...what do you guys listen to?

Personally I also listen to death/gore/black/whatever metal, but I also listen to jazz and classical (strange combo)... Only stuff I really can't stand is rap and mainstream stuff, although sum41/blink186/trash23 like bands make me want to beat my self to death with my own feet.

Cheers.

Interesting question. Other than prog, I listen to a lot of older pop artists(James Taylor, Carole King, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, The Who, The Beatles, later Crack The Sky, John Palumbo, etc) and newer pop artists(Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Darren Hayes, Savage Garden, Blessid Union Of Souls.) I also enjoy some heavy metal(Sabbath, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, etc), Alternative bands(REM, U2, Matchbox Twenty, Depeche Mode, etc) and some older grunge(The Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, etc.) I pretty much like everything that's musical(this excludes rap, of course, because we all know that rap isn't musical.  )

I don't like that one so much. Thumbs Down (Nor do I know how to get an avatar from elsewhere!) I'm rather attached to my old one (one of the first in use here!); I find that the flame "jumps out" at me when I'm scanning for my old posts (to find funny stufff we wrote in the glory days -- call me sentimental); there's something to be said for consistency; and shouldn't the (honourable) onus be on the new user to make the change, in any case

Not the end of the world, I know, but if I switch (and ProgRocker keeps the candle) I'll always be confused as to my true identity....Wink

I'm probably the most limited of everyone here since I only listen to musical styles that have common factors. My three favourite forms of music are prog, electronic and classical because there are strong links and similarities between them,ie.sophistication, refinement, intelligence, innovation,su perior musicianship and broad artistic scope and vision. All those things must be there for me to enjoy music and so I have no time for anything simple and three chord,verse/chorus/verse/chorus based. In fact it gives me a fullblown panic attack, and I'm being serious about this,to listen to anything 3 minute,3 chord verse/chorus based. If I'm forced to listen to anything like that my breathing gets restricted,I start sweating heavily,my knees turn to jelly and my stomach turns upside down.Sort of like a claustrophobic stuck in a lift.  And,once again,I'm not joking now,it's really true. So one of my favourite albums of all time is "Amarok" by Mike Oldfield but if someone puts on "Moonlight Shadow" I'll be out the door quicker than a...a....erm...something that's really quick!

I couldn't possibly list it all - as a life-long student of the amazing phenomenon that is music, I really do listen to and appreciate just about anything (except C&W and so-called "R&B").

What have I listened to (and enjoyed) recently that can't be considered prog?

The Smiths; Rank

Didier Squiban; Rozbas

The Beatles; Revolver

Rob Zombie (can't remember the name, but a friend of mine bought a DVD - mindless headbanging stuff, but great!).

Muse; Absolution. I still say these guys are prog - especially this album.

Mint Tattoo (S/T album). Formed from the detritus of Blue Cheer, stompin' hard rock with proggy pretensions in the track titles.

All-time non-prog faves include;

Tartini, Boyce, Verdi, Schumann, Beethoven, Mozart, Messiaen, Debussy, Dvorak

John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Beatles, Blue Cheer, Shocking Blue, Electric Prunes, 13th Floor Elevators, Edgar Broughton Band, Love, Incredible String Band, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix

Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Metallica, Slayer, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Pantera, Rammstein, Linkin' Park

Fun Lovin' Criminals, Seahorses, Wonderstuff, the Smiths, Radiohead (surely they're prog?), Bush, Nirvana, Oasis

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Sly and Robbie, Mad Professor, Scientist, Augustus Pablo, Dub Syndicate, Prince Far-I, Mark Stewart and the Mafia, Burning Spear

Roni Size, Aphrodite, LTJ Bukem, Adam F, Dieselboy

Paul van Dyke, Karl Jenkins (Enigma)

More recently - Jet, the Strokes, White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand

...and everything else I've forgotten...

Posted By: sigod
Date Posted: September 29 2004 at 07:56

When it's not prog, I listen to a lot of Post Rock acts such as;

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Fantastic slabs of art rock/grunge/ambient

Stars Of The Lid - Ambient/space distortion duo

Fly Pan Am - Lo-fi electronica

Slint - Proto post rock

FourTet - Strange electronica kid.

