Have you ever found that your favorite album by a band turns out to be considererd by many as a lesser work or may even be derided?
For example, my favorite Yes album is Tormato and I often find myself defending that position.
Is Grace Under Pressure your favorite Rush album when everyone else insists that it should be Moving Pictures?

For me itīs Falling into Infinity-Dream Theater. Takes a few listens to get into it. But of all the Dream Theater albums, this is the one I havenīt grown tired of. Most people consider it their worst.

I do enjoy many of the songs from the most hated album by Yes, "Union".
But not my favourite, of course.
And my least favourite is Big Generator, but it's not that bad...

The Flower Kings - World of Adventures (not very liked, but I think it is one of their best)
Roine Stolt - The Flower Kings - Probably his least liked solo album since the 90s ... As good as World of Adventures, if not better.
Rick Wakeman - White Rock : One of his lowest-rated albums in the 70s ... One of the best soundtrack albums ever recorded
Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Center of the Earth - Criticized by many, this album is almost perfect!

Guess what?......I love Tormato. See my name and signature. And I love it for all the "wrong" things that everyone critizice. I wouldn't take out a single note played by Wakeman, or Howe, and by the way, any other member. I think the battle of Wakeman, Howe and Squire to full every song with unlimmited melodies is adventurous and remarkable. Seems they are fighting to please me!
I've listening to it since 1980, on a very regular basis, and never get tired of it, honest.

I said almost just because the vocals in Journey are a bit too loud in the mix and the background music during narration is a bit too empty.
If those 2 things were taken care of, it would be on my top 10 for sure.
Its still my favourite wakeman album anyways.
White Rock is a wonderful instrumental album. The title track is one of the best synth workouts put on tape, the 2nd track has some of the best mellotron passages, the main riff/theme is memorable, laxx' is a wonderful experimental track, and the closer is as good as the highlights from Wives.

Ayreon : the Dream Sequencer, I always hear that this will not do and i have to like Human eq. or Electric castle better but i don't .
Spock's Beard : i like the first three albums more than "V", I'm not alone in this though.
King Crimson : I think Red is much better than In the court , I love Starless and Fallen angel from the latter on the other hand I don't like 20 Schizoid from the former only Epitaph and the title track are good songs here.
ELP : The only track of this band that i find really outstanding (at this moment) is Tarkus.

I don't know, I am "radical" in about 50% cases, disdaining most of the considered classics and having own favourites. I sometimes think I simply do not fit this site well, but then I think that since we listen to the same progressive groups together the contrast could prove useful.

You're right, Memowakeman, 'Discipline' is a very good album by King Crimson who, you'll have noticed, never gave two sh*ts about being 'in' with the scene. The album is very avantgarde for the early '80's and it just sounds like a big F*CK OFF to the whole New Wave/Post Punk scene of the time.
All credit to the genius that is Robert Fripp.

Thanks, pal.
I thought he looked like a member of Scandinavian death/black (can I say black? is it politically correct enough?).
Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the Scandinavian bands, except Entombed.
Thanks, anyway.
PS: You should check out the new Slayer album when it's out in June. They are the business!

No, you definitely can not say 'Black Metal'. 'Afroamerican Metal' is the right way!
Entombed are/were Death Metal, whereas their newer stuff is death'n'roll and really cheesy. Black Metal is a completely different sound, so I suppose for a person unfamiliar with the genre, At The Heart Of Winter would be an excellent introduction.
Seriously, get At The Heart Of Winter now! It is the epitome of coldness through music! And it is 10 times more progressive and technical than anything they'd released.
(oh, and yeah, I should have added that Immortal are indeed a BM group, but ATHOW is in no way a normal BM album)

I've always loved "Three sides live" by Genesis but over the years I've realized that a lot of folks think it's terrible. I wasn't bowled over by the original US version with the b-side studio cuts but the UK version with more live songs knocks me out. And the "In the Cage" medley is so powerful that I consider it one of their best performances EVER. But I seem to be in a minority when it comes to that album.

Although I`m not a big Rush fan I listen to Signals from time to time.

Rush: Test for Echo: (Perfectly balanced and executed)
Moody Blues: Question of Balance (Inspired through out)
Van Morrison: Hymns to the Silence (He puts it all in here)
Jimi Hendrix: Axis Bold As Love (In peak musical form)
Steve Ray Vaughn: In Step (Steve's on a roll here)
Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin I (Impossibly brilliant!)

Genesis' And Then There Were Three is one of my top favourite albums, as well as Duke and Three Sides Live.
Pendragon: Kow Tow is among my favourite albums.
Vangelis: I don't think he did anything better than his first album with Jon Anderson (okay, maybe some Aphrodite's Child tracks)
And you do agree with me that Grand Hotel is the best Procol Harum album, eh?
And Bruford did peak on Gradually Going Tornado, right?

I love Tormato and Drama, both fine albums.
I even think Circus of Heaven is good
My favorite Rush Albums are Hold Your Fire and Vapor Trails (people just don't understand Hold Your Fire, I dunno what the issue is? Probably Neil's best lyrics to date), although I think Test For Echo is a steaming pile (although I hear the fiftysomethings like it). Saying A Farewell to Kings is your favorite, however is not unusual - especially around here.
I think Thick as a Brick, Heavy Horses and Songs From the Wood are WAY better than Aqualung OR Stand Up and I even think Too Old To Rock & Roll is much better than it gets credit for.
I have also never met a person who thinks Frances is better than De-Loused. Maybe I just don't know the right people.
Foxtrot is the best Genesis album, btw...not that that statement is on topic, but whatever...

