Most people think they are symphonic black metal band but if you hear them with attention you'll see it has tempo changes and it's a little diverse. Ok, the vocals are black metal style but so what?

SO WHAT?

"A little diverse" may not be enough to qualify as prog. The prog metal team voted on Cradle of Filth a couple of months ago - you can see the results here:

Pure black metal, nothing prog in their music!!!

[QUOTE=ANDREW]Pure black metalQUOTE]

Many black metal fans would skin you alive for this. They'd sooner say Neal Morse is black metal than Cradle of Filth.

Very good band, though, quite theatrical and the songs are really well-structured. Does that make them prog metal? I'm not going in there.

I can maybe see some elements- longer songs, interesting music passages, but I have to say no also.

The problem is that most black metal bands use symphonic elements to "embellish" that sound. Cradle of Filth do that quite efficiently, but I miss any serious artistic ambition in their compositions. I really enjoy listening to them once in a while though.

I think that's a good summation. Their music is often highly progressive
in its execution, but in its conception is decidedly lowbrow - aimed very
much at teenagers. With a different vocal style, more restrained lyrics and
very different cover artwork, they would probably qualify as prog metal.

I saw them live in Milan a few years ago at the "Gods Of Metal", and trust me they are a black metal band with very very small prog elements!!!

I have heard some albums from them and I was surprised by the exciting keyboard work and the shifting moods so they have progressive elements. But the emphasis is on heavy guitar riffs, furious drumming and screamy vocals, that's why I can't stand listening to them for longer than a few minutes. But perverted progheads should check out this band because of the visuals ..  ...!

But this raises an interesting question: Should such a band which is "technically" progressive but has - in the eyes of us prog critics - not the necessary artistic ambition be accepted in the archives and then recieve bad reviews ... or should it just not be accepted?

Okay, this is exactly why I suggested a couple of weeks ago that we create a 'sticky' topic in one of the main forums and mention what bands are currently rejected per (sub)genre...

eek! Cradle of Filth... filthy indeed... Ive seen a couple cradle of filth DVDs... a few of my friends are really, really into CoF... but I dont like em. No. They are damn boring, especially after you are forced to listen to nothing but CoF and other... black metal - y stuff... Dimmu Borgir... Old Mans Child, ahg! Damn them all. After watching Cradle of Filth perform on the DVDs, and listening to their ridiculous music, when you watch the documentary parts of the DVD it really makes you laugh, they just mess around like a bunch of morons. Blowing things up, putting explosions in a metal pot and jamming a soccer ball in the lid... throwing firecrackers at eachother... getting drunk and hanging out with really, really, brutally ugly women...

Cradle of Filth... I think I liked one song I heard by em... only the intro though, the rest was pretty boring. Soo.. In conclusion: they is lames.

As for progginess... I dunno... I dont really see it... too much stupid STUPID screaming. AUHG, its bad enough I have to listen to it in the damn songs but my friend always imitates his favourite Danny Filth screaming at school. the whole theme is stupid, and if you like cradle of filth style, gory stupidity, then watch 'cradle of fear'... i dont even know what its supposed to be... its like a cradle of filth movie... just gore and nudity and booze and RIDICULOUS effects (in one scene a car veers into traffic, and its basically footage of a street with traffic, and an image of the car moving around on the screen away from the camera... I laughed for like ten minutes) ... ah... where was I ...

You get the point...

Black Metal doesn't necessary have to be a bad thing... ever listened to the likes of Opeth, Borknagar, Vintersorg, Arcturus etc..? these are all black/death metal bands that make very intelligent music! Check them out, they are all included on ProgArchives

I simply don't understand why you say their music is ridiculous and boring. And about the screaming.............well, what can you expect about a black metal band?. I don't get it.

Why cradle of filth's music is too ridiculous and boring? Its just too over the top for me. They take their whole ... strange theme and just ... I dont know, it becomes sort of some twisted gimmick in my eyes at least. I dont see how anyone can take them seriously at all. Maybe its because ive seen their 'shlockumentary' (sp?) (what the HELL is that? SHLOCKumentary?). Supposedly they all drink some absinthe and go piss about in the woods for a while. The point is that they have this absurd, dark, gory theme that they use in all of their music but I find it, like I said before, too over the top, they took it way to far, and then when you see how completely unseriously they act in real life... well... I dont want to keep repeating myself but I guess I have too. They seem like one big, lame gimmick.

That and I just dont like em because I think their music is a bit repetitive. I cant really accurately judge because its been a little while since Ive had to hear any, but from what I remember, yes, it gets boring fast and the grownling and such just get on my nerves... especially since I have to hear my friend drone on about how talented of a vocalist Danny (Dani?) Filth is...

I guess they just dont suit my taste in music.

oh and I forgot about the music part... thingy, well like I said I dont remember it too well, but from what I recall there was a lot of annoying bass drumming... forget what its called... double kick, w/e... also the synthy organ bits I remember to be too... I dont know ...

I'm not very familiar with their music, nor do I want to be, but if I remember correctly, their possible addition has been suggested many times and they have been rejected.
