As Erik Neuteboom did with his "Spanish Prog" poll, here you can choose 3 or 5 albums that you like.

  1. Magma - Kobaia
  2. Ange - Au-Delà Du Délire
  3. Pulsar - The Strands Of The Future
  4. Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony
  5. Arachnoid - Arachnoid

I do not know Shylock and Dun, and I do not like Heldon and Jean-Michel Jarre.

All others in this list are among my favourites.

As long as I can vote only for one - I voted for Asia Minor, as it is not likely that majority would share my enthusiasm about this particular band.

you should try to find a copy of Ose - Adonia, it
sounds like Cluster meets Fripp and to me is the
best recording Richard Pinhas participated in
outside of Lard Free, which it compares with. For all
you Lard Heads!

and Travelling and Triode still dont make your
list???? whats up!

Dun - Eros is one of the best albums released
anywhere in the world from the 1980's.

At the moment TAAL is my absolutely favourite band - the best one, and, frankly I cannot see any competitors for my Number One for the time being.

But here, I think, we are talking about much earlier stuff - 70's or so prog from France?!

  • Magma - Kontarkohsz
  • Weidorje - Weidorje
  • Dun - Eros

I could just list Magma's entire 70s output, but there was a lot of other great music in France at the time.

Sandrose their eponymous album: wonderful female vocals, lush Mellotron waves and excellent guitar work! Other good albums are Don Giovanni by Versailles and Still Dream by Edhels.

New great French progrock bands are Maldoror and Nemo, check them out!

Here's my French Prog Top 5.-

  • Pulsar - Halloween
  • Magma - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh
  • Shylock - Ile de Fevre
  • Mona Lisa - Avant Qu'il Ne Soit Trop Tard
  • Asia Minor - Between Flesh and Divine
  • Of course, top of this top had to be filled by... a PULSAR ALBUM!!!

PULSAR IS THE BEST FRENCH PROG BAND EVER... in my humble opinion, of course

I have to check out most of those bands, but I love Magma, Dun, Taal and Jean-Luc Ponty. Taal isn't on the list, so I will vote for MDK, and Eros is a close runner up.

    Memoriance, Etron Fou, Eskaton, Zao

    What do you think?

    And what about SANDROSE?

BTW- Memoriance is not listed on PA. It is a very obscure band and I have not heard much about it and heard only two (one and a half) song by them very long ago. They released two albums (symphonic style):

    Et Apres 1976,     L'Ecume des Jours 1979

I am not in a position to suggest to add them. Does anyone (HMM...DallasBryan, Erik, ANDREW...HMM) know them?

Eskaton - 4 Visions is very good, comparable with Dun - Eros with french vocals, as I remember. I heard one of the Memoriance albums but it was at least 12-15 years ago, remember it as top notch but I cant remember the title, think it was one of the above you listed. Zao is a little more fusion with Zeuhl tendancies. Kawana and Sherika are the best, though not up to par with Dun's, Eskaton's or maybe keyboardist Patrick Gauthier's Bebe Guerilla.

Alain Markusfeld/Le son tombé du ciel (1971)
    is an unknown gem.

There's a 10mn piece which is an absolute spacerock masterpiece. Somewhat closed to PF and Agitation free!!

Here's what GEPR says about Alain Marksufeld:

    "Markusfeld, Alain [France]
Le Monde En Etages (70), Le Son Tombe Du Ciel (71), Le Desert Noir (77), Platock (78), Contemporus (79), Live (80)

French guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, very unique. His albums blend multi- layered acoustic guitars with fiery leads, piano, ethereal female voices, throbbing bass and percussion. His guitar style could be described as early Larry Coryell (acoustic) meets Randy California (electric) with a strong middle-eastern influence. Le Desert Noir is a heavier guitar album which features drums on almost every track, overall very hendrix influenced. With Platock, there is more maturity in his sound, combining delicate acoustic guitars and more piano to his trademark sound, with less reliance on drums. Contemporus attempts to continue in the same vein, but fails to reach the same energy level, except possibly on the sidelong "Contemporus" suite. Start with Platock, which most will agree is his best. First two releases are very rare. "

Nobody here voted for MAGMA's "Kobaia"; in my opinion it's not a bad album, it contains excellent jazz-rock songs inspired to SOFT MACHINE. From the next album "1001° Centigrades" the famous MAGMA style took shape; the music is more complex and menacing, rich of bizarre polyrhythmics, obsessive and ominous, especially in the emphatic vocalizations.

    No, i don't know them.

I have the two albums on tapes (recorded from vinyl) and ripped them on CD, (because they've never been re-released on CD)
IMHO "Et après" is very good, "L'écume des jours" is weaker.
I think they should be in PA but unfortunately, i've no biography information except the line-up and the covers jpeg !

If it's enough to include them, let me know i'll send you line-ups, jpegs and a mp3 file.

I still say Lard Free is the best French band I've heard, but am interested in hearing more.

I think, gents, you are missing the point. I believe that we are talking here about 70's French prog, as otherwise it would be a MUST to include in the list following great French prog bands:

    Taal

    4/3 de trio

    Halloween

    Aside Beside

    XII Alfonso

    Nil

    Thork

    Silver Lining

    Cafeine

    Xang

I believe there will be a lot of people to discuss above bands, but this would be another topic/poll all together.

