Led Zeppelin I, Trapeze, Leaf Hound, Iron Butterfly, Dust, Jerusalem, etc

From the Netherlands and you know of Buffalo... now that's surprising. Their debut mentioned above was very Sabbathish. Their next release was trash. Only made two, I believe. Great singer.
Another for the off-topic- Budgie: Australian bird, American band; Buffalo American animal, Australian band.. sorry, it's late.

I believe most of PA members (not all) are also metalheads
I started with Bay Area thrash (Metallica, Exodus, Overkill etc.) and Maiden of course
I also enjoyed the NWOSDM (new wave of Swedish death metal) which is currently declining... bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity are producing fairly commercial albums..
and I also listen everything from Camel to Emperor...

I think this is because they both have so much in common, both pride themselfs on profecent playing (most of them; I can reasonably say that some metal artists could outplay the prog greats and the other way around.) and both are heavly influnced by classical music. The only difference is metal is less interested in the Jazz of prog and therefore tend to be more structured and are more about the band than indivdual. Metal is also more about "sight and sound" as well as emotional effect which is evedent from their brand of classical influnce. Alot of metal is a direct result of prog (Iron Maiden for example) and is a natarul evolution from seventy's prog. If you look at the list of influences from a metal band, amoung the Led Zepplen/Deep Purple/Black Sabbath listings 1 out of two times you will see Genesis listed and mabye even Yes as well as a slew of other prog bands. Just like the "original" (as in originality) prog groups did not emulate their influnces only were inspired by them to make something new, metal did that in the eightys. I always thought that Neo-prog were just copyists that did not dare to fully branch out and explore what was going on. A real simple way of expressing what I am saying is if alot of metal bands from the eightys to today started thier carrers in 1970 they would have probobly been prog bands. (note... this post is obviously not about "all" metal bands, because metal is a style and not a genre it encompasses all genres and therefore some are not relevent to this discussion).
