Have to say 'Argus' is by far my favourite of their albums. Their first two are excellent though, but I was hugely disappointed with 'Wishbone Four' when I heard that, and don't like the albums I've heard since that era like 'Number The Brave', 'There's The Rub' or the songs from 'Here To Hear' I've heard.
It's a shame their last album, 'Bona Fide', wasn't on there, as it seemed to me it was a, well, bona fide return to form. Indeed, two songs on there, 'Ancient Remedy' and the superb 'Come Rain Come Shine', were as good as anything on 'Argus' imo. Their 90s 'comeback' album of sorts 'Illuminations' was OK too.

Argus , to me it sounds as genuine progressive rock feautring great duo-guitar play, alternating compositions and some subtle keyboard work.

"Argus" overshadows all their other albums. The self titled first one was excellent though. Their lowest point by some way has to be "Locked in", I never wanted to hear a vocoder again after that album.
By the way, their song "Everybody needs a friend" is an absolute classic. It's on "Wishbone 4" I think.

Exactly ... I voted for Argus because virtually every song is special
... and the album is one of the greatest ever, by any band, IMO
But before I heard Argus, I was quite in love with 4 ... a patchier
effort ... but with at least three superb songs ... including the
sentimental Everybody Needs A Friend ... the gorgeous Ballad Of The
Beacon, Sorrel (another marvellous wah-wah solo if I recall) and the
mean closer Rock'N'Roll Widow ...

Argus for me to, easily their best
Followed respectively by the debut and Pilgrimmage
I love the Live Dates album, too
However I was always so disappointed at 4 , with its basic rock attitude, what a bringdown after Argus.

Have to say I agree that I found 'Wishbone 4' something of a let down after the brilliance of 'Argus'. Other albums like 'There's The Rub' and 'Number The Brave' were somewhat weak too in my opinion.

One vote for Pilgramage, a much underrated album that gets overshadowed by Argus. It has a lot of tracks every bit as good - Vas Dis, title track, Valediction, Lullabye and Alone. Love that twin lead guitar sound of Ted and Andy.
It is partially spoilt though by two godawful 'boogie' tracks Jailbait and Where were you Tomorrow? From the Ash albums I've heard the first three are the strongest. After that they seemed to get less ambitious and more West Coast.

The first album. My first exposure to the band - when Peel was pushing their music - the one which has consistency. And the album's long track Phoenix is a gem and not the overblown version heard on live albums. Problem with Argus and Pilgrimage is WA can't make their mind up whether to decent prog or decent AOR, so we get albums with both.

I voted for Argus too because it is more of a prog album, though I like all of their albums and they are consistant in their quality with the exception of Wonderful Stash, never could work out the philosophy behind that one. It is one of the few bands of whom I have a full discography, except their latest release Power of Eternity which I am trying to find. Definitely an underrated band.

Since you asked for studio albums only it has to be Argus, although I first got into Wishbone Ash listening to Live Dates. It blew me away and I guess that's partly because of the songs from Argus presented live. Throw Down The Sword, Warrior, Blowin' Free and King Will Come - amazing stuff!

Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash, the band formed a couple of years back by the former bassplayer and lead vocalist, have also re-recorded Argus. A studio version in their case, with John Wetton and Geoff Downes guesting on Throw Down The Sword (Asia share management with MTWA, and of course JW was briefly in Wishbone, replacing Martin who had just left, just prior to joining Asia).
Looking forward to hearing it, as they were stunning live in Glasgow earlier this year.
Argus Then Again Live (recorded for US station XM radio in front of a small audience during the summer) is tremendous. We'll be seeing WA (the current lineup, led by sole survivor Andy Powell) soon, for the fifth time since 2006. A great band.

Wishbone Four was my first album by them, and I wasn't sure I liked it. But then it grew on me over time. Later I got Argus and New England, both of which I like a lot. Had a chance to see them play in a small club, too, and that blew me away even more. They're fantastic (and tight) as a live band.

They were progressively more boring than their first album was already boring from the start. A more astute group then were Black Widow.
|
Posted By: Certif1ed
Date Posted: August 16 2009 at 06:01
Not sure if "astute" is a criteria for Wishbone Ash's music - it sounds good to me from whichever intelligence it's using. I don't think the music seeks to gain any kind of advantage necessarily - but it certainly did. You can easily hear the huge number of bands they influenced (as well as their obvious influences).
I haven't listened to Black Widow much, but what I've heard doesn't seem to have the "big picture" viewpoint that Wishbone Ash clearly did - Black Widow's musicial designs and compositional techniques seem less "astute" if anything (if that's really the word you meant), IIRC.
I'll revisit their material at my earliest convenience, as it's true that you don't always pick everything up in a few listens - I always enjoy listening to music from that time.
I disagree that WA were progressively more boring - the first album is OK - obviously down tempo and free from unnecessary intricacies, but not what I'd call boring. Pilrimage is superb - a real blast off by comparison, and Argus is the culmination of that progression, as far as I cal tell. Sounds to me like they certainly got more interesting as they progressed - why would you think they got more boring (unless you simply didn't like it!)?
I was listening to Pilgrimage last night - it just seems to get better with every listen. I like Argus, but Pilgrimage just rocks. Nothing boring about it at all - depends on your attention span, I suppose...
------------- The important thing is not to stop questioning.

I was reading comments on Wishbone Ash. One person even called them boring. Boring?
With the internet you can find so much. I was a big fan up to WA 4, kinda drifted away with all the great groups at the time. I feel that Argus was the perfect album, start to finish. Andy and his Buds have done a great job keeping WA going strong. The remake of the Argus album on XM was great.
I saw them play at a small club in Ohio in 2007. They captivated the crowd start to finish. There are alot of Ash cd`s out there now. I like the live in Hamburg CD personally.
I can`t take a drive without poping a WA cd in the disc drive. I still have many favs. but Wishbone Ash is simply the best

Argus is my favorite. The King Will Come is the highlight of the album for me. And how could anyone not appreciate the lyrics of that song? I like Pilgrimage, Live Dates, and New England. That talk box guitar(Frampton style or Jeff Beck) always got to me, but the songwriting on NE is something that I can't pass up....In All Of My Dreams, come to think of it may be like early Camel...Moonmadness period. I never had the chance to hear Live Dates Vol.II. I bet that's a decent record to check out right?

I went for There's The Rub.
Argus is of course a classic and the first album is also indispensible in my books, but TTR has a great live sound with really up-front bass.
BTW - the fourth album is actually called Wishbone Four (not 'Four') and I don't think Illuminations should be included because it is the first of Andy Powell's many bogus albums featuring himself and unknown salaried sidemen, rather than the 'proper' band itself (with a quorum of original members). That stuff is like what Roger Waters said of Floyd without himself ... a passable forgery. It is not really true of Floyd - but definitely is of Wishbone Ash.
