Most serious progressive bands are keyboard and classically influenced. The concern for musical quality is very high. Sometimes too high IMO. This is what made so much prog tedious. More focus was applied to the musicians needs than to that of the listeners. That being said, Pink Floyd were always about the listeners. They came from the British sixties underground where people actually sat and listened to the music. Floyds wild experimentation of sound and light, the sonic experiance, was their main focus-to thrill the audience.

I feel as far as progessive rock and Pink Floyd are concerned, prog is something Floyd later grew into. Atom Heart Mother is a cross over from psychedelic to a more progressive attude. Certainly, Darkside up to and including The Wall. Meddle and Obscured? not sure. All I know is the early Floyd is pure psychedelic rock with a touch of the avante garde.

Pink Floyd began playing psychedelic music, and then moved into darker territory while developing their distinct sound. They did not really stay with one style, they made experimental music the way they wanted to. And they didn't try to perfect one style, they just went with whatever they wanted to play.
This makes them different from any other band. It's almost just simply music because you can't really classify it. They were popular, and played around with "popular" music, but added the rock edge and distinct sound that only Floyd could produce.

So yes, they are very different from all the other bands.

to me ALL 'prog' bands are progressive in different ways and that includes PF.
PF have been extremely infuential to a lot of neo-prog, prog-related and post-rock bands IMO.

I don't think that PF is a blues band but Gilmour certainly is a blues-based guitar player, unlike most prog rock guitar players. This is one of the points that make Pink Floyd music different from other prog rock acts.

Pink Floyd is different then other prog bands because instead of focusing on the virtuosity of the indivisual players, its focuses on the songwriting and the emotional experience. And they do it better then anrone could dream of

Echoes in particular is an emotional roller coaster. the first time i heard it was really late at night before i went to sleep. I went from dreamy to relaxed to anxious to frightened (the middle scream "echoes" section is waaaaayyy out there especially at night) to excited and rocking out to dreamy again.......I cant even imaging the dreams i had that night.

Gilmour is def a blues guitar player but when Waters assumed control of the band (post DSOTM era)  he added his neo-classical flair to the band

It shows how amazing and unique they are to not only be called prog rock, but unique even in the realm of prog rock

What two good prog bands are the same, Or sound alike?? Every prog band has their own unique style and sound, In some cases, The bands were ALWAYS changing their style and sound - Yes and King Crimson for example.

Obviously PF are different from symphonic progressive bands, as they draw from different influences: blues, psychedelia, even straightforward pop music (in their later phase). As others have already said, individually speaking they are not as virtuosic as the members of other well-known bands, but they possess their own unmistakable style and atmosphere. No one could mistake them for any other band.
