I always wondered about this question.

Which is the first ever power metal album?

IMO it has to be QUEENSRYCHE'S EP (1983) !!!

Although they evolved afterwards, I find this to be an excellent pure power metal album

Am I the only one???

Note: I don't consider bands that were in the NWOBHM genre etc. that can be classified as proto-power , I mean power metal as it is considered nowadays (Helloween etc.)

I'd suggest Iron Maiden's debut. Somewhere around 1980 there is a transition between NWOBHM and "Modern" Power Metal ...

PANTERA: "Metal Magic" (1983)

RATT: "Ratt" (miniCD 1983)

SAVATAGE: "Sirens" (1983)

VIRGIN STEELE: "Virgin Steele" (1982)

AGENT STEEL: "The Unstoppable Force" (1982)

I disagree with Iron Maiden as power metal, maybe a transition as Mike said

ANDREW:

Battle hymns: epic metal

Pantera: Not much of power metal, kind of hard/glam rock in their early days

Ratt: NWOBHM

Sirens: very close to power metal, mostly heavy metal

Virgin Steele: same as above, more of epic/heavy metal

The unstoppable force: 1987 (the first time I caught you not well informed)

European: Helloween, Blind Guardian etc.

American: Heathen, Agent Steel, Hades etc.

American Power has a more thrashy approach...

Well, there is a definitive connection between Iron Maiden and Helloween ... I think that Iron Maiden are forerunners of Power Metal - the only problem is that a) they started in another genre (NWOBHM) and b) the label "Power Metal" simply hadn't been "invented" yet back then.

That would depend on your definition of "genre". NWOBHM is a good genre definition in my opinion, as all those bands share some key properties. I'd say that it is as much a genre as Canterbury, RIO or Bay Area Thrash.

In my opinion, NWOBHM is as much a genre as Classic Rock. It is associated with a certain sound and, more importantly, era that, for example, just like groups who copy The Beatles nowadays aren't called Classic Rock because they make music now, not in the 60/70's; so groups who do music in the style of Iron Maiden and early Judas Priest are now called Traditional/Heavy/Speed/whatever instead of NWOBHM since the "new wave" got old.

i have always considered NWOBHM as not a specific genre or sub-genre of heavy rock/metal but is more of a description of the players, musicians from Britain around the early 80's.

NWOBHM is a genre by that definition ... it marks a distinctive style, form or content. That's why I posted these definitions ...

Maybe we would get somewhere if you explained why NWOBHM or Classic Rock aren't genres in your opinion?

For the record Ratt was never a nwobhm band, they're not even british!!

whern I was a young kid (14 when Manowar's Battle Hymns was released), they were generally considered as being the fathers of Power Metal, as distinct from NWOBHM....
