Wow! What a fantastic selection It WAS a good year for prog. A slap in the face for all those who says it was dead by then.. ![](smileys/smiley17.gif)
My vote goes to Yes, Going for the One, but's it's no easy choice, when set against Genesis and Rush.. ![](smileys/smiley5.gif)

A tie between Animals and Going For The One, I slightly prefer Animals.
Oxygene is from 1976, isn't it?

Animals, though Wind and Wuthering would be my preference if it actually came out in '77 instead of right at the end of '76.

Agreed!
I have to vote for Animals as I probably play it more than any other choice and it is my favorite Pink Floyd album.

National Health's debut for me, although Tull's and Floyd's albums were both among their best and prove that prog was still alive and kicking in 77. I've always found it ironic that many prog 'dinosaurs' released some of their most commercially successful albums and had massively successful tours at the time that punk allegedly killed prog stone dead - and I speak as one who enjoyed punk as well.

Great list, Andrew, what a prolific year 1977 was!
My favorite is A Farewell To Kings by Rush. I still remember very vividly that I knew Rush from their live album All The Worls's A Stage, it was a bit too heavy for me but I was stunned by the skil so the power trio. And then there was that very positive review about A Farewell To kings in a know Dutch rock magazine (Muziekkant Oor) talking about synthesizers, 12-string acoustic guitars, shifting moods, splendid guitar soli, outstanding interplay and very captivating compositions, has Rush turned into a progrock band? Yes, they had and how convincing!
But in the same year I was also very pleased with Rick Wakeman his return to the fresh and dynamic Going For The One album so I witnessed them in Ahoy, Rotterdam (Wakeman with his huge array of keyboards on 3 floors and Chris Squire with his amazing triple-neck).
And now I am delighted about Pink Floyd with Animals, what a powerful and emotional album but back in the late Seventies I was very disappointed, it was too dark and raw for me in 1977!

National Health,
Hijos Del Agobio,
Rockpommel’s Land.
Il voted for Circus, cause no has done so, so far, and it is a good album that should receive more attention.

1977 was the swansong year for prog with a big collection of damn good records. Practically all the big names had a good release that year. My 1 2 3
1 Going for the one
2 Wind and wuthering
3 Songs from the Woods
The next year 1978 it started to go all wrong.

As much as I love "Animals" and "Songs From The Wood" - I voted for "Going For The One" as it was a good strong album after some quieter moments for "Yes".![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

Nearly went for Going for the One as I'm such a fan and I have happy memories of buying the album when first released, seeing them in the concert that year with Wakey back at the keys, but.....musically, I have to vote for Animals, which (IMHO) is PF's best work.
Another great album from that year was Bowie's Heroes, featuring of course Fripp and especially, Eno.
And then there was Ian Dury's New Boots and Panties!!

Animals gets my vote. It was one of the first (possibly the very first) album I saved up for and rushed out to buy as soon as it came out rather than waiting to hear it first.
A Farewell to Kings runs it a very close second

Wow, what a selection. May I suggest another one is missing -
HAWKWIND Quark Strangeness and Charm - not their absolute best but should still be in the reckoning
Anyway - I feel I ought to be voting for either Renaissance or Barclay James Harvest (were BJH really prog??) as they were big personal favourites at that time. Had I been asked this question 10 years ago I would have had no hesitation in voting for Seconds Out as it was one of my most played vinyl albums ever. In recent years though I have connected more and more with the musical and lyrical aggro of Animals.
At the end of the day, I don't feel I could vote for just one - there are too many good uns.

Yeah, Gone to Earth is an excellent album, at least for the fantastic opener "Hymn". Not the best BJH's album of the classic Polydor period though (1974-1978).
BTW, congratulations, ANDREW, for your recent and important upgrade!!![](smileys/smiley32.gif)
