Can you guys recommend a selection of guitarists/bands to inspire a 12 yr old  who is learning  the electric guitar. He  plays very decent Stratocaster and Gibson replicas. He loves Malmsteen and Van Halen and a few of the Blues guitarists but  I thougt (sneaky old me) this might be a very good way of introducing him to the world of prog at a young, tender & impressionable age ...

so ... whaddya think? What are your most esteemed  reccies?

John Macloughlin in Mahavisnu Orchestra, Steve Hackett in Genesis, Steve Howe in Yes, Robert Fripp of King Crimson, Alex Lifeson of Rush.

For a learner Dave Gilmour and Syd Barret of Pink Floyd are easier and and a better place to start, these other guys above a real experts.
