Which one is your favorite?

Mine would have to be:

1. Genesis - Cinema Show - The best of all time

2. Yes -  Close to the Edge - Not the church organ one, the one around 14:55, sortof jazz organish...

3. Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness - Around the 9th minute... WOW

4. ELP - From the Beginning - I'm not a big fan of the technical and wild solos of Emerson, I find them a bit too insane... On the other hand some of his melodic solos like From the Beginning are far more influential and alot cuter too....

5. Yes - Siberian Khatru - It's really short and a bit unsatisfying for that reason but It's a GREAT solo, around the 3:05 of the song. I see it as a hugely influential solo.... I think the solo from Stream of Consciousness resembles it in many ways....

Your favs are great, mine depend of my feelings and hence varies from times to times. I am presently enjoying EL&P version for Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' and I also cannot forget the majestic intro of Genesis's 'Firth of Fifth' and the soft and sad piano suite of VdGG's 'House of no doors'.

My recent purchases:

  1. The piano solo in Genesis' Firth Of Fifth
  2. The piano solo in ELP's Take A Pebble
  3. From The Undertow, the opening track from Tony Banks' A Curious Feeling (completely synth)
  4. The piano intro from Kayak's Niniane, The Lady Of The Lake (from Merlin); cheating here: also the keyboard solo at the end (well, almost the end) of the song
  5. Very simple, but I love it: the mellotron solo in Cliffhanger's epic Ragnarok (from their magnificent album Not To Be Or Not To Be); followed by some synth; very emotional stuff!

Three piano solos out of 5? I think I have to change my ID to "Pianotron III"

I just love it when a keyboarder goes really mad , and no-one does that better than Dave Stewart

Guys please...

all respect for your choices, but it seems you all have forgotten one of the very best.

listen to Rick van der Linden on the original Trace album - track one after ca. 2 minutes the most awesome solo kicks in. maybe not for technical skills but this is pure ENERGY!
to me one of the (if not THE) most wicked and energized hammond organ solo ever recorded on to a studio album.

Especially since Rick went from this earth recently, i encourage you to pull this album out once again and play it LOUD. may Rick v. d. Linden be blessed in eternity. What a gift of inspiration he left behind...

greetings,
barbarossa

The way the keyboards leap out at you in the keys solo of the song Closet Chronicles by Kansas has always been my favorite !  second is the solo in the Yes song Close to the edge.  Tony Banks does many short solos on The Lamb that are fantastic not to forget Firth of Fifth that is brilliant stuff

It all depends on what you are looking for and what mood you are in, sometimes I like keys to create an ambiance and paint a nice background, other times I like the keys to rise up to the aggression and take control

A few that immediately come to mind:

Banks - Firth Of Fifth (how original of me)

Banks - Riding The Scree from The Lamb

Wakeman - organ solo on Awaken

Joe Zawinul - A Remark You Made on Weather Report's Heavy Weather album.

Most recently: Peter Bardens - La Princesse Perdue, from the live version of Snow Goose on Camel's A Live Record.

It so difficult to decide on ones fav keyboard solo.

Emerson - Aquatarkus on WELCOME BACK - need quad speakers (and loads more)

Wakeman - Judas and the whole of Six Wives (have you spotted Richard Nixon on sleeve yet?)

Banks - Firth and Ripples

Yes - Finally someone mentioned 'Awaken' and parts of 'Close to the edge'

I love the whole keyboard theme to House of the Holy - Zep

Let's get the obvious out of the way...

Tony Banks; The Cinema Show, Entangled, Robbery Assault and Battery, In The Cage

Rick Wakeman; Awaken (church organ climax is probably my fave prog moment ever), Revealing Science Of God, Merlin The Magician

Keith Emerson; Trilogy, Aquatarkus (live version), Karn Evil 9 1st and 3rd Impression, Rondo

Jon Lord; Fireball, Burn, Highway Star, Child In Time

Less obvious ones...

