First of all, Hello to all prog fans, my name's Diego and I'm a 19 years old prog-metal fan. I also dig some traditional prog from the 70's, but lately prog-metal is my addiction.

I like Queensryche and Fates Warning a lot, they're my favorite bands.

I'm looking for prog-metal bands, or even prog bands, with middle-eastern touches, like male/female chanting vocals, sitars and flutes... to give everyone a pointer, let me use QR's Desert Dance from Tribe, and FW's River Wide Ocean Deep from FWX as examples, and in the pop side Sting's Desert Rose from Brand New Day.

Well, I think I made a clear idea of what I'm looking for. If anyone knows of bands, specially progressive metal bands that use middle-eastern influences in their songs please let me know.

Thanks a lot in advance,

The Drifter

Hail fellow prog meteller, if you are looking for a progressive metal band with middle eastern influences check out Shadow Gallery's 'Society of the Mind' from the Legacy album, there is a cool keyboard solo that has an eastern feel.

Also go for Ayreon's Isis and Osiris, that has a heavy middle eastern feel to it. The Eye of Ra is another good one to.

The 'Ryche rule

Though I'm not one for prog metal... if you fancy some plain prog with plenty of middle eastern overtones you can't beat Ozric Tentacles!

Also check out High Moon by Star One.

Actually I'd like to start a prog-metal band with middle-eastern influences...besides Sting's Desert Rose... add in a little Lorenna McKennitt's Mummers Dance or Marco Polo.....

What about Page and Plant's No Quarter - incredible version of Kashmir with Egyptian string orchestra - also spotted the DVD of the Unplugged Page & Plant with this on board, in a local shop - I'm told Jimmy Page has created an incredible surround sound for the disc?

And going back to the mid 60's, when perhaps there was the earliest interest in including a middle eastern feel to rock, check out The Great Society's original version of White Rabbit - specifically the live version (Grace Slick sounds so much better here than on any of the Jefferson Airplane versions).

David Fuze Fiuczinsky  solo albums have some - he kindly did me a radio programme ID called 'eastern exotic groove jams', which you'll hear about 8.30pm tomorrow night on my show. And Steve Vai, has done a few things: e.g. Race With The Devil On A Turkish  Highway with Al Dimeola, or 3 tracks on Surinder Sandhu's 2003 album Suringer Orchestra
