If you are talking about the Genesis concert film done at Shepperton Studios in October 1973, I have a copy of that concert, and originally it wasn`t a bootleg. It was an ofiicial video, produced by Tony Stratton-Smith. The film starts with the credit "Tony Stratton-Smith presents Genesis in Concert". Maybe the copies available today are bootlegs, but the film was produced by the Charisma Records` boss. He also was their manager until mid 1973. I didn`t buy this DVD. It was given as a gift to me.

More details: http://www.genesis-movement.org - http://www.genesis-movement.org

in the Videos section in the main menu. It was filmed in October 31, 1973. Some fragments of this video appear in the "Genesis- A History" VHS/Laser Disc  video which was released by Polygram Video in the U.S. and Virgin Video in England in 1991. I added this video to the Progarchives` Genesis Discography in 2005.

If it must be deleted go ahead, but I'd see it as unnecessary censorship and wouldn't please
PA users that are interested in that DVD they may have seen in their local shops.

1.  Can a DVD that's widely available be an illegal 'bootleg' in the same sense as obscure live recordings?
Erik, you may be more skilled in telling the difference between 'official' and 'unofficial' DVD,
but - in the case of Genesis Live - do you think the product should be just ignored by fans?

2.  In this case the product indeed IS THE THING, as far as I know it's the only available DVD/video
of Gabriel-era Genesis, and when I saw it in shop, I was sorry not seeing it in PA helping me to
decide if it's worth buying. I honestly felt like doing a favour by adding it and reviewing it.
(I wouldn't have if I had been completely disappointed to it. I gave it 3 stars.)

3.  I think PA is full of compilation/live CD's that are not worthy. Even Genesis has one (LP): Rock Theatre
(I wrote its first review but I'd be actually pleased to see that one deleted). Also e.g. KANSAS
Dust in the Wind  that I bought with two euros and carried it to Salvation Army immediately. But official or
not, they are not even nearly in the same league what it comes to the value of interest

4.  What all the other PA members think? Should Genesis Live DVD be deleted or not?

Yours sincerely,  Matti   (my first reaction to Erik's message was kinda baffled yesterday,
but I understand the point and accept the majority's decision, whichever it will be.)

IMO, the Shepperton Film is very good, a very good example of a Genesis concert with Gabriel and Hackett. It is of historic interest. But, if the PA Administrators think that it should be deleted from the PA database, I respect their decision.

Hello Matti.

I fully believe in your honest intentions but a while ago Prog Archives decided not to accept bootleg CD's and DVD's (like from Pink Floyd, UK and now Genesis).

In my opinion a bootleg is a not officially released item but you can have your questions about the Classic Rock  releases that contain material that is not supported by the band like King Crimson, Fripp is not amused with the Inside King Crimson DVD!

The Genesis Live bootleg DVD contains Shepperton 73, The Midnight Special 73 and Montreal 74 (black and white show).

I own many early Genesis(1970-1977) bootleg DVD's with very rare footage, I would like to write about it but Prog Archives has decided not to accept bootlegs. That's the policy and in my opinion we have to respect that, as Guillermo also states.

So sorry Matti, don't consider me as the Progrock Inquisition  ....

3 stars  —  This is a low-budget DVD (I paid 7 euros) capturing the classic Genesis in three different concerts. It is the Shepperton Studios material (tracks 1-5 to be exact) from October 1973 that makes it worth having, the two others have pretty low sound/picture quality - and besides that, are partly abridged in a terrible manner. Unfortunately that concerns most notably 'Firth of Fifth' filmed in Canada. Otherwise the song selection repeats the same titles as the Shepperton concert, which is no perfect either in picture clarity, but it serves its purpose well enough: this is a truly CLASSIC STUFF! This is how Gabriel-led Genesis show looked like in those old days of masks and costumes.
It leaves no doubt that visually it all focuses on Gabriel and his acting. The rest of the band just plays in the background without even trying to gain attention. For example when the camera rarely shoots Banks leaning over his Mellotron, the picture could just as well be stuck in your DVD player. The directing & cutting also resembles an old art film like Nosferatu, especially the opening number 'Watcher of the Skies' in which our angel is wearing batwings and a cloak.
And you surely know the other costumes too: Britannia in 'Moonlit Knight', a flower in 'Supper's Ready', the old man in the final section of 'Musical Box'... Another nice thing are Peter's intro speeches, especially before 'Supper's Ready'. Those who have heard Genesis Archive vol 1 know the story of Henry rubbing his body into grass etc... "To you this may mean Jerusalem Boogie but to the birds it meant that the supper was ready." Ha ha!
Even with a poor technical quality it is obvious that any Genesis fan makes a good little investment with this rare stuff.

Reading your review, Matti, I still remember very vividly the first time I watched early Genesis footage, it was so exciting and thrilling, especially the closing section from The Musical Box with Peter wearing the old man mask, GOOSE BUMPS, it was like I had entered another world  !

Excuse my ignorance, but all unofficial releases aren't bootlegs, are they? Many compilations, for example, aren't exactly official, right? This Genesis DVD is widely available and it's even advertised on this site, so is it actually a bootleg or not?

It's presumably available as a bootleg, but I downloaded mine as a legitimate (but unofficial) recording. I don't think it belongs here in the context of this site - on the other hand I'd be happy if the context of this site changed to allow unofficial recordings in order to represent a better history of the bands involved. Of course it presumably gets a little hard to police then.

I bought my copy in a local store here in Norway! So it's very unlikely a bootleg! I've seen it available on many online stores too!

Maybe it's been previously available as a bootleg, but has been legally released in 2004? I bought mine at a department store, so it's highly unlikely that it's a bootleg.