Dave Sinclair; Winter Wine, Nine Feet Underground,The Dog The Dog He's At It Again, Dabsong Concerto

Eddie Jobson; Metamorphosis

Chick Corea; Duel of The Jester and the Tyrant

Joe Zawinul; Cannon Ball, Black Market

Pete Bardens; Earth Rise, White Rider, First Light, Echoes, Lunar Sea, Rhayader

Mike Ratledge; Song For Insane Times (Kevin Ayers), No Good Trying (Syd Barrett), Out Bloody Rageous, Moon In June

Ken Hensley; Gypsy (live '73 version), Midnight, Paradise/The Spell

Vincent Crane; Gershatzer, V.U.G. (two of the very best Hammond showcases ever!)

Mark Stanway (Magnum); Sacred Hour, Reborn, Just Like An Arrow

Dave Stewart; Little Fugue In G, The Yes No Interlude

Dave Greenslade; Bedside Manners Are Extra, Pilgrim's Progress, Drum Folk, Spirit Of The Dance, Valentyne Suite (Colosseum)

Graham Field/ Mark Ashton (Rare Bird); Iceberg, God Of War

I will add to that Jon Lord's Live versions of Highway Star, Child in Time and Space Truckin' from the album "Made In Japan" great musician ship almost up there with Keith Emerson

I think Tony Banks had the best solos in the context of what the rest of the band was playing, particularly when Steve Hackett was providing his incredible atmosphere.  Damn, those two sounded so good together, it's a shame they only worked together for a short period of time.  For example, the keyboard part in Cinema Show by itself isn't particularly great or impressive, but what made it sound so good was the bass, the drums, and the guitar.  I do think Genesis had the best keyboard parts, up until the point Hackett left, then it unfortunately changed for the worse.

Wakeman and Emerson were more flashy, and technically more proficient.  On their own, I think they had better keyboard solos.  Wakeman shines in Awaken, Close to the Edge, and Siberian Khatru.  Emerson destroys in Tarkus, Karn Evil 9, and Toccata, but I love his piano work in Take a Pebble best for some reason.

I dunno if anyone mentioned it... (dont think they did) but the one in 'the raven' part of 'the colony of slippermen' on disc 2 LLDOB... i love it.  also firth of fifth... in the cage.... etc.

that short little one in Siberian Khatru that sounds like... a harpsicord setting i think? right? well anyway, i keep listening to it over and over, its so great! So short though, it saddens me... that whole part kinda reminds me of... pirates.. and oceanic voyages. Dunno why. Kinda wierd. Some other songs do that to me and I cant stop listening to them over and over and over. I guess its like when I first listened to 'lookin out my back door' by CCR... oh man, I mustve listened to the song 30 times over in one night ... its so happy, makes me wish I lived on a farm and I spent every single day just sitting on the porch, drinking pepsi and eating sandwiches with barbecue chips. mmm mm... BBQ ...

err...

anyways.. ill just make a list of the songs I was supposed to mention.. hee hee

  • Colony of Slippermen
  • In the Cage
  • Firth of Fifth
  • Cinema Show (I never quite liked this solo as much as the others, I know its good, but theres something about it. The other solos, ill be listening to music while playing a game or something ,and the solo will punch me right in the kidney and say 'LISTEN NOW, FOOL'... but this one just doesnt do it! it makes me kinda sad because I know I should love it and it makes me think theres something wrong with my stupid, stupid head.
  • Siberian Khatru
  • Roundabout (theres that awesome organ-y-ness after the really quiet part... and its all like... wow!... I was listening to the live version on my CD player one time at school and i let my friend listen to it... and he DIDNT like it. I shoulda messed up his face real good.
  • something not by genesis or yes
  • something not by genesis or yes
  • something not by genesis or yes
  • ^ my memory is losing its edge after all of the stupid things I sputter out of my filthy mouth hole all day long.

WwwweeeEEEeeoooOOooOoOOoooOoooz.z..
