Name bands that carry this hightly contagious disease.  one of the bands that I think that suffer from this dreaded disease is: Transatlantic - 6 epics in 2 albums. my first impresion was a happy one at first but it gets kind of tiresome by time. now you -------------

I got tired of epics after listening to Tales from a Topographic Ocean by Yes While the songs are all good, and I dont have too many problems with them, I just have to ask: Why 6 in one album?(if you get the 2 cd set) There were just too many slow moments that seemed to drag. I remember thinking to myself, "ok Yes, we realize you can do 20 minute songs already" with Close to the Edge, it seemed like the song just happened to last for twenty minutes, but Tales it seemed like every song was written with the intention of lasting a long time, not being a good song. but they still manage to have some amazing moments in the songs. ------------- Watch out where the huskies go,dont you eat that yellow snow |

I dont know about excessive, I like the long songs and get anoyed when bands release mainly 4-5 minute songs, unless these are absolute gems. ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

some bands know how to do epics that you can never get tired or at
least for a long time. Jethr Tull made some epics here and there but
they never looked like they where trying to impress or something like
it. They knew how and when to do them. -------------

| I must admit I've always had a soft spot for a 20 minute epic, but in reality most "epics" are just a number of separate songs strung together, so an epic is just one side of a normal album without the gaps in between. |

Eh? Floyd made 3 epics (4 if you count Dogs as an epic, although I don't) out of 14 albums.
A related disease is Excessive Length Disorder. nah. It's just a cool name to fit with the "disease".... or maybe it is . Disorder means lack of order so when they make a lot of these epics they kind of get out of hand or exagerated.-------------

You're right,they don't have many true "epics". The Fountain of Lamneth,2112,Cygnus X-1 Book 2. Anything else? The Necromancer,Cygnus X-1,Natural Science,By-Tor and The Snowdog,The Camera Eye,etc. are too short to be considered epics. ------------- |

I'm usually disappointed if there isn't a suite or an extended length composition on an album. Those italian progsters love to pretend they aren't writing epics by splitting them up into four or five pieces, and that always catches me out. |

Yes, for sure. After Fragile they seemed in capable of writing a Song under 10 minutes length. Same with VDGG after the least we can do. -------------

It's weird that you mentioned GY!BE, because now that I think about it, all of their songs are ridiculously long. It never really bothered me with them, because the songs just seem to work.
The shortest song they even have is 09/15/00 Part II (6:16), and if you count the two parts as one song then its like 23 minutes. So technically their shortest song is Moya, clocking in at an abrupt 10:51  ------------- Iron throated monsters are forcing the screams; Mind and machinery box-press our dreams |
