While I love much of ELP's material, I was wondering if I was the only one who thought their albums seemed to fall a bit short from being essential. There are always some great tunes on every one of them, but the albums always seemed to be spotted with

Brain Salad Surgery is widely regarded as their definitive work BUT the whole collection in this period is worth having.ELP was like a musical project.Following their evolution through those first 5 albums is fascinating. The simple an

If I was forced to give up my entire record collection but 5 albums... I would give them all up but:

Brain Salad Surgery

Tarkus

Trilogy

WOrks

Emerson Lake and Palmer...

and then I'd beg like hell to keep "

tarkus and debut self titled are the best with BSS and Pictures following close behind.  Those are really the only four i really like.

I think the first five ELP albums ("Emerson, Lake & Palmer", "Pictures At An Exhibition", "Tarkus", "Trilogy" and "Brain Salad Surgery") are essential, but then I'm a big fan of ELP. If you really pressed me I could do without the first album, but w

So in my book, they are the only essential prog albums to have!

please don't dislike me for having an opinion TF

I love you Greg... I just think your musical tastes are sorely lacking... You need to be hit by the ELP Genie.. or the ELP weenie... I prefer the last one myself..

Actually I love alot of their music., but perhaps I suffer from Gentle Giant syndrom....I don't care for attempted humor very often in prog and their silly hoedown songs irritate me a bit..

I still don't like Yes all that much, but as I promised

I love their albums up to BSS for what they are, warts and all. Yes, if I was being honest there proably are a few bits which are disposable, the drum solo on "Tank" (I don't appreciate drum solos), the piano solo on side 2 of Tarkus, but little els

I remember the first time I heard the Three Fates.. I wanted to just skip over to the second one.. cause the first one was a bit harsh... Now I'm completely attached to that Hammond... it means ELP to me!

I think the self titled through BSS are essential.  Each album was bit more daring and they pushed the envelope that much farther on each one of those as a band. They al

Brain Salad Surgery is, in my opinion, the most complete ELP album out there. I have to agree that Benny the Bouncer isn't a favorite of mine, but it's nonetheless an outstanding piece. Jerusalem is wonderful. Toccata is excellent. Still You Turn Me On is

BSS's place in history is assured; but I will always reach for Trilogy or Works first. I think Greg Lake has never sounded more heartfelt and soulful than he does on these two albums.

I'm all for a bit of humour in my rock music, so Benny, Jeremy and Eddy get the big  from me. And would Nursery Crime or Selling England be any better without Harold The Barrel or ...Epping Forest? Nah!

Well after many listens to BSS I have changed my mind. This one would get 4 stars. Still can't call it a masterpiece but I would definitely call it essential.
