ive been liking david gilmours voice alot more lately.

you guys might not appreciate this, but my favorite vocalist of all time is eric burdon. i love his voice. i like cool, sort of gravelly sounding voices.

does anyone know of other vocalists like this that i might like?

I voted for Peter Hammill.

Him and Robert Wyatt are my two favorite voices in prog, great on both range and emotion.

David Gilmour, although it's close between him and Greg Lake (shouldn't he be in this poll?)
In all honesty, I think Freddie Mercury has the best voice, but there's no fun in clicking the other button, so...Gilmour it is!

Steve Hogarth has in my opinion a very ordinary voice that lacks any character. I wouldn't be able to tell it from a bunch of randomly selected voices.

Well, I agree that it isn't the most original voice, but IMO it's very distinctive and he sings quite well. Obviously, Fish does have more character.

My vote would go to Wyatt or Sinclair I think, two phenomenal voices.

Why no Greg Lake. His vocals on epitaph and in teh wake of Poseidon would have to be amongst the best ever.

Impossible to answer with a mere vote . Noone was as creative , variegated and emotive as Gabriel but he had some severe limitations and did put in some shockers such as Back In NYC. So my vote goes to Jon Anderson.

hahahha... anger is a wasted emotion, why be angry when you can be happy... just an emotion to express my displeasure at his omission.

sort of surprised that Jon Anderson has so many votes (assuming they are valid hahahah) with all the grief he gets for being 'emotionless' and his vocal range. Not that I agree of course.. just a commen criticism.

I voted Fish. There is just something in his voice that is very powerful to me. i know, I know, I see Gabriel influences and like Gabriel much more but somehow I think his voice fits so well with Marillion's music; especially psuedo-silk Kimono. That song gives me chills.

This is slightly off-topic, but after hearing his version of Firth Of Fifth on Hackett's Tokyo Tapes album, I've often thought that John Wetton could have been a good replacement for Gabriel in Genesis, had Collins not taken up the mantle.

I know there's a whole bass guitar argument in there, but I'm talking about his vocal qualities only.

Back on topic, my vote would have to go for Collins (circa 1976/77), Richard Sinclair, Eric Woolfson, or John Wetton.

Syd Barret for some reason. Don't know why, but his voice makes me smile.

For good vocalists though- David Gilmour and Steven Wilson.

Since you qualified by saying "in their prime", I chose Steve Walsh.  But my goodness, has anyone's voice ever deteriorated as much as his had?  I actually like some of Kansas' recent stuff, but it's certainly not because of Walsh's torn-up vocals.

Jon Anderson gets my vote. Good pitch and crystal clarity.

Greg Lake should have been on the list, as should Justin Hayward and Annie Haslam.

From that list, it has to be Gilmour, since Morse isn't out of his prime yet.

Voices in it´s prime?
Jon Anderson between Close to the Edge and Relayer...
Peter Gabriel between Tresspass and Selling England
Ian Anderson between Thick as a brick and Heavy Horses
Robert Plant between Led Zeppelin I and Physical Graffity
Ian Gillan between In Rock and Machine Head
Peter Hammill...´till this very day...WOW!

...haven´t heard much of Walsh

Though I'm not Wetton's biggest fan, I have to agree on his performance on The Tokyo Tapes. He  sings very well indeed, and he would not have been a bad choice to replace Gabriel. Collins was quite good in the '70s, before Genesis' output started to deteriorate.

As to Richard Sinclair... don't laugh, but I find his voice positively sexy. To my mind, he's one of the great unsung heroes (excuse the unintended pun) of prog rock.
