I'm just interested to see what people say. I don't have a favorite really, but lately I've been interested in some hand-drawn, fantasy-style stuff like the Ayreon album covers.

The packaging and art on Tool's cds I really like.Guitarist Adam Jones is in charge of art direction, and they work with painter Alex Grey alot.

As far as the traditional stuff, definitely Roger Dean.

Which reminds me,I am listening to Iron Maiden's debut and Derek Riggs did some excellent covers and paintings for them.Really appealed to me when I was a teenager.

Yes' Relayer cover is among my favorite. In fact, Roger Dean's work is often beautiful.

Oh I cannot forget to congratulate P.J. Crook. In these kind of threads nobody talks about him but he's the guy who made all the wonderful artwork for KC's last albums (The Power to Believe and all the lives you get from the fanclub). I really love his style. It's original. Most artist drawing progressive album art tend to imitate Roger Dean. Crook's art is really different.

You can't talk about prog album art without mention or Roger Dean.

As far as old albums, the cover of ITCOTCK is my favorite.  it really shows you just how crazy the music is right on the cover.  the guy looks like he is running in fear of the music inside the album.

Also, I must agree with theprogtologist about Tool's art.  Alex Grey is an amazing painter, and aside from using his art for the albums, they had giant banners of his paintings onstage during the Lateralus tour.

I don't know why, but apart from Dean's covers, I like PT's In Absentia and IQ's Darkmatter covers. I'm not into horror movies or believe in ghosts, monsters, etc , but I love these covers. Think they have a strong connection with the music inside.

Roger Dean's "Tales from Topographical Oceans" is still a landmark cover.  How I lament the passing of LP covers.  Part of the experience of listening to the music was having this big piece of art in my lap to set the mood.  And no one ever did that better than Dean.

How true, CD's just don't do it for me. My turntable still is an integral part of my stereo system. I love listening to my 70's progressive collection with the album in my hand.

As for favourite album cover? There were so many!

In November 1991, Rolling Stone magazine surveyed a panel of distinguished art directors, designers, photographers and editors for an admittedly highly subjective list of the 100 greatest album covers of all time

# 93 on their list?

You weren't missing anything.  It was Eric Carmen's "Tonight You're Mine".

This would have made a great Triumph album cover.
