Yeah, I agree.  It is a close call but Pirates was really the band coming into their own.

Epic and story songs are two different things. Karn Evil 9 and Tarkus are great epics, but they don't have a story (unless you really wanna go crazy into analyzing them). Lucky Man has a definite story, but is certainly nothing epic.

^ Ah but Pirates does.  It is also Epic so it gets my vote.

Tarkus "feels" the most epic to me.  Even though "Take a Pebble" is not an epic or a story, I really REALLY love that song.

Lucky Man for me. I think it has a pretty simple, yet effective, story in its lyrics and a epic sound to the music.... then a synth solo out of left field. One of the reasons I dig ELP so much. For me they could make any song sound epic.

Karn Evil 9, though I really don't like the computer voices at the end. I
understand why they did it, for the purpose and meaning of the song but it
could have had a much better and more powerful ending if they didn't do it.

In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

throw Mr. Emerson and Mr. Lake into that booty kicking catagorie and you'd have my full agreement.  Tarkus is as good as ELP got.... and maybe even as good as prog got.
