I guess narrow. I like all subgenres of prog, but most non prog music puts me to sleep(except classical). In comparison, there's much more punk(), hard rock, pop, and metal bands then there are prog. So an average rock fan would consider me close minded.

I am really wide. (You know, this thread does have a certain provocative appeal to it)

My collection includes anything from MF Doom (hip-hop) to Dave Brubeck to De Facto (Dub music) to The Mars Volta. Also, a few ethnic bands, some more modern jazz, and a fair amount of pop-rock (such as Lost Prophets, Saves the Day, System of a Down, etc.)

I think the largest genre in my collection is definitely prog, though. A lot of classic prog, a lot of modern prog (prog-metal, neo progressive, etc) and a fair bit of post-rock. So I'd say I'm pretty wide, as it were.

Prog, classic rock, singing poetry, Russian rock, some old pop (ABBA, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Sinatra,...), sometimes jazz, blues, rock'n'roll (mostly Elvis) and classic music.

That's a good question.... I would also say narrow, but making progress. I usually listen to metal at least 75% of the time, but lately I've been starting to pay more attention to classical (IE: Beethoven... I know many would argue that he was a romantic, but let's not start that) and especially jazz fusion (Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, and Shawn Lane).

Edit: Oh yeah, and of course I listen to prog rock and blues/hard rock, lol. And even a little bit of soul... like Marvin Gaye. But it's still metal most of the time, for me.

An average person would call me close minded.Only prog and classical are the styles of music that I really love and maybe jazz. There are bands, artists from other genres who I like, but I could live without them.

I don't consider myself close minded. Prog, jazz and classical  offer more diversity than all other genres together.

Even subgenres could be very diverse. For instance Yes, VDGG and Genesis are very different altough all are listed as symponic prog.

Music is just music to me....as a musician, and hell, just as any appreciator of the arts...if you can't find one single thing to latch onto and say you liked about something then you're in it for the wrong reasons.   It's much easier to be negative than positive.

I probably have a recording of some sort in every genre of music, there may be some artists I don't like but in general I can find something of interest in all music.

My music collection is generally quite broad; ranging from James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Carpenters through to Slayer..

My prog tastes are probably fairly narrow compared to some folk around here. I dont listen to much prog that isn't 'classic era' and 'symphonic' a few Canterbury and Neo bands being the exception...

My taste in music is about as wide as anybody's.

Friends always laugh because when they drop in, they never know what I'll be listening to. From big band jazz to obscure prog to polka to Sugar Minot to AC/DC to something that's on the pop top 10. You name a category and I can probably name at least a song that I like. Now, mind you, some music I take more seriously (I like it because I think it's good) and I like listening to cheesey stuff (for the laugh).

I rarely say anything sucks because there's likely something I'll like about a song. I consider "that sucks" to be the most unimaginative way to comment on a song... except Celine Dion, her music sucks.

They are different, but only in terms of "shape". I think (I think) diversity has much more to do with different backgrounds or conceptual bases. Yes, VDGG and Genesis are more or less into the same line of creation, while Primus and Sonic youth are not. I don't know if this is clear enough. If you have three different looking persons, but they all are, for example, conceptual artists, then they are not different. Not so much, at least. On the other hand, you can have three persons that are almost clones. If one is a fan of sports, the second is some kind of Hippie and the third is a Bussines man, then you have diversity. It's the same way with music. The base concept is what gives you diversity, not line up differences, like two Italian prog bands, one having a flute and the other not, but both having that very "disctintive" () Italian prog feelling. Sorry about that, you Italian prog fans.

I also don't think that line up makes the difference. All three mentioned bands have their

own approach to write songs/albums. They have their own  imagination.

It's not necessary that a Genesis-fan enjoys the music of Yes. And not all fans of Yes like Genesis.

Close to the Edge

Supper's Ready

A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers

This is more than just a matter of shape or lineup. This epics don't have much in common in basic concept and in atmosphere.

Some would say I'm narrow minded, but I probably know much more bands than an average person of my age and country. Narrow minded for me are those who like what is in the media. There are lots of people that like a band because it is popular ou it is called alternative. I mean, in 1996, 1997, 1998, every common adolescent would hate rap, hip hop and so on. Then rap became mainstream and people started to love first Brazilian rap artists, then the foreign ones. Lots of girls who used to love Spice Girls, Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys and so on started to listen to Eminem, Nelly, etc. It's narrow minded for me. People who underappreciate music. Appreciate the fashion.

And here we have a serious social problem, that Brazilian indians and african descendants claim that a person hitting a can is social culture of good quality, refined, while a european descendant doing the same thing would be called a mental handicapped. Nothing against any social group, but I for me music has to have something to do with musical theory, harmonies, melodies, et cetera.

But I appreciate not only prog rock, but also old rock 'n roll, hard rock, some heavy metal, classic rock, blues, some jazz, some folk, some "pop" (what they would call pop in seventies, not nowadays), classical music. I don't consider it to be narrow minded, while people nowadays only like electropop, "romantic pop", pop punk, "alternative" rock, hip hop and some regional songs from each country.

