Interesting, but ultimately, self defeating...

Mandate seems to be a popular word to abuse lately. All it means is that the people give their permission to the government to act on their behalf; anyone who wins in a democratic election has a mandate by definition. Many people seem to be using the word to mean something like "overwhelming percentage", which is obviously not the case either. But who expects either the government or media to stick with the boring truth?

anybody hear about the guy who killed himself at the WTC site because he was so upset that GWB got re-elected? Now that's taking it too seriously...he should have just stuck a "Sorry!" sign on his cat and taken a picture. The world would still probably think of him as sad, foolish or crazy, but at least he'd still be alive...

How many times do you hear people cursing America, here in the UK or anywhere in Europe. Critics of the US are typically guilty of mass generalisation, saying things like ' I hate Americans' I cringe whenever I hear people say this, or 'I hate the French' or I hate Muslims' or 'Bloody Jews' or whatever.. Its easier to write off an entire nation because of the actions of a small number of politicians. Easy, but unfair in the extreme.

Many of us on this side of the pond are frightened by what we percieve as the hi-jacking of US politics by the Christian right. the 'sorry everybody.com website is testimony to the fact that many Amercians are probably wary of this too. It may be self defeating to apologise for the re-election of GWB, but it is a demonstration of this presidents controversy.

It genuinely pleases me to hear this kind of opinion as it shows that there is more to life than the black/white, right/wrong mentality that plagues much of western civilisation.

As hard as it will be for some to believe, the re-election of Bush will have it's benefits as well as it's disadvantages but as is the way with many media sources, bad news always sells better than good.

Speaking from a Europeans point of view, those of us who have freinds in the US will know that the US is unfairly represented in our media. As I have said I hate generalisations. The American freinds I have made over the years are very moderate people, very open to 'outsiders' popints of view about world affairs. Some are so cynical about their own governments handling of things since 9/11, they are now convinced that they are being submerged in bullsh!t everytime they turn on a TV or buy a newspaper.

To be honest, my deeper feelings and instincts about politics in Washington and in London are pretty dark, and not for this forum.
