| Who are the best prog tribute bands? Now that there are few of the original 70s bands still going (or they're a shadow of their former selves) does anyone keep the tradition up in fine style? I've seen Re-Genesis, who make a good fist of playing (and theatrically performing) Gabriel-era Genesis, and Off the Wall doing Floyd - are there others worth seeing?? |

Here in Argentina the "clone" bands are pretty famous. We have two big Pink Floyd cover bands: Ummagumma and The End, the last being the msot succesful and then there are also some Queen bands like Dios salve a la reina (God save the queen) and Dr Queen or something like that...for me it´s just a mirror of our popular music scene...it so crappy that we have to go see cover bands...what a shame ------------- "You want me to play what, Robert?"

Over The Garden Wall is a Genesis "tribute" band based in Toronto, I believe. They give an excelent Gabriel's Genesis performance (costumes, etc) and early Phil Collins Genesis, too. Great sound! Also, I don't know if they are around anymore, but I saw a Yes tribute band about 10 years ago called Yesshows in a small concert hall in Niagara Falls, NY. Knowing how hard it is to not only play, but replicate the classic Yes playlist (Close To The Edge was played that night!) I went in with an open mind. They were fantastic! The singer sat on a stool, behind a music stand, which he read lyrics from. Now, it's my understanding that this was one of their first shows, and the guy was new, so you gotta cut him some slack. I believe the singer was very dissapointed in his performance that night and quit. Too bad! He may be the only person I have seen sing Jon Anderson, but he was as good as he had to be. I've heard Jon himself give worse performances. ------------- Arguing with anonymous strangers on the internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be or seem to be self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time. |

Thanks Grimm - I know, I've SEEN Jon give some pretty piss-poor performances - difficult to keep up that level of high-pitched intensity I suppose... though at his best he was pretty much unbeatable. Never seen a Yes tribute band yet - though I see Steve Howe is joining "Fragile," a UK Yes tribute band, in June and July - it's a four-date tour in the South of England and Wales, but I might venture down and give them a try...

ReGenesis are a fine band, I've seen them many times - well worth checking out Think Floyd, too; saw them a few years ago & came away impressed. I don't know where you live in the UK, but if you're anywhere near the Bolton area, I'd highly recommend Noddy's Puncture for a night of very well played ELP: 
Tom (above) was somewhat surprised during a gig a year or so ago when he turned around halfway through 'Tarkus' & Emerson was standing behind him; what could he do? He just stepped back & let the writer take over... -------------

Oh yes, I do remember them and I don't think they are together anymore. I remember seeing them in the early 80's in Toronto.
Incredible likeness to Genesis in sound and emotion.
