alright well as i've said, i have absolutely no knowledge of progressive rock, but i'm trying to learn. Since I own few albums, i was wondering if you could just tell me what i'd like if I'm a fan of ____. so heres some stuff I own to offer recs by:
- early Yes ---> "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Close to the Edge"
- The Mars Volta
- Coheed and Cambria
- "Leftoverture" by Kansas

That sounds dynamic and varied so I recommend Rush (my favorite era is 77-84), early ELP, Jehtro Tull, early Gentle Giant, a world to discover!

You got to get Relayer by Yes!

1. Complete your Yes collection - at the very least, get Tales
from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going for the One, and for a live set
Yessongs. If you want to keep going, I liked Drama and the first
two albums as well, but didn't care for Tormato or much after Drama
(one exception here is Keys to Ascension I/II, definitely check them
out).
2. Rush is my favorite band. Everything from Fly By Night
(1975) through Moving Pictures (1981) is pure genius, start with 2112
and Moving Pictures and go from there. You might be buying a LOT
of CDs if you get hooked.
3. ELP - first album, Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy.
4. Though I'm personally not a fan, check out Genesis. Try
where I failed, "Selling England by the Pound" and "Lamb Lies Down on
Broadway". There's ample support here to answer any and all of
your Genesis queries.
5. There's still some more quality Kansas to be had.
6. To find out much, much more, I think there's a website, it's called progressive archives or something...
Seriously, this website is an absolute gold mine. Search the
various genres, listen to mp3s when you can, read the reviews.
You'll be broke in no time.
7. Try last.fm to get exposed to bands you've never heard of - another good source.
Last but not least, welcome!
P.S. If you like metal at all, check out the prog-metal section
on this site and various prog-metal recommendation threads in the forum!

hey Andrew, may i ask where in Italy you are from? i went there last April with my high school Latin class(it was my first time ever to Europe) and it was amazing. Rome, Venice, Pompeii ( i forget the exact town nearby where i stayed for that part of the trip) but especially Florence I loved.

Went to Italy for 10 days with my wife about 3 years ago.
Probably the best time of my life, the cities were just absolutely
fantastic, and as for Tuscany and the Chianti region...THAT is where I
want to be when I'm retired.
Sorry for the OT post.
