Hey, I'm from the future, and after reading the regulations for this forum, I see that there is nothing to prohibit  time travelers such as myself from posting here, so here goes.

What is progarchives.com like in the year 2012 you may be asking ? Well, thanks to innovative people such as Tony R, the boundaries of prog rock increased tremendously.

So what are the most popular "prog" bands of 2012 you may be asking ? Well, I prefer the "kinda related to bands related to proto-quasi-pseudo-prog related bands" genre- such giants as Britney Spears and N-Sync, although some would argue that the Backstreet Boys belong in the "Not quite prog, but have had sex with groupies who once had sex with a member of Genesis, Yes, or ELP" genre. I find the BB's to be quite the prog band, yes sir.

I don't care for the "Ugly cabbage patch doll looking drummers who were in a prog band" genre, but have been known to enjoy some "they can play this here geetar" genre which includes such prog greats as Journey, Boston, and of course- REO Speedwagon.

So prog music has expanded in the year 2012 thanx to progarchives increasingly liberal definition of prog. In my time, all music is prog and prog is all music. As prog great Barry Manilow once said, "I write the songs, I write the songs"

So why am I here ? The ripples in the time space continuum told me that this was close to the moment when prog (as people in my time know it) started down that slippery slope. Yes it was the inclusion of prog greats http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=2023 - "Triumph" and http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=10705 - "George Michaels"  which did it, folks.

Well, I gotta get back before my flux capacitor loses its power. Prog on.

Top 10 Prog Albums on progarchives.com 2012:

  1. Britney Spears- Oops I did it again
  2. Bananarama- Wow
  3. Michael Jackson- Bad
  4. Jimmy Swaggert's Greatest Hits
  5. New Kids on the Block- The right stuff
  6. Eminem- Slim Shady
  7. Madonna- Like a Virgin
  8. Wham !
  9. Milli Vanilli- Blame it on the Rain
  10. and of course, "Invisible Touch" ! by you know who !!!

Interesting vision! But of course,it will never happen.Prog is immortal here!

My point is that the people who run this site by including Styx, Triumph, etc. think they can turn people on to prog by including "Prog related". Instead, you water down the genre and you have fans of styx thinking they listen to prog when they really don't

Meh! None of the inappropriate bands added here have made a general impression...they have not distrubed the balance of immortal prog (yet?).

I move that all the artists you mentioned be added at least under prog related.

Well, they do use the same 12 note scale that prog artists do, so they must be related under the very ambiguous "prog-related" definition.

You are from the Phillipines ? In 2012, there is a popular prog singer from the Phillipines which does Dan Fogelberg cover tunes.

Why do bizarre threads always pop up at night when no Admins around?

i guess meurg doesn' like 2012 humor. it's ok. i happen to know that in the year 2012, he will become a huge "pretty fly prog" sub genre fan.

In 2012, Meurg will absolutely do anything to see his favorite hip-hop-prog band in concert.

now this visions turn into something strange...bands added is one thing...but people's choices......that truly will stay immortal...

BTW what will I love in 2012?

majestic: my point wasn't to be silly, but to satirical about how this website which used to be so picky about what it would include in the archives, has gotten really sloppy over the past few months allowing bands like triumph, and a collaboration with george michael and lisa stansfield. of course, i don't believe britney spears or n-suck would ever be here, but the way this site is going... who knows ?

if you are going to include "prog related", why not zeppelin, hendrix, or how 'bout the Beatles. Let's face it- without SPLHCB, there would be no prog.

Ok,very funny.

I am flattered that you believe I have so much influence on the site.

Just for the record:Styx were on this archive long before I even knew it existed.

As for Triumph, well I altered their "genre" from Art Rock to Prog-Related so that kind of tells you were I am coming from as far as they are concerned. The person who "added" Triumph is no longer with us. ELO? Well that wasnt down to me either. If I was the webmaster they wouldnt be here, but I am not.

So,the guy responsible for the Prog-Related and Proto-Prog Categories is the webmaster,Max.

