Hey All,
I'm racking my brain and cannot come up with any truly satisfactory bands that have either a sound or an essence quite like Queen's. Anybody have any thoughts?

No band can ever reach Queen levels..
Anyway I have been impressed by Keane which in some songs especially vocalist has something in common with Queen songs, but I wud not dare to compare with Queen anyway..

The Darkness?
Uriah Heep (the "Heep Choir")
Closest I could think of - and while I fully acknowledge that Heep preceeded Queen with the vocal choir thing, Queen did do it better...
...and I was joking about The Darkness...

Not even Queen sounds like Queen anymore...
There are only two bands I can think of that made me go "That really sounds like Queen"
80's hair-metal band Extreme (especially on III Sides To Every Story
with the vocals and the grand sound. Check out 'Rest In Peace' on that
album to hear what I mean) and early 90's alt band Spacehog (blended
both Bowie and Queen into an unusual mix, too bad it couldn't have been
more interesting. Check out 'The Chinese Album' for the most obvious
sign of influence.)

A.C.T. is like Queen, Saga, and Prog metal combined. Although the music might not be similar to Queen's, the vocals are very similar.

Wasn't there some band called "Jelly" or something like that in the
90's? I remember hearing that they were heavily Queen-influenced. I
vaguely remember agreeing with that synopsis, to a point.

THANKS all for sharing. Still trying to wrap my ears around this one.
Empathy: I think you're referring to Jellyfish, who I adore. Their approach is more playful and less melodramatic than Queen's, though beautifully played with blissful melodies and harmonies.
RobertPlant: I have not checked out A.C.T. Definitely tell me more.
Dante: thanks for the tip on Extreme. I never would have guessed. As for Spacehog, I kind of remember them from a bunch of years ago. I'll have to revisit them. Thanks.
IF ANYONE COMES UP WITH ANYTHING ELSE, PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING. BIG THANKS!!!!

I've got a disc by a group called Rough Silk that kinda sounds like Queen, but nowhere near over-the-top. They're more like Queen in their straight-ahead rock moments like Hammer To Fall, Tie Your Mother Down, or I Want It All.

Early Sparks records are very Queen-like
Although you could never confuse them with Queen, Max Wabster was one of the more inventive hard-pop rock band around with a very wide scope in their songwriting
One minute, these guys could sound like Sheer Heart Attack and the next minute , not far away from somebody To Love on ADATR
And although they did not have the Hard Rock touch of Queen, 10CC had also that classy progressive pop touch

There was a hard rock band in the 80's that went by the name of Grand Prix.
Their singer was a dead ringer for Freddie Mercury.Later,Bernie Shaw sang for them before being drafted by Uriah Heep.
Other than that maybe Magnum would qualify has Queen-like,especially their early albums.

Here we go...
The most obvious one is Uriah Heep, who set the template for the harmonies that Queen would make famous. I always prefered Uriah Heep anyway myself, even if Queen made more coherent and consistent albums (earlier anyway)...
Some may joke about The Darkness, but their new album 'One Way Ticket To Hell (And Back)', minus the overtly twee 'Girlfriend', is absolutely fantastic- it harks back to 'Queen II', with the same producer and some brilliant rock songs. It's much more ambitious and far better than their debut imo.
Sparks were indeed Queen-esque, with their epic, intelligently crafted, falsetto heavy pop/rock tunes (that occasionally verged on prog imo).
I also agree than 10cc had a certain Queen-ness about them- 'The Original Soundtrack' and 'Sheet Music' particularly so. Other, later albums were not as inventive but still highly enjoyable...
The Sweet have often been compared to Queen. However, tread carefully- singles like 'Fox On The Run', 'Blockbuster', 'The Six Teens' and 'Action' are very Queen-esque (but with the Sweet's own style), but their albums aren't like this at all. They are, in fact, the work of a very credible and inventive act indeed- more akin to Deep Purple than The Sweet. Great albums, but for Queen-ish sounds, get a best of the Sweet- there are many to choose from!
Magnum I'm not so convinced of- 'Kingdom Of Madness' has elements of Queen's sound, but otherwise they have a strong individual sound.

I think more recently Muse can sound Queenesque, especially on their Absolution album, listen to Time is Running Out for example. I think it's more accident than design though, they have a smilar spirit and eagerness to entertain.
I'm waiting for the cries of derision.

Have to agree with Fede- NO band sounds like Queen. True originaters. That said, I also agree with Jools; Muse is a great band with Queen qualities, namely the vocals. Also, check out an American band called Ours. The singer is amazing. A cross between Freddie and Jeff Buckley, with heavy guitars and super-melodramatic songs(not prog though). I've seen them 3 times, and I have NEVER heard a vocalist replicate the album vocals so perfectly. They also used to do a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody in their live show......

Queen was absolutely unique, Freddies voice can't be compared with anybody else and Bryan May's guitar is also one on a kind.
Styx and lets add ELO had great chorus also, but they were no match for Queen IMHO.

Hey man, whatever you'r smoking, sue your dealer, it's affecting you, this guys are a bunch of Bee Gee wannabees, their most famous song is the one in which they butcher Comfortably Numb.
Queen's stuff was original, and if you take the operatic characteristics it will no longer be Queen.
ELO had oiperatic characteristics, STYX a few, and even when they are not remotely similar to Queen, are much closer than The Scissor Sisters.

I know that Gentle Giant's song Knots on their album Octopus heavily influenced Queen's sound, also the Beatle's Abby Road album seems to me to have influenced Queen. I think you should seriously check these two out.

Are you serious? Not only are they nothing like Queen, but any comparison is doing the other band a disservice. I first became aware of Scissor Sisters when I happened to see them on SNL. I couldn't believe how bad they were. And then was astounded to hear people say they liked them (sorry if this seems harsh, but it really took me by surprise).
Some have tried to do what Queen did, but no one has been able to fully pull it off. At times they rocked as hard as anyone else, at other times they were like a cabaret act. Somehow it meshed wonderfully.

Yes, Gentle Giant's mullti-part vocal harmonies reminded me of Queen...on "Gentle Giant and "acquiring the taste" albums.
