i like a lot of prog but those are the last six cds i have gotten.

camel's debut, VDGG - the least we can do is wave to each other, GG - three friends, caravan - in the land of grey and pink, eloy's "inside" and focus - moving waves.  But actually I lied:  i got VDGG two weeks ago.  I ment to put Gong - Angels Egg.  Oh well.

Camel. Especially the albums Mirage, Moonmadness and Snowgoose.

Eloy.I havn't got past just owning the 'best of' collections of the others mentioned.Best Eloy albums I reckon:

Time To Turn/Planets

Power and The Passion

Live

I voted Camel mainly on the strength of Mirage, Snowgoose and Moonmadness.

Then in this order..

Focus, VDGG, Gentle Giant, Caravan..

Dont know anything about Eloy, I must admit. I'll have to do some homework.

Camel!

I saw them at Salford University in the late seventies and they where a great band live. I was stoned and the whole scene was different to the majority of other bands I'd seen. It was very polite and chilled and people wore Kafkans and didnt head-bang or boogie they kinda wobbled knowingly! Andy Latimer was coooool!Cool

Focus are worth getting to know. They can be a little erratic, but they always had a great guitar driven sound and a likeable eccentric Dutch vibe about them.

I reccomend 'Focus 3' and 'Hamburger Cocerto'

I was going for Camel till I noticed Caravan were sitting on a duck. I love both about the same, and they are related.

Camel! No question about it... I received from the band commanded by Andrew Latimer, my primary indoctrination to symphonic prog rock. One of my favorite bands, ever. One of my all time favorite albums is also by Camel. They represent much of that essential initiation I had towards prog rock. Long live the Camel!

(whoa! my first 1000 posts already! )

Actually I have never heard I.Q

I was irritated by Greenback's comment. There are quite a few prog bands I am not fond of either but Mr Ridout enlightened me in one of these forums that it  is not cool to throw alot of negativity around . I knew from a previous thread Greenback liked IQ so I lashed out...I am emotional that way....sorry.

Since Mr Ridout's comment I have tried to  refrain(until now that is...once again sorry to all I.Q fans) from making hurtful comments on bands I don't like. I'll save it for reviews only...

I don't think that Eloy are in the same league as the other bands - great space rock band, but nowhere near as self-styled or progressive as the other choices.

And so I pick Camel.

I know greenback from another forum, and that's just how he is.  There are many bands I could easily go on a long, passionate rant about the greatness of, the post after which he would just say "I hate (band name)!"  Not that there's anything wrong with getting right to the point, I'm just saying.

You don't have to be hurt because I bash a band I don't like! You will discover that there are, even in the prog world, bands who you find irritating, dull or whatever. To express your dislikes will give you a unique identity! For instance, a progger here in the name of richardh likes, like I do, Tangerine dream of the 80's, IQ, Rush of the 80's, Vangelis of the 80's, and so on... But he hates Triumvirat! WOOSH! I mean, that's a shock, but it is OK! He has the right to hate them,  it makes him different to me because of that! It is our identity!

Camel
Even though I have seen VdGG/Hammill nearly 50 times I can play Camel anytime of the day. With VdGG I sort of have to prepare myself?!?
I first saw Camel on the Moonmadness tour and they were
fantastic. When Moonmadness was released it didn't leave
my turntable for over a month.Only Genesis had,had that previous 'honour'.

1.Camel
2.VdGG
3.Genesis
4.King Crimson
5.Can.
6.Faust
7.Yes
8.Caravan
9.Neu
10.Gentle Giant

There is an important point in here, and it's that if someone is singing the praises of their favourite band , and discussing the details that they love  about the music, one of the most irritating things anyone can do is pop up and say "Hi, I think your favourite band is crap" .

It's not wrong to hold a different opinion - far from it! But if you're going to say that you don't like something, then please do the other person the decency of saying WHY - after all, they've taken the time to say WHY they DO like the band, music, etc, so to just say "Oh, that's crap", or "That's boring" is plain RUDE  in my opinion, and deserves all the flames it gets. I am particularly fond of flaming such rudeness  (and getting slapped on the wrist for it... ).

HOWEVER, it would be better to spare the flames - we are all united here by our love of prog . So if there's a discussion on a band you don't like and you MUST post something negative about them, do your fellow proggers the decency of explaining yourself and make valid points, or SHUT THE FK UP!!!

Sorry...

Got carried away there - but I wanted to get this one off my chest, as it seems there is a lot of it about at the moment. Nothing personal, gdub and greenback this isn't aimed at you - this is just the proverbial straw on the camel's back

With apologies to Peter for assimilating his style to make an announcement that he would make far more gently and succinctly...

The problem is that I cannot all the time bring my arguments here:

Here is for VDGG:

I'm sure they were enjoyable, but is it really Focus? I understand from someone else who saw them, Akkerman is not touring with them, and Van Leer no longer plays flute. Is it true??Confused

Posted By: Carl floyd fan
Date Posted: October 04 2004 at 15:26
well akkerman and van leer (flute in hand) preaty much make up the band so it doesn't sound to interesting.  Granted I LOVE focus, but come on, van leer is just as good at the flute as Ian anderson and its a prominent part of there music.  Can you imagine Ian w/o the flute....I'd pass on that concert!

That was a tough decision... GG, Focus, Caravan and VDGG, are all in my top 10 or so, I think. I only have one album by Eloy (Ocean), and on the strength of that they don't quite measure up to the likes of those four.

As for Camel... *falls asleep*. Oh, sorry, what were talking about?

  • Camel bores me
  • VDGG is great band for a third place after GG
  • Gentle Giant is an acquired taste that is growing inside me, but still not a hardcore fan despite having heard them for decades.
  • Caravan is precious but can't be compared with any of this bands, a totally different sound and would be unfair with them with any band outside the Canterbury Scene where they are top.
  • Eloy lives me cold, too derivative from almost every great band somehow Neo Prog meets Neo Pink Floyd.

My vote goes for FOCUS
