1. its hard to name a prog metal band he hasnt had involvment with. 2. DT almost singlehandedly brouht back prog in the 90's 3.There is a reason Modern Drumer named him drummer of the year last year. 4. Watch live in tokyo and tell me he isnt legendary. |

DT's a seminal prog metal band, sure, but they're hardly the only important prog metal act and even less so the only important 90s' prog rock act. Sure, they're quite popular, but it's not really about that, prog will only die when it has nothing more to say, not when practically no one listens to it. It never really died, even in the 80s', it just went off the map, but kept putting out great stuff, not only neo-prog. So no, DT has probably gained prog lots of new fans (myself included), but, on the whole, they're a very controversial band, with lots of harsh critics among fans of other 90s' prog bands and members of these bands themselves. Portnoy definitely deserves more recognition for his work, but there are hundreds of drummers who do... check this site out, if you don't know it already: http://www.drummerworld.com - http://www.drummerworld.com There's so much mindblowing drum stuff there it's scary. There are so many drummers who can out play portnoy its not even funny.
I have alot of respect for the work he did with dream theater - but so
many people think he's some kind of "technical god" just because he
plays a bunch of odd time signatures. I can name at least 20 drummers
who could play circles around him off the top of my head. -------------

| Well, I voted Neil because I think he truly is the best rock drummer around. However, you forgot some greats like Phil Collins (second best drummer), Bill Bruford, Portnoy, Pip Pyle and so on. Not surprisingly, I would not include Keith Moon or John Bonham as among the great drummers. I think their reputation is overblown. |

Out of those 3 pretty easy decision. Although Zeppelin was always my favorite band, I pick the legendary Neil Peart. Yep, Moon was unique, and lots of fun to watch, but somewhat technically sloppy, I think (Bruford -- my fave -- reputedly said of Moon: "He just hits things"). So, of those listed, Peart, easily (not that Bonham wasn't a powerhouse). Yes, Stewart (sp) Copeland was -- I presume still is -- very good. Have you seen the Police - Synchronicity Tour DVD? I recently bought it, and it's quite good. Copeland is great & very fast on it. An under-appreciated rock drummer, for sure!

I'm between Bonham and Moon..... Bonham also is a drum legend.... His playing was more than progressive (meaning not the type of music of course)...hmmmmm... my vote goes to Keith Moon.... Probably at another time I would have voted John.. -------------

Sorry just sounds funny.... If we judged drummers from a recorded solo the winner would be Peart for me with the "O baterista" from Rock In Rio but Peart is my least favourite from those three... I know that he is technically amazing and yes he has been through realy terrible situations.... What I don't like about him is that he prepares very carefully his solos and drum parts and doesnt really play what he feels at the moment something that the crazy keith moon had. His drumming is amazing. Its so real.... so alive for me.....Posted By: gaita

Keith moon. He is easily the most powerful drummer on the list. He has an amazing talent of hitting the drums in a seemingly random pattern yet keeping the beat. He perpetually sounds like he's showing off, fitting in perfectly with the Who's incredably excessive sound. It's close, though. John bonham is pretty beastly. I don't get much out of Neil Peart's drumming. -------------   |

NEIL! and what is all this talk of portnoi? what he plays is good, sure, and it realy goes with dream theater, but he makes it sound a lot harder than it is by having a LOT of drums. add to that the fact he cant play any rudiments at all (his own admission in modern drummer mag) a question about drums and NO MENTION of Billy Cobham!? the playing of moon is unlike anything i have ever heard. just the pure power and randomness. bonham is amazing also. he is lightning fast with the footpedel and mobydick live is just makes you say wow. and pearrt is a genious too. He is very technical. they are all good but i think pert is over al better. ------------- true as a lobster in a pteredaktyl's underpants.

I don't think they're the elite, I think if you're looking for the very best then in terms of prog - although POeart will come highly rated - Bruford's the main man. Of the three, I voted for Keith Moon, greatly under-rated as a drummer, then Bonham, then Neil Peart who is clearly a bloody good drummer, but I find it hard to warm to him. Hey two out of three in your poll are sadly deceased, hopefully this doesn't worry Neil if he's reading this! |

As far as rock is concerned I think Neil Peart is the best. Der Trommler from R30 is INCREDIBLE Jazz drumming needs more technical ability tho and buddy rich is best ever. Bonham is an incredible drummer and is right behind peart. Moby Dick is a great solo and he was perfect for Zeppelins sound. Kieth moon is technically way overrated but he did invent the "lead drummer" |

Well, I'll choose Neil Peart for Prog Drummer.. He is a legend technically and expressively.. I love MIke portnoy's Concept in structuring his drum part of songs... I can feel more emotion than Neil, just that he didn't reach the technical ability, so which is quite sad... Phil Collins, I pretty think he is quite overrated.. I dun see he is that good in my OPINION.. lol For other drummer wise, I like Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Nathenial Townsley, Dennis Chamber, Tony Royster JR and of course, CARTER BEAUFORD! =) Z' ------------- <<Dark side of Z' Drummination>> |

This isn't going to be the most accurate poll, considering Neil Peart is the only one of those 3 drummers that was actually in a prog band...
