These are in mine and others opinion very good albums by two great
bands namely prog giants Yes! and Genesis! These two albums were
transitional periods for both bands. They both came out in 1980 and
both are fresh sounding albums which gave referance to what came before
and gave a nod on what was to come. So i was wondering what you thought
of these two great albums?

I chose Duke, one of my favourite Genesis albums. Drama is really good but not even close to Duke, sorry mates

I LOVE Duke, excellent album, but it's got a few uninteresting tracks whereas Drama just comes out like one massive Tour de Force and from start to finish has me completely captivated, stunning, with my favourites being 'Machine Messiah', 'Tempus Fugit' and oddly enough, 'Into the Lens' ------------- My computer's broke |

Duke for me... such a splendid album... immaculately produced, stellar songwriting, and Genesis' final masterpiece. Abacab had too much filler (but what an incredible title track), Genesis was too simplistic (albeit catchy), and Invisible Touch was too uneven (but still half great). I am definitely not one of those people who think Genesis ended with Hackett's departure, and I own all of their albums (aside from Calling All Stations), but in my opinion Duke is in many respects the last hurrah for the band. Never again would they release such a complete album statement and in my opinion, it even tops a few of their earlier albums (heresy, I know, but it's my opinion). |

These are two such examples of albums by artists who at the time were in their death throes. People subconsciously like to believe these albums were/are great because they just can't accept the fact that their favourite bands have in reality "thrown in the towel". The truth ladies and gentlemen is that these albums suck.

I think Drama is much better. The songwriting is much closer to the older Yes, rather than the new Genesis line-up's writing resembling nothing of their past. ------------- Strangers passing in the street by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me. Both are decent albums, but neither are Yes or Genesis at the top of their game. I chose Duke. Besides "Misunderstanding" and "Turn it On Again", it still has all the trademark classic Genesis schtick, tho you can kind of hear in hindsight they were ready to move on to other things (i.e. top 40 radio), its not as inspired as some of their earlier stuff. "Drama" has some killer music on it but Trevor Horn comes off like a poor-mans Jon Anderson, and the band was having major personnel and artistic issues at the time, so Id rate it just average. |

I don't like Drama very much. One of my least favourite Yes-albums. Duke is a very good Genesis record, though. Lots of classic tracks and innvative and energetic playing, and very emotional. |

Ooo, this is one of those tricky polls! I like Genesis much better than Yes, but as to those two albums, I choose Drama. That hits somewhat of a high period for Yes, and lower period for Genesis.

Tough choice but I think both are still correct at best If I have to choose, Ill go with Drama (no stinkers such as Misunderstanding and Turn It Off Again)
Your two polls taking parallels between Yes and Genesis relatively cool
Both made albums that were greatly deceiving back then for purists, but with what lays ahead in the 80's What was regarded as high treason for me (I felt this much stronger for Genesis than Yes - but I was never that much of a Yesman
In all cases: Duke, Drama, Tormato and ATTWT should not exceed 3 stars IMHO, max 3,5 stars ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Oups ! I think it's the first time I vote for Yes in a "Genesis vs Yes" poll ! I really like Drama, no weak song, great album IMHO. I like Duke too, but 'Misunderstanding', 'Alone tonight' & 'Please don't ask' are just below average

hmmmmm..... let me be forward and play with the order of the points in your post..... the band was having major personnel and artistic issues at the time and "Drama" has some killer music on it. Best point for Drama and reason enough to vote Drama over Duke hahaha..... to pull THAT music out of that kind of group crisis.... another clue, if needed for why Yes was head and shoulders above most prog groups. as far as Horn being a 'poor-mans Jon Anderson' have you actually listened to the vocals.... what you are hearing are mainly the trademark Yes harmonies of Squire, Howe, and Horn. No problem here, Duke is a bad hybrid, a forced mixture between bland POP and boring POP. Drama is a great album, no Jon Anderson or Rick Wakeman, but a very good album with incredible solid tracks (Except Into the Lens). BTW: For that guy that calls Trevor Horn a poor's man Jon Anderson I would say that I'd go blindly with Trevor Horn's voice over Jon Anderson's any day. Drama all the way. Iván -------------
