A bit impromptu and nieve, I know, but here it is:

There need to be more movies like "Spinal Tap" and "School of Rock". I have a great idea: the story of a band which begins as a rock band with a (stereotypically) unintelligent but loyal and good-natured drummer, a geeky Geddy Lee-loving bassist, a Rick Wakeman/Elton John-type keyboardist, and a heavy metal egotist guitar player (along the lines of Metallica).

The band creates an unlikely hit album (along the lines of DSOTM) after some gigging and is instantly famous. But the extreme creative differences of the band drive it apart, with the keyboardist and the bassist creating a prog band along the lines of Yes (it writes its own in-jokes!) and the guitarist and drummer creating a Metallica-type band.

Yes and Metallica make guest appearances, taking the two bands under their experienced wings. Bill Bruford becomes the drummer for the prog band, making an ELP-like trilogy. The metal band adds a generic "zombie" bassist who knows no complex chords. Yes and Metallica "train" the two bands for the big sterotypical "battle of the bands" finale, but midway thru they realize they are not good enough without the other counterpart band, but they refuse to team up. Metallica and Yes get into fights, with Anderson being all peaceful, then kicking the tar out of Metallica. Suddenly, as the fighting reaches a hilarious climax, Dream Theater enters and shows that you CAN have metal and prog work together. Big "aaawww" and a few hugs. Then Metallica and Yes work together and the prog and metal bands link back up. Then a big corny ending with Metallica and Yes both playing together onstage for the big finale.

Insert your own creative in-jokes and references. It practically writes itself!

Yes and Metallica? Simply remake the odd couple with James Hetfield and Jon Anderson as Oscar and Felix.

Maybe,  I think Michael Jackson and Ozzie might make a better duo.

I think that the band who shows that prog and metal can go together should at least be decent though

I'd rather see teams from all genre remake The Cannonball Run... Maybe Keiko from Arsnova can play the Jackie Chan part...

I suggest you take a look at the British comedy movie Still crazy, (Billy Connolly , Bill Nighe, some of the Auf Weidersen Pet cast), about a reformed 70's glam rock/prog rock band touring Holland in the late 90's . And Almost famous has some moments, and  you can guess who is playing our beloved Three Fates

I like your thinking, 3F - how about Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman in the Sammy Davis Jr & Dean Martin roles?

Now that Rick has gone comedian.. and Keith will always be the straight  guy... that could work...  And from what I saw of Marillion a couple of weeks ago... Steve Hogarth could do the Burt Reynolds part... and his guitarist Steve Rothery could do the Dom Deluise part...

In holland we have "Idols, The Rivals" That's already more than I can stomach, please don't lower the status of prog to that level. although from a humourous view point, might be worth considering,   NOT

You're probably thinking about Mr Tinkertrain meets Ben.