The main group that came to mind when I saw this "French Prog" thread (MALICORNE) isn't even listed.  So the list seems rather incomplete...

It is not intended to be complete. The point is to state your preference (no pun intended) and if you feel something is missing, then say what it is and tell us something about them and just a simple comment we alreasy know...

Now, would you care to elaborate on your addition to this open discussion?

    Here's a mention to dis-disappoint you

    XII ALFONSO

The Lost Frontier , Odyssees, Claude Monet - Volume 1, This Is, Claude Monet - Volume Deux, 1889-1904

I read you review of Claude Monet - Volume 1 but can you tell me and for those not familiar with them, a little more about this band and their albums, please?

I think, gents, you are missing the point. I believe that we are talking here about 70's French prog, as otherwise it would be a MUST to include in the list following great French prog bands:

    Taal

    4/3 de trio

    Halloween

    Aside Beside

    XII Alfonso

    Nil

    Thork

    Silver Lining

    Cafeine

    Xang

I believe there will be a lot of people to discuss above bands, but this would be another topic/poll all together.

    Exactly!!!

This poll concerns French prog bands from the '70s. But recommendations about "new" French prog are well accepted.

    Well said!!!

This poll is not incomplete (IMO); if someone knows other bands that aren't in this poll, they should choose "others" and then explain...

If you think MALICORNE should be in the list, you should pick up the option "Others" and explain why.

It's always a pleasure to pass on some info about a band to a fellow prog-head. As I mentioned in my review of Monet Vol I, I discovered XII Alfonso thanks to some correspondance I had with session guitarist Ian Bairnson. He pointed me towards a partial mp3 of a track he played on, and I liked what I heard. The album wasn't easy to get hold of, but I managed to track one down. It took a few listens to get into it, but after a while I came to enjoy it a lot.

I went after the band's earlier material, and discovered that both The Lost Frontier and Odyssees were - how shall I put this - a bit less influenced by French folk/traditional music than the Monet disc. No surprise, as the Monet disc was the first of a trilogy of concept albums based on Monet's life and times, so it makes sense that the music will reflect that turn of the century feel.

The earlier albums are also conceptual in their outlook. The Lost Frontier is influenced by medieval Northumbria and Hadrian's Wall in northern England, while Odyssees has a space travel theme.

Unfortunately, the live album "This Is...." isn't particularly strong, but I tend not to hold weak live efforts against bands.

The new Monet disc, Vol 2 1889-1904, carries on where Vol 1 left off, and if anything has drifted more towards the folk/trad influences.

XII Alfonso's music is certainly hard to pin down. They are certainly NOT heavy at all, nor would I call them "folk-prog". You might say that their music is theatrical at times - more suited to stage production. However, you'll hear a very wide range of styles and influences throughout their albums.

If your taste veers more towards melodic, softer prog rather than the prog metal side of things, XII Alfonso are well worth a listen.

Thanks Norm for that elaborate explanation .

Andrew and Micky, I suspect the sudden rise in votes is due to that @#$%@ ginnyman that probably had the need to bash the thread.

As to Arachnoid, I heard a long time ago, but I have fond memories of it and I hope to reunite with this album someday soon

    French Prog/

Four main currents (Gong which I consider french is not relly representative of French prog)

Magma school: Zeuhl and clearly the greatest French group. Almost the only group that created a genre by itself

Ange: A mix of symphonic and theatrical rock: classical at first (their first two were heavily leaning on genesis-type of symphonic rock) , original afterwards (from Au Delà Du Délire onwards , they used a very prominent vocal role and Descamp became the central figure even more than Gabriel was in genesis) and influential (prime achievment: they are mostly responsible for having many French groups trying it in the late 70's even though the mood for such music was on the fade out>> Shylock, Carpe Diem, Mona Lisa, Asia Minoer etc...)  , but clearly not on the same level of greatness than Magma

Lard Free, Heldon, Pinhas: the French side of Krautrock , these guys went far into their trip, and artistcally , they deserve to be the equal to Magma>>> My fave

Malicorne and other folk prog groups such as Ripaille or Asgard and Tangerine. This is never really groundbreaking stuff , but always progresses along by updating trad stuff

XII Alphonse, Fugu, Taal and Drama

Hi all, great poll here with nice references... Magma, Pulsar, Etron fou, Zao, Clearlight of course

other main early bands which were on the road in the 70ees :
    • "Crium delirium" they didn't want to be recorded but lately in the 90 they published live tapes in CD.
    • "Cheval fou" was a powerful trio very creative.
    • "Catherine Ribeiro et Alpes" a band and a great singer. There Patrice Moulet played his own instruments as percuphone and else.
    • "Potemkine" rather jazz-rock very original music.
    • Albert Marcoeur still live and well.

    Genre: Progressive
Sub genre(s): Psyche/space prog with some singing which may remind of Ange, but in less theatral.
The guitar is of course excellent, and can be hendrix-like at times.

    >>>
    Here's what says gepr.net:

    Markusfeld, Alain [France]

Le Monde En Etages (70), Le Son Tombe Du Ciel (71), Le Desert Noir (77), Platock (78), Contemporus (79), Live (80)

French guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, very unique. His albums blend multi-layered acoustic guitars with fiery leads, piano, ethereal female voices, throbbing bass and percussion.