I am at the stage in my life that I don't really care what other people say. However, I do take anybody's recommendation. As long as the music is what I like and enjoy, it is the best music to me, and it doesn't matter what everybody else say. I used to argue about things like this, but then after some thought, I decided that I am the one that is listening to the music, so "I" am the only one that should matter. If you look at my list, you will know the kind of debate/argument I had before :
Marillion: Fugazi
Arena: Songs From The Lion's Cage
Shadowlnad: Looking Through Glasses
Pallas: The Sentinel
These are the ones that a lot of people say either rip off or downright bad. But I love them.

- I'm a rare case of a huge fan of Ummagumma. It's my favorite PF album, along with Saucerful, Meddle, and AHM. And I think that DSOTM is very overrated and I hate The Wall(see my reviews for both...

- My favorite Marillion album is CaS, and not Script or MC.
- I don't like SEBTP as much as NC and Foxtrot

Actually, The Number Of The Beast is the album most people claim to be Maiden's best. I also don't see how liking KC's Red and Tull's Aqualung shows that you are in a minority.

My favorite Pink Floyd album is...(gasp).. RELICS!
Not kidding, there's something in that collection that I find mesmerizing and addictive,..and magic...
Maybe it's because Syd Barret's spirit is scattered all over the place and there's a lot of Rick Wright too. Through the years I've been listening so much Waters' and Gilmour's stuff that I needed a change. Relics did it for me, and I wish there were more material from those sesions available. (recommendations?)
------------- I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

Did you see the DVD of YES in PHILADELPHIA?. Circus of Heaven is the song with the best sound in the mix. It's magical...
I'm a big fan of Circus of heaven. i had a lot of fun translating it to my language. Man, how beautiful! How wish I was in that Circus of Heaven someday, watching the parade......BTW I love Circ du Solei, the closest thing on Earth....and their music sounds progressive for me...what do you think?

I like Rush's Test for Echo very much. Actually, I really don't understand why people don't like it.

I like lots of "wrong" albums. Here's some of my favourites:
Camel: Breathless, Stationary Traveller
ELP: Emerson, Lake & Powell
Procol Harum: Grand Hotel
Moody Blues: Strange Times
Asia: Asia, Alpha, Aqua, Arena, Aura and Silent Nation
GTR: GTR
Genesis: Invisible Touch, We Can't Dance
Well those will do for now. And before you burn me as a heretic newbie I want to assure you all that I also like lots of "right" albums.

To Me, Test For Echo is uninspired.
It is not very progressive, beautiful, energetic or interesting. Just a bunch of OK AOR. I like the songs TFE, Driven and Resist - but I usually like every song on Rush albums. The lyrics are trite and hopelessly out of touch in a dated and middle-aged way and I find the album just dreadfully difficult to make it all the way through. It's very very soft and weak for the most part and I was embarrassed for them.
Fortunately, Vapor Trails is amazing.

I really like Vanden Plas, all of their albums; the same with Kamelot. Sometimes I get ashamed 'bout that, but, it's a guilty pleasure

I guess I prefer Riverside's "Out of Myself" over "Second Life Syndrome". Not a big differance as Rush's grace under pressure vs. Moving pictures, but still.

SOME WORDS OF A "CLASSIC" GENESIS FAN:
I'm a fan of CAS, and the alternative Album (did you heard "Run out of time?". What a song! But not included in CAS!!)
OK... GABRIEL, HACKETT, BANKS, RUTHERFOD & COLLINS ARE THE BESTS!
(I can see all those old Genesis fans trying to kill me...)
But I saw and listened to the CAS Tour (DVD LIVE IN KATOViCE -POLAND-, etc), and a lot of bootlegs.
And the band on stage was really great. RAY was really a showman (not a newbie). Mike and Tony, were perfect, as usual. Drenann is better and has more feeling than Daryl, and Nir Z did a great work.
It was an attempt of modernizing the band, without forgetting the past. With some young people, and new resources (acoustic set), a new composer, etc.
And Ray's voice is a mix between Gabriel, Collins, himself and something more obscure.
He sings the old stuff, the Collins songs, and the new material perfectly.
I was in great disagreement with the decision to suspend the recording of the second album.
It could have been really good!!

Where did I mention Red?
As for Tull, most people consider TAAB to be their best.

I prefer Nursery Crymes to Selling England by the Pound.
Duke is one of my favorite Genesis albums.
I prefer aqualung to thick as a brick.
Also, deloused is much better than Frances and the majority of volta fans agree with that.

I think I've become renowned for liking almost every prog and non prog album I've ever heard
For example my good people, I enjoy/love/have sexual relations with the following albums -
- Tales From Topographic Oceans (Over the past 2/3 weeks this has become my second favourite Yes album after CttE)
- Tormato
- 90125
- Big Generator
- ...And Then There Were Three
- Duke
- Islands!
- Lizard
- In the Wake of Poseidon
- Third (Heard someone call it a mess, That's not on!)
- I also can appreciate the Queen albums after the first five! News of the World is one of my favourites.
- The Pink Floyd records after Waters, You know what they are!
- I also think Brain Salad Surgery should be in the top 5 prog albums!
Ricochet is going to sl*g me now
Great thread!!

Time and a Word is one of my favourite Yes albums