Aphex Twin - Even stranger electronic kid

Other than that, there is usual raft of thirtysomething white boy bands that I dig; XTC (Yeeeaaaa!!!), Franz Ferdinand, Cardiacs (UK Bizzare semi-punk prog), ELO, Aimee Mann, Deep Purple, The Pixies, Michael Hedges (RIP) and, and...er loads of bands.

What you must understand, Mr. dude, is any child given a name, such as Peter, which has serious phallic implications, causes the child to grow up being beaten, abused, debased and ridiculed. As they mature, er, actually, age would me more appropo, they develop the need to PRETEND they are superior to their peers.

Anyway, Mr. Rideout obviously struggles with a major lack of self-esteem. It is our duty, nah, our mission, to help Peter with this issue. Make him feel as though we respect him and that he has superior conversational skills and allow him to win an argument once in a while.

Above all, Mr. dude, we must not let him know what we are doing. Let the poor man's ego heal, even at our own expense. Jeez, could you image the hell he went through growing up with a name like PETER. Crikey, his parents must be brutal.

Remember, mums the word.

Well since I discovered this website (I'm just resently plugged in) I'm listening solely to prog music, It's 2,5 gb download, so aproxx 40 hours of music, so it'll take some time to listen to it all, I discovered some new bands this way, so my guess is I will not have the time this year to listen to anything else.

Otherwise I would listen to about everything (except for R&B which makes my nostrills curl, and provokes agressive behaviour from my cat)

My favourites besides prog are, Led Zepp; all of their albums are masterpieces, Deep Purple (lazy from In Rock), Cream, Queen (early works up ontill News of the world and The miracle and Innuendo), 10cc, the early works of Elton John (madman across the water is a true classic    ), Beatles, The who, gothic, classical  music, Beethoven's 5th, and 9th, some Rossinni and Tsjaikovski (firebird suite, rite of spring), Carl Orff etc.

I somethimes enjoy Eminem, great lyrics, Jazz (only when I'm in the mood), and a lot of alternative rock music.

Very nearly everything, apart from blues, modern pop music, reggae, ska, punk (although I do listen to some avant-garde punkers), and most things written before 1780 with the exception of Bach, Beethoven and Haydn.

Yes, even hip-hop now (not "bling-bling" rubbish, you understand).

However, mainly what I'd say I was into apart from prog is at the minute jazz and chilled out electronica, but usually (melodic) doom metal and neo folk.

Still, there's probably a prog band influenced by every style mentioned on here and far, far more so who needs to look outside the world of prog?

I find Dave Matthews Band on my CD a lot - good musicians.

Growing up it was Blue Oyster Cult all the way.

I still listen to a lot of older metal: Scorpions, UFO, Accept, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Y&T. I can't listen to new ("nu") metal.

Growing up in Buffalo, I still listen to a lot of Billy Sheehan's old band, Talas.  I must also admit I listen to another band from Buffalo, the Goo Goo Dolls. Not many bands come from Buffalo, so I try to support them.

BTW: if you ever see an old Talas CD, pick it up! Billy Sheehan is (and was) God.

I like METAL (doom/black/death/thrash/plain ole HEAVY metal).

I also listen to gothic, industrial, some punk, weird/exxxperimental sh*t, jazz and just old-fashioned, simple ROCK.

When was that? I thought he had a 'rediscovery of himself' time when he did the (overlong) Incantations.

Anyway, I have remained an Oldfield fan even when he has turned to a 'Let's make some few bucks more of Tubular Bells' period. That is, I'm lost forever in my Oldfield fandom.

As for what else I listen: I still listen to many rock/pop groups I was a fan before I discovered prog: Dire Straits/Knopfler, The Waterboys (DREADFUL last record, BTW), Battiato... I also usually listen to celtic music, but I'd rather have some celtic prog, as I easylly get tired of the most traditional groups. English folk is also usually in my menu. And even some metal, in the form of the group Rhapsody (but, on second thought, these guys are really prog, so....)

I guess the real appeal of WS is the attention to detail paid in the reproduction of the instrument sounds, and the clean stripped-down lines. "There's No Home For You Here" is my favourite of their tracks - I love the moment where the voices harmonise above a simple guitar feedback. Maybe I'm just wierd...

