You are missing out!
There are too many of these Dream Theater/Symphony X, etc. polls, but my vote, of the three, is Dream Theater.

Dream Theater, their music demands more instrumental technique than Pain of Salvation and have more variation than Symphony X. Dream Theater is the quintessential Progressive Metal band.

Ok... we're talking about progressive metal bands in general, but there is some misconception here.
All the mentioned bands are quite different from each other, they could
carry different kinds of prog-heads at a time. All of them are awesome,
as a matter of fact.
DT - The fathers of prog, and my favorite band though. I just can't get
enough of the skills of these guys, they simply rock! I'm still in awe
everytime I hear 'Six Degress Of Inner Turbulence'
PoS - A more 'cerebral' band. The music and lyrics are nothing short of
amazing, incluiding Gildenlow's voice. I consider him to be a poet,
just look deeply into the meaning of the songs. The same with DT, they
don't tend to repeat themselves, each album is a different adventure.
SX - They're also good, of course. Michael Romeo has its moments,
alongside with Jason Rullo. The problem is all of their albums seems
the same, a lack of variety is present. I hope that will change with
their forthcoming album 'The Dungeon'.
So, thank you for reading. I hope you didn't fall asleep with my coments ![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

I think you changed something,
"The Dungeon" is the studio, not the name of the new album
Anyway I don't think there's no variety between the albums. Each album is totally different, imo!

In such comments like "all their albums are too much like each other", i see a lack of inadequate listening and evaluating...

Wow I'm convinced, just think differently from the other guy. I'm actually going to agree with him Symphony X has a much too similar sound to all of their albums. A lof of their song structure follows the same format. The shorter songs also feature way too similar riffs to other Symphony X songs. Michael Romeo uses very similar rythymn figures.
