Woudn`t be cool if we could get together and discuss this unuqeu music over a period of perhaps a weekend.n It would require  a lot of  planning. What do you think.

Well, there have been some moves towards this thanks to sigods 'Prog Club' outings to gigs and meals in London. It's early days, but I'm sure it'll be an ongoing thing..

An international prog convention would be a great thing. Very difficult to organise though, I think; so many people, so many locations, commitments and circumstances etc. But, hey if you want to hire out Maple Leaf Gardens, for Progarchives forumers only, book Rush and several other prog bands, then I'll be there...  Should only cost a few million bucks, we'll have a whip round!

Hi Ian,

Long time no read.     For those newbies Ian Gledhill is one of our long term collab who has been not as present as before

Well we are having a small get-together 8 or 9 of us at the Pride of Paddington pub this friday at 6 PM local time , if you wish. We will head out for a Tandoori restaurant later and a few brews to cap the night of.

see the thread:

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17002&PN=1 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17002& amp;PN=1

But the idea pervades for more.

I'll see if we can organize something in Paris also this spring.

Maybe another meeting in Montreal, but lately you Quebecois have been less active.

From having experience with these kinds of gatherings in the States it is best to them around an event like  a concert or festival.  You will get more people to come and have a lot more fun.

Seriously...what would be the conversations....prog?!?...we already do that. Like I want to pay an enormous price to fly out to Europe to discuss prog. I'd rather be LISTENING to prog. I think my money would be better spent on more prog cds.

I recommend that all US prog archive members join us in San Francisco at the Cafe du Nord on February 19th to see The Syn in concert. What a classic prog experience this is going to be! (So what if the new CD is, well, not exactly on par with, say, CTTE?)

We could meet up for dinner at an Indian restaurant or something. Then talk prog and express our opinions about the European members and their idionsyncratic tastes in prog (especially the continental ones). Laughs will abound! Please consider it.

Actually, I don't live in S.F. but am driving there (approx. 100 miles) to go to this show; so you see, I am making an effort, so you should too! What's a couple of thousand miles? We're talking prog history here! Plus, again the chance to roast the euro-trash members of the forum.

Note to European members: I'm sorry about the "euro-trash" comment.

Great idea, what about in April, Riverside are playing in Zoetermeer !!

At that time I am on Aruba ( or  ?) for a 3 week holiday, fortunately I have seen Riverside last year but I am sure I will miss a great gig!

Are you also from The Hague mr. Glass House, in that case we could invite some progheads from Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, UK, Scotland and make them familiar with some very fine Dutch pubs, meanwhile discussing the entire progrock scene from 1967 until now, OK?

Perhaps Rick Wakeman will be interested if you deliver PROG CURRY ! Greece could be a nice place for a Progrock Archives convention too, every two years I visite Lesbos or other islands like Chios, real paradises!

Everyone who is interested in The Hague as a Prog Archives convention can send me a private message.

Where in The Hague do you live Glass House (I live in Loosduinen, Southern part)?

Sean

There's a good chance I can make Paris in the springtime, it's just a quick hop on the Eurostar and I for one would welcome the chance to see more of the Prog Archive members who couldn't make it to the meeting in London this Friday.

Garion81

That's a good point you make about basing a meeting around some kind of event like a live show. Who knows but if such a 'convention' of Prog Archive members were to gather pace we could (at some point in the future probably) be able to book a venue and an act. I would be happy to be involved in organising such a get together but before that I guess a decision would have to be made as to its location. Hypothetically, if such an event was a success it could be possible to alternate between Europe and Canada/The Americas where the majority of the forum members appear to be located.

I'm also very happy to travel to either Holland or Germany if interest gather pace there too.

is "Zaadam" the Dutch spelling for "Saddam"?  if so, I won't attend; else Friede and I will be glad to attend, provided it will not be on a day where other things are already planned (we'll be in the USA most of June and July, for example)

From what I gather if Jean and Friede are up to it, and most of the Dutch Colleagues (Joren, Huub, Erik etc...) are in and I am up to it also, this could make up to 10 or 12.

Buit first let's get a check on the date , before building up plans.

Great, the coffeeshop scene in Holland is (in)famous ! But that's not my cup of tea, I am more into good beers (see another topic). I hope, looking at the enthousiastic reactions from European progheads (France, Belgium, Holland and perhaps UK and Scotland) in this topic that we can plan a Prog Archives Convention in the forthcoming months. I would like to suggest that every interested proghead send a Private Message to me in order to plan something, OK?

The Fiddler is a great English pub, I am sure that I will watch their the World Champion matches from England, wonderful Birtish soccer atmosphere but before half time you are soaken of beer!

Did you know that in the past this place was a music store named Servaas Muziekhandel, here all the famous Dutch artists bought their music equipment like The Golden Earring, Q65, Finch and Earth & Fire! Nowadays the owner lives on a small island that he bought in the Caribbean.

Feeling a bit left out here... Is there another meeting place for us Aussie members (im sure im not the only one).

By the way, a get-together in The Hague sounds grand.  Parents came from holland originally, would make a good reason to 'come back' to the olde country.

Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, i could only attend a few years in the future.... Maybe we could make this an annual thing...

Or i could invent a time machine    (Heeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyy)

The 'Gevangenpoort' in The Hague (near 'Het Binnenhof' were our government settles) is a medieval building that was used a prison and where took place very gruesome torturing. This in order to get confessions, not only from thieves, witches and politicians also, as the saga tolds, a small group of hobbits that had visions of a future that was dominated by Moogs, Mellotrons and Hammonds! The hobbits their habits featured endless discussions about music, wearing t-shirts from unknown musicians like a certain Fish, a preference for complex music and long compositions and a tendency to feel superior to the popular musical taste were considered as extremely dangerous in Medieval Times. Soon they disappeared from the scene but in the Late Sixties the hobbits emerged and their music named 'progressive rock'  became very popular. Unfortunately 'De Gevangenpoort' is still a 'haunted house' when hobbits enter because 'De Gevangenpoort' epitomizes 'evil governments'  and they don't like the critical, creative and hedonistic hobbits SO YOU ARE WARNED  .... fellow hobbits  !

How do you want to go to The Hague, Oliverstoned, by train or car and is April 1st. OK?

I will make appointments with Glass House, Moogtron III, Sean Trane and perhaps BaldFriede, Joren and others if they agree with Fool's Day! The pictures look good, we will make time to visit the best.

Great plan. Last year it was only talk, talk, too much talk, rhublabla about a PA convention, now things are really happening. Cool!

Until now the 'Continental European Prog Archives Convention' features Moogtron III, Joren, Sean Trane, Oliverstoned, Glass House and myself for April 1st. in The Hague. If others are also interested, please send a message in order to arrange things seriously, OK?

April 1 is a Saturday - I could make it, but I'm planning to go to a jazz gig on the Friday night, and I'll need to check my work commitments ( I work some weekends). I'm definitely up for it in principle, though, keep me posted about the plans.

How was the vynil hunting?

I was mostly hunting for prog books (found loads of them too) ,but if Chris bought two records, I passed up on the SACD of Tago Mago. Had my revenge on sunday by buying four CDs in the megastores which are all open on sundays.

It really is time to stop the competitive divisiveness of where the best place to meet is.
Everyone should meet in a neutral spot.

Melbourne, Australia has a very temperate climate, great jazz most days of the week, excellent pubs and exotic eateries, is hosting the commonwealth games in March and has been voted, MOST liveable city in the world.
