Phil Collins drummer for Genesis, singer for Genesis, successful solo artist. Also he has become one of the most hated celebrities in recent times. Now I want to know what you think, is Phil Collins part of the magic of classic Genesis or was he tarnish to not only that band but all of the music industry? (A little dramatic I know). My opinion is that the man was an excellent drummer, but also that the best two songs he ever wrote are just filler on genesis albums. So it’s kind of conflicting. Overall though, I think genesis benefit from his involvement more than they were inhibited.

Excellent drummer, not irreplaceable, Chester Thompson proved that, Gtreat Backing vocalist, decent main vocalist in his beginning (got weaker as his music) but terrible composer. Would have loved to see Manu Katche or Tony Fernandez with Genesis. Iván |

That hits the nail on the head. Irreplaceable? Probably not, but I liked his contribution to Genesis a great deal between 1971 and 1980, and see no reason why anyone would have done things better. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

| He was agood drummer with early Genesis , no doubt. and he even did a god job at replacing Gabriel on vocals until And Then ther were three. I liked some of his early stuff like Hello Imust be going and No Jacket required but his recent stuff makes my ears hurt. Have you heard the new one " Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away"? It just makes you want to spew your buscuits. |

He was great in the 70s then started to suck without mercy at the dawn of the new decade. Due to his high profile some people might feel more inclined to wanna throw stuff at him for selling out but really I can say the same for a great handful of 70s prog masters. The main differnece being they weren't as good at selling out. And, oh yes I'm biased, Genesis is my all-time favorite band. ------------- Prog is the new punk, becuase kids who shop at Hot Topic don't know Bill Bruford is God. |

Well put newbie. It wasn't as if the members of ELP, Yes and Kansas(to name but a few) weren't selling their soul to pop in the 80's as well. Heck., even King Crimson and Peter Hammill started sounding more poppish. Thank God for Marillion!! |
