In my opinion, Jordan Rudess is technically the best (like in Scenes and Octavarium), but i really like Kevin Moore's synth solos (the keyboard solo in Learning to Live blows my mind). But overall, Jordan has my vote. (The saloon-like piano solo in Dance of Eternity (Scenes From A Memory) is crazy)

Yep, ditto here. Moore's got far more subtleties and nuance in his playing. Next for me would be Sherinian, then Rudess.

Probably for DT Kevin is the best, but I voted for Mr. Rudess as I like his solo output (especially an Evening with Petrucci) very much. To me any of Rudess solo (including RMP) is uncomparably better than any by Sherinian or Moore.

Actually, I think that they're all technically similar in quality, with Rudess maybe obtaining the gold medal. But yes, I voted for Moore since his playing determined the particular essence of keyboards within the more global essence of DT sound.
Something like Bardens, who only stayed in the Camel line-up for 6 years, yet his input remained a crucial definition of the role of keyboards within the Camel overall frame. And... unlike Tony Kaye, whose presence in Yes' first years can only be labelled as a prelude to the emrgence of more creative and more technically skilled musicians (Wakeman, Moraz,...)

The feeling that Moore gives with his keyboard is one of the main reasons that Images and Words is my fav. album.
Plus his work on Chroma key and OSI are good too.

dude okay Rudess has always been the best keyboard player for dream theater i mean good lord he only uses one power kurzweil keyboard or kord i think that's why he uses now anyway and Sherinian and Moore had to use like mulitple keyboards. and plus rudess went to Juilian and his musicianship is so freakin AWESOME!!!! i mean Derek is good but way into the whole Rockstar thing and Moore he had it going great for him in the early 90s until he decided to quick and go make up Chroma Key which to me isn't all that great cause to me its just a bunch of sound effects

Yeah, I love Planet X.
His keyboards in King of the Universe, Moonbabies, and the live solo from Live From Oz are especially sick.

I liked when Derek played with Yngwie Malmsteen on the album Attack!! The two styles worked really well together. But Jordan Rudess is a much better player, just listen to albums such as Rythem of Time, Feeding the Wheel, or Dream Theater's Octavarium to hear his technical abilities. And for anyone who thinks that that is all he can do, Listen to An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess for acoustic piano rather than electronic keyboards.
Since Rudess joined Dream Theater, their work has been alot better.

You just have to hear his work with Planet X.... I wouldn't judge him on Attack!! either. Malmsteen gave him no room to show off.

After the entrance of Jordan Rudess, Dream Theater was never the same. With 'Octavarium' the things began to be a little better, but I prefer the old days, with Moore or Sherinian...

Well, Sherinian couldn't really broaden and his style
didn't fit really well. I don't like Rudess really much,
he is quite good technically, but I'm not fond with his
shallow compositions. I don't know how good Moore is
technicallly, but his compositions are quite good and
soulful, so my vote goes to Moore!

Rudess for me, I just love his style of play on all four albums he has done with DT, Sherinian never did anything that interested me with the band and Moore was really good at composing but his technical ability doesn't match Rudess.

Rudess is an excellent musician, both live and studio. He has an enormous style, far more notoriuos than any other member from the band. Besides, the band has a more mature and stylish sound since his appearance. His keyboards are crazy, refined and original.
With Sherinian occurs something strange. We only have one album with his talent(ACOS is out because it is no album and it was written long before his time), so there is not much to choose from. And to many it isn't the favourite DT album. BUT I think, that is why this album is so special, because Sherinian shares his musicianship only on this recording, and that is quite interesting. Maybe his style is not as notorious or cool as Rudess's, but the fact that this album is the only piece we can appreciate from his work in the band is what counts here.He even sang!
Moore was not my choice at first. But after a few more listens(as it always happens) he became not only my favourite keyboardman but my fav band member and one of the best musicians I know. Why? He has style, he writes excellent lyrics, he writes the songs, he even has his own songs in DT, something only Pettrucci also haves. His organ playing and obscure sounds and songs have won my heart(Space Dye Vest and Wait For Sleep...man!), in DT, OSI and i'm looking forward to Chroma Key. So my vote is for master Moore.

Well, here I was hoping to write something that wouldn't consist on
that much for banality, but, then again, it seems the thread itself
doesn't offer that much to vary on, as some refer to. Unlike what has
been said, I think Rudess' influence to Dream Theater's sound isn't as
decisive or spontaneously radical to its maturity, since, oh well, how
long had they been active before Rudess' arrival? In theory, 10 years,
was it? Coincidental or not, one would feel a band would have time to
evolve, enhanced from past experience through erroroneous comportments
(most stark, Falling Into Infinity). Nonetheless, Jordan came to bring
innovative keyboards and his highly acknowledgeable proficiency at both
technical superiority and abated, though great composition and soul;
however, considering the keyboards to synchronise their talent with
Dream Theater, as the thread asks for, I believe Moore had given the
group a more influential presence, in songwriting and ambiental tones
of instrumental essence (although, OSI and Chroma Key display much more
attention to mood), crafting the longed feel, vibrating his musical
intellect to general recognition.