And I never say something is bad without knowing what it is.

Pretty wide, not I'm close-minded enough not to listen to music I don't enjoy that's popular.

I listen to Classical, some hard rock (LedZep,Hendrix,GN'R), classic rock (Beatles, Doors, Dire Straits, Simon & Garfunkel, Solo Beatles, Al Stewart), classical, groove metal (Pantera), prog (Genesis,KingCrimson,Camel,Focus,Yes,CAN,ELP,GentleGia nt,Mahavishnu Orchestra,Zappa) some "punk" (Strokes, Nirvana), some techno/electronic (Nathalie Pompougnac,BeverlyHillsCopTheme,Bjorn Lynne) and the odd French song/hip hop song ("Hey Ya" and "Chaccaron Maccaron"), some alternative (Muse,Radiohead) and even opera at times (Andrea Bocceli).

My musical spectrum is not limited to the popular bullsh*t, as is the case with most people.

Wide, probably. I don't really even have a favourite genre. For me music is mostly about art and self expression, so naturally, I'm not very accepting of pop music.
I think it's sort of a progression:

jazz
prog
psychedelic
acid
experimental
alternative
post grunge
grunge
heavy metal (Zeppelin, Sabbath)
speed metal, thrash metal, etc. (Metallica, etc.)
prog metal
death metal

1. Prog

2. Metal

3. Classic rock

4. 50s rock/Roots rock

5. Blues

Jazzfusion, some country(not Nashville), some classsical

I've always thought that my musical tastes were extremely wide-ranging, especially in recent years.  While prog makes up the largest single genre represented in my collection, I have what most people would consider well-represented collections of the following styles, too:

Classical    ( Medieval, Renaissance, Guitar, as well as more modern ).... about 80-100 titles.

Jazz   ( mostly on the ECM label, but also some big band, swing, "easy" ).... about 100 titles.

Country  ; ( from old bluegrass, western swing, 50's, 60's, and some recent )...  about 60 titles.

Folk and Celtic   ( Fairport, Steeleye type of stuff, singer-songwriters, traditional )... 100+

Avant-Garde Electronic   ( from Stockhausen up through recent ElectroAcoustic )...  120+

World   ( Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian, Balinese, European, etc. traditional mostly )...  100+

"Other" Rock   ( everything from the 50's up through today;  you won't see too many collections that have over 15 titles by both Gordon Lightfoot AND Nine Inch Nails! )...    1000+

Comedy, Soundtracks, New Age....    about 150 titles.

        Progressive stuff....   about 500-700 titles.

I'm underestimating all these numbers, since I also have hundreds of LP's and cassettes.

Make that two - although I've only got Dean Martin on compilations. I can't honestly think of a genre that I dislike, although some are not so well represented in my collection and prog probably accounts for about half of the CDs I own.

I think it is important to find a balance between open-mindedness and selectivity; too much open-mindedness just becomes arbitrarity. There are some musical styles I just don't feel at home with, which I call "Arschwackelmusik" (a term which is hard to translate; the best attempt I can come up with is "move-yer-ass music"). This is a term for all kind of music which is just mildly rhythmic without any complicated structure, like for example reggae (though I like the kind of dub-reggae the Ozric Tentacles occasionally play). When I dance I want to dance orgiastically, the whole body shaking, and I need the whole dance floor for it because I am prone to run from one corner of the room to the other while dancing. But for this I need something with a real drive. A good example for what I really like to dance to are the last 3 minutes of "Dance on a Volcano" by Genesis; after the words "Let the dance begin". With reggae I just can't do that, and I never understood how people can dance to reggae. It absolute bores me to death and certainly does not create any need to dance in me. But certain riffs just get me and make me want to go really mad on the dance-floor.
Ok, I'm weird.

I like a really wide range of styles ... in fact, I'm beginning to fear that people might confuse that with arbitrarity. But I'd like to think that I'm quite selective within each genre.

Ok, I'm weird.

You're perfectly normal. It is perfectly normal to move to music, whether one calls this movement dancing or not. I too usually can't sit still when I listen to music I like, I have to move around, often in a 'violent' or 'ritualistic' manner. It's a natural response to music. I am reminded of the time when the avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor met the neo-classical jazz trumpet player Wynton Marsalis for the first time and asked him whether he could dance to James Brown. 'Sure,' Marsalis answered. Taylor then asked him whether he could also dance to Albert Ayler. Marsalis could only stagger back, completely astonished. Guess whose music I enjoy more.

However, sometimes I don't move when I listen to music - I 'meditate' instead. Funnily enough, I can 'meditate' to any music I enjoy, and this includes a selection of artists from such genres as prog, jazz, rock, metal, blues, classical (in the broad sense, including XX c. and medieval), some pop, folk etc. etc. etc.  Basically I try to let the music itself lead me, and if it leads me somewhere interesting, I don't care about the genre.
