I've just been playing Closer To The Heart on Windows Media Player 10 and it jumps in the same place every time, a bit like records used to do with scratches.
When I play the same MP3 file with RealPlayer, it plays with no problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue with WMP?

If it's encoded in VBR and has anything that isn't quite standard, this will often be picked up by one player but not another. I don't know any more than that

Thanks goose.

Er, what's VBR?

Variable Bit Rate. Some players can't handle it, although from experience Media Player is not one of them.

Have you checked to see if there are current updates available for your version WMP10? Just do a microsoft update check and see if it appears in your list of updates available. Update link is in the left side of control panel in XP or at the top of the start panel all other versions of windows.

It works too. I have reencoded many unplayable (by WMP) Mp3s and had excellent results.

I tried it on one track and it made no difference. I will try it on a few more MP3s, if not I'll just have to stick to RealPlayer, which is fine except there doesn't seem to be a Last fm plugin for it, so I can't upload my track info.

Why can't you use e. g. Winamp to play your files? It's free to download. I use it and haven't got any problems yet.

Thanks Tuzvihar, Winamp seems to work fine - no jumps and it has a plug-in for Audioscrobbler.
Thanks everyone.

I have issues with WMA, I really don't like that program.  Hardly any of my WMAs show up on last.fm, which is really annoying.  I have a WMP plug-in for WinAMP and that doesn't solve the last.fm problem either.  WinAMP is fine with MP3s, not a single problem (except some Bubblemath ones I was playing the other day didn't show up on last.fm for some unknown reason).  It's just WMAs!

Can somebody recommend a free MP3 ripper to me?

It is weird, it's annoying.  I like the ID3 tags on MP3s anyhow, I guess I'll have to convert my WMAs to MP3s, that'll solve it.  I just need a free ripper now.

Geck0, I've heard nothing but good things about winLAME:

http://winlame.sourceforge.net/index.php - http://winlame.sourceforge.net/index.php

It is the only MP3 encoder I know of that supports true gapless playback for those few MP3 players with firmware that can play gapless MP3 (the only players I know that definitely play gapless MP3 are the Rio Karma & iRiver H120/140 running the open source Rockbox firmware).

I had a look at that, something stopped me downloading, I cannot remember what!

I've downloaded it now, I'll give it a go.  I already have a LAME FLAC decoder somewhere, so that's cool.