He can be contacted via mailto:[email protected] - [email protected] if you really want to discuss your disatisfaction or is this whole thread a thinly disguised attack on me? Oh and multiple membership is prohibited and also very cowardly when used in this manner.

Prog Related essentially means "Not Prog". I'm surprised that some people can't get that into their heads.

That's funny you should say that. Glass Hammer covered Fogelberg's "Longer" on its Shadowlands CD. Although it is one of the weaker songs on that CD, they were successful in transforming a pop song into a fairly good prog song.

On another point, if PA is so "diluted" in the future, why don't you just take all that energy you're putting into criticizing the site and make you're own?

And finally, I would encourage you to remain in 2006, or go even further back if you like. You do realize that the world ends in 2012 according to the Mayan calendar?

lol truth is sometimes funnier than fantasy.

and I'm just being satirical. Overall, I enjoy progarchives. I just find the inclusion of triumph and a george michael album to be sort of amusing.

And the Mayans are quite right. I know President (Hillary) Clinton was PMSing and everything, but she could have considered the rest of us when she decided to blow up the earth.

I think I'll stick around this forum for a while...

my top 10 prog groups other than triumph and george mchael(the wham years):

  1. Genesis
  2. Gentle Giant
  3. Mike Oldfield
  4. Moody Blues
  5. Rush
  6. Yes
  7. ELP
  8. Pink Floyd
  9. Caravan
  10. Camel

A shame you don't come from one more year in the future.  Then you'll see what happens to this site once it is taken over by the Velvet Crew and renamed "Walrus Archives".

HAHAHAHAHAH!!!  Roger Waters is considered 'Prog Related', man!  And surely he is prog as all hell.  By the way... I request that Waters be moved out of Prog Related if people regard him as such a poor musician because of it.

Thyme Traveller.  I like Styx.  I think and Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are both prog albums.  I really thought that the ability to make a thyme machine would have somehow shed more light on your knowledge of prog music.

I am happy to believe you,but I wondered why you chose to single me out seeing as we have had no contact.

How a non-member would come to the conclusion that I was resaponsible for policy or those inclusions is beyond me.Hence my thoughts that you werent all you seem to be.

If Max ie "The Boss" wants the site to include Prog-Related bands then that's his prerogative and if our democratic system that allows Collaborators to choose bands to add occasionally lets in bands that dont meet universal approval, then I can live with that. 1 or 2 dodgy ones out of over 2000 aint bad.

I tink that the prog-related bands they are where they belong, and is not like "they're not prog" just "they're close to be prog" but the George Michael disc is only here because is a Queen album, that's dont mean that he's prog or someting.

Speaking about the Aztec Sun stone, I found this and is litle chilling  (it's in Spanish, so you beter use Babel Fish, or search the info in english)

The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking is not prog, and Amused to Death is also not very progressive IMO.

BTW: Feel free to create an account at my website and submit some song ratings. I think that it makes no sense to try to determine the progressiveness of a band. Well, we can try - but there will always be inconsistencies, because most of the controversial bands made some albums which are not progressive at all, and people who don't like the band will focus on these, while fans of the band will favor the more progressive ones.

TT,

While your initial post is based on exaggeration to make a point, there is an underlying accuracy to your perception of the site. The owners have indicated that they wish to widen the appeal of prog, by attracting in people who may not otherwise come across it. One of the strategies for doing this is through categories such as "Prog related".

This inevitably means that this site will be more inclusive than other prog sites, that is how the owners chose to style it. There are of course plenty of other prog sites, with differing philosophies, so if this one doesn't work for you, you do have a choice. I mean no malice by that, it is just a pragmatic observation.

You're attack on Tony R was misplaced and misinformed. Tony, like myself and Trostsky, is not one of the site owners. He simply gives up his time to administer the site, and to help the owners in achieving their vision.

Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking isn't prog?  You've listened to it, right?  And I still beg to differ about Amused to Death.  I can sort of see where you are coming from but I still disagree.  Besides, what I was arguing really was Waters' proggy-ness.  And, being from Pink Floyd and inspiring almost everything they did, I am going to go ahead and say that he is quite the progressive genius.