Sorry, Dick, but I just hate it when someone drops in on a thread about people's favourite music and just says "Actually, I think your favourite music is boring" and leaves it at that - while I respect your opinion in most cases, a subjective little dump like that is plain annoying!

Paco Fox,I agree with you in your Oldfield worship. Although I would rate Tangerine Dream as my favourite music of all time overall,Mike is still the one who's responsible for most of my "chicken skin" moments. I lost him in the 80's though when he commenced his pop wilderness years, and Velvet is quite right,it was with "Earth Moving" that his religious ramblings became obvious, but there were probably traces of it earlier like "In High Places". "Navigator to heaven",indeed. Give me a break!. And "Heaven's Open" is half absolutely awful and half absolutely wonderful. The wonderful part is of course the masterpiece "Music From The Balcony".

    Cert

You have to agree that one person's cup of tea/favourite listening isn't going to be another's. So it is inevitable that what one find intellectually stimulating, is boring to another person (remember there is a whole raft of folk out there who would dump the whole of prog into a bin labelled "Boring" - or under some other derrogatory label). I think it is reasonable here for me to say I've found some Radiohead boring - but it was throw away line, in context with what I thought were abbrieviated statements. With time and fuller consideration I wouldn't have used a sloppy term like 'boring' - instead "musically dry and something I can't always get my head around", would be better from my viewpoint.

Now I read what you thought of my "opinion" three times, before I realised you were taking the Michael, and my reply was duly lighthearted (as well as being probably lightheaded). But I was sorely tempted to write that the best info provided here is in the form of opinions - people regularly ask for opinions, e.g. about the best albums of the 90's, psychedelic albums, and get responses in the form of opinions.

    As Peter Rideout will now tell you, I'm ancient, so I've heard and read many negative comments about the music I really like - for instance, to those who say "I don't like jazz", I have had three responses;

    a) "you'll grew up one day" - which I long dropped

    b) "what particular form jazz don't you like then" - which I still use occasionally, to remind those people that they only probably heard trad jazz played badly in a pub

    c) "Oh never mind" - life is too short to argue and to explain.  Who knows if they might later discover for themselves the errors of their ways. With Radiohead I will persist, because I find their work interesting and innovative. Besides if we all liked the same things and didn't "debate" on occasion, wouldn't life be limited and boring?

In that case, I choose #3 - I agree absolutely and entirely with your response, which I feel is totally valid and a very lucid explanation of the intricacies of the style in question - why anyone should think otherwise is quite beyond me, holding, as I do, a Brownie badge in Jaw-Harp playing.

I hereby fully reject any suggestions which have anything to do with bodily functions and transport.

Italian Soundtracks; Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, Ennio Moriconne etc!

ECM, MPS, Blue Note, Soul Note, Black Saint (Jazz is good....a very difficult genre to categorize) and much, much more. George Duke to Henry Mancini! Miles Davis to Art Blakey! Terje Rypdal to Jean Luc Ponty! I could go on and on.

Bands like The Skids, Magazine, The Pixies, Pain of Salvation, Mr. Bungle, Todd Rundgren, Gino Vanelli, Kyuss, Fu Manchu! I could go on and on.

Got about 2,000 original CDs and 1000 LPs (left over after I sold most of my LPs, when CDs first came out like an idiot). Jazz, Classical, Electronic, Prog, RIO, Jazz/rock, Fusion, Stoner rock, metal, punk......NO RAP!

Hey Swalter! Welcome to the progarchives forums! I'm actually (somewhat) pretty new here too, and I'm from Oklahoma, and I'm 15 years old.

Now we'll need your info. Give it up!

(and just as a warning, you better change your avatar from the candle flame. there's this old guy named Peter Rideout on these forums who has the same one, and we don't want any confusion. earlier this month a new guy had the same avatar as Rideout, and he changed his now (by the way, the "new guy" aforementioned is Prog Rocker...) so change it before Rideout catches you!)

Beware the one with the crimson flame, he likes to be the only of his kind!

Post Rock/Indie - Tortoise, Godspeed, Mogwai

    Metal - Pantera, Slayer

Jazz - Miles Davis, Weather Report

I'm planning on exploring more genres too. I listen to so much progressive rock though.
