Radiohead call music industry 'retards'

Speaking about http://www.nme.com/artists/arctic-monkeys" class="artistLink - Arctic Monkeys ' rise to fame, Yorke said: "A good thing for new music would be more of the mainstream loosening up a bit and letting stuff through. Radio 1 won't play anything f**king decent. You need to sort the radio out."

He added: "The fact that poor http://www.nme.com/artists/arctic-monkeys" class="artistLink - Arctic Monkeys are getting so much attention is purely based on the fact that the mainstream music business is such a bunch of f**king retards as far as I'm concerned."

Well I don't think that the radio industry are a bunch of "retards" (I'm sure
you could find many people that would find that offensive) but the radio
industry is as corrupt as anything else playing terrible standard music
without surfacing anything interesting or new.

But glittering prizes

Nowadays record companies are only interested in bands/artists that will sell CDs straight away. They are not interested in signing people with potential and letting them develop over a couple of releases. Anyone whose sales don't meet the requirements are dropped. This is why most of the major prog bands are not on the major labels.

What Thom is saying is nothing that hasn't already been said by countless other musicians.  He makes a valid point, but even though there might be those in the music biz who like less commerical music, their corporate sponsors want only what they deem the most popular music to be played on the radio.  Therefore, in their opinion, they can sell their products to the most people.  There are many great rock bands, jazz musicians and modern classical composers that go unnoticed as a result.  Sad, but that is reality for the foreseeable future.

This is an opinion that I'm sure will get alot of criticism on PA.

Proggers have been saying this for thirty odd years and it is no trite matter.  It deserves all the foul mouthness and hostility that one can muster up. Manufactuing Consent is a must to read or even just rent the video.

KID A is damn right!   Yes is not recording new songs these days 'cause they can't get a decent contract. Nobody is interested in new materail from Yes in the industry!

I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

Haha! I don't always agree with this website users, but isn't it just fascinating when a radical point of view is being introduced and everybody agrees with it?

Thom Yorke isn't the first musician to say this. He is the first to say it in such an immature way though.....

Yeah, his comments are hardly revolutionary. Maybe his message would be stronger if he didn't come off sounding like a highschooler.
