Aesome to see The Mars Volta at number four in art rock, I love De-Loused in the Comatarium.  Cool to see Rush at the top; Moving Pictures is excellent.  Also awesome to see Al Di Miola in Jazz/Rock fusion.  That guy is an amazing guitar player.

@Abstrakt: Remember that my lists are one album per artist.

@Dragon Phoenix: They're #2 in Art Rock.

@all: Feel free to post your own version of the charts ... but remember that the lists that I posted aren't my own favorite albums, but the current chart positions according to the archives top 100 lists.

The purpose of me posting these lists is to get some feedback on how you like them ... and whether you'd like to see these kind of lists on the front page instead of the current top 100.

i have misunderstood this topic. I thought we should list our favourite albums of each genre...?
so the list is just copied from the site?

Posted By: MikeEnRegalia
Date Posted: April 13 2006 at 10:47

Well, not just copied. I simply took the genre top 100 lists and removed "duplicate artists", so that only the best album of each artist remains.

But surely you can use this thread to post your own "ideal" lists!

Holy crap! Neo-prog was massacred!  Marillion and IQ dominated the list before, but with them gone, much more variety. That Landmarq albums isn't that good though, must write a review for it.

I guess that when compiling such a list I should also count the omitted albums and mention them:

2. Arena - The Visitor (8*)

*=Number of albums in the top 100

That would be very helpful. Arena is incredibly overrated (for lack of a better word) though.

I do too. What I don't get is why most people like the albums Visitor through Contagion. I think those albums are basically condensed prog metal with keyboards. Not my thing.

I kind of like Contagion ... but I always thought of it as (neo) prog metal "without teeth". It's well composed, good musicianship, but I miss the dynamics between mellow, gentle and aggressive, brutal which good prog metal (and prog rock) usually provides.

I think the one album of each artist list is much more helpfull than the current one, i would rather see this list on the main page, but i would be good to keep the current list, maybe adding a link to the list.

I don't like it at all the genre division is something sobjective and irrilevant IMO...

The current top 100 list is better.

Gawd, you're gonna need more than one page for that lot - I think I counted about 17 categories! How about having just one featured category on the home page, and then after a week another one takes over. They can keep rotating like that, and it stays a bit fresher ....

i meant that i agreed with having a list of the top 100 of all genres but only having one album per band, but your idea is intresting too.

Good idea! Another option would be to group the lists:

  • Symphonic + Neo Prog (40 artists)
  • Art Rock + Jazz-Rock/Fusion + Canterbury (20 artists)
  • Prog Folk + Indo/Raga + Italian Symphonic (20 artists)
  • RIO/Avant + Zeuhl + Experimental/Post (20 artists)
  • Prog Metal (20 artists)
  • Proto-Prog + Prog Related (if they get listed on the front page at all)

Just a suggestion! I would also only mention the artist, not the album. That would make the list much shorter, and we could list more artists. And we could then also remove the artificial limits and list all artists that are in the db (using criteria like avg_rating >= 4.2 AND n_ratings > 1).

Oops, that'll teach me to read it properly!!

On the 'featured genre' idea ..... you could maybe change the albums around at random on a daily basis from the top 50 (or something) of that genre, rather than just take the top few every time. Just a thought.

Gawd, you're gonna need more than one page for that lot - I think I counted about 17 categories! How about having just one featured category on the home page, and then after a week another one takes over. They can keep rotating like that, and it stays a bit fresher ....

Ahh...so Prog Metal is the only category with one genre, therefore more artists. This has been noted.

Maybe, yeah, though I do think it would be nice to see the album artwork on the front page - a picture paints a thousand words etc

with that you'll have more variety on styles. It would help, because with the current list, for example if you want to see which are the best zehul albums ( based on ratings), youi take a look at the list and you see mainly symphonic, neo and prog metal bands, and it's hard for you to find what you're looking for.
