i've played in a prog rock/metal band for several years(butterfly pie), first on vocals, later on on the synths.

currently i'm playing synthesizer in a kind of NU-meatl band...just started off, we are developing ;)

i'm curious, are there more musicians among us?

I used to front a Genesis/Yes cover band called "Frost."  Way back in the late 70s, early 80s.  It was the most fun I've ever had as a performer.  We did lots of Genesis (from Can Utility to Squonk to Down and Out), and Yes (including all of Close to the Edge).  Also some Gabriel (D.I.Y., On The Air), Crimson (Larks Tongues), U.K. (Nothing to Lose), Asia (Heat of the Moment).

I currently front (don't laugh, please) an Elton John tribute band that is very hot in the NYC market.  Called "Rocket Men," we do a one-hour tribute of EJ's greatest, plus some obscure ones.  I sometimes do the shows in the kind of full regalia he was known for in the 70s- wild outfits, top hat, crazy glasses, glitzy rings, feather boas, high-heeled platform shoes, etc.  It's great fun.  (I hope this won't get me kicked off a prog site!!  )

Anyway, I've been a performing musician since my single digits, and have always done something musical.

Peace.

I'd love to hear John McLaughlin and Holdsworth trade 24 bars.......... I'm not so sure JM is better than AH...could be a draw.

Aren't there quite a few threads out there debating this very topic?

Long live Allan Holdsworth and John Mclaughlin!!!

Maani, I for one think it's very cool that you front an E.J. tribute band. I wish I had the guts (or the talent) to try something like that -- good on you! Clap

Perhaps a song like "Rocket Man" (ever heard the beautiful Kate Bush version?) could qualify as "Progressive Pop," as could maybe the entire "Madman Across the Water" LP. (Love those anachronisms....)

Wishing you continued success,

Peter

Thumbs Up You're both right of course, Danbo and Jim.  Holdsworth and Mclaughlin are both awesome! I know Holdsworth best from his work with UK, Bruford, and Jean Luc Ponty's '77 fusion masterpiece, "Enigmatic Ocean." A true axesmith. What are Holdsworth's newer solo works like, Danbo? Jazz fusion or what?

JIM, liked your "Uriah Creep" joke. Good one!LOL Here are two questions for you   (but I'll answer the first one myself):

Q1: What's longhaired, brown, and sits steaming on a Hammond stool?

A: Uriah's Heap! Dead

Q2: Who was (the "real") Uriah Heep?

didnt he appear in one of Dckins novels i am thinking David Copperfield but am not sure i liked a Tale of Two Cities "tis a far far better rest i go to" etc(sidney Carlton in one of the great speeches in literature) but am no expert, am i right?

Posted By: Peter
Date Posted: February 04 2004 at 08:46

Clap Right again, Dude. Heep was a loathsome, tall, thin, red-haired villain ("like a malevolent baboon") in Dickens' masterpiece David Copperfield. He is often likened to an eel or fish: "He writhed and undulated about.... and gave himself a jerk, like a convulsive fish," ".....he was squeezing my hand with his damp fishy fingers." Heep usually describes himself as being only "very 'umble" -- hence the name of the first Uriah Heep album, "VERY 'EAVY, VERY 'UMBLE." A quite memorable character, and a pretty good 70s "prog metal" band. Love their song "The Wizard." Very Tolkien-esque!

Yes, A Tale of Two Cities is a great novel. I also highly recommend David Copperfield (if 950-page Victorian novels don't put you off) and (the much shorter) Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Great reading with some choice instrumental music in the background. The BBC productions of Dickens' works (and Victorian novels in general) are also top-notch. Smile

PS: Do you live in my past, or my future, down there in Oz?

Allan Holdsworth's newer stuff is in the Jazz vein, however, he is his own genre. Check out "All Night Wrong" incredible soloing LIVE.

He's also involved in some newer prog bands, Atlantis and K-2

Jim: kudos on your "gom jabbar" reference!

Peter: If any of EJ's material is "prog," it would have to be some of the later stuff, especially some of the stuff on GYBR (esp. Funeral for a Friend) and Capt. Fantastic.  Still, the early albums had lots of non-standard instruments (to say nothing of keyboards and strings), and songs like "Madman" and "Mission" do have some "progressive sensibilities."

Good call.

Peace.

Mr Rideout - Uriah's Heap?!? puleeeze ; in answer to your later question, I think Australians live in our days of future past.

Dude - naughty man - the Uriah Heep question was aimed at ME ME ME; I wanted to look cool & literary by knowing who Uriah Heep is, No FAIR (sounds of toys being thrown from prams etc etc) - I'm now going to sulk & listen to my Mahavishnu Orchestra albums

"Jean Luc Ponty's '77 fusion masterpiece, "Enigmatic Ocean."

I have that one, got in on disc because it's just so damn tasy, lots of great interplay between Holdsworth and Stuermer (sp?). I have on cd now recordings me and the guys did as 'Agatha Soup' twenty years ago; I played bass guitar for quite a while, never professionally though (bit of stagefright, always played better by myself). My friend, the improvisational lead vocalist, transferred them recordings from cassette to disc, which did take quite a while. Among the largely improvisational ramblings there are covers of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood and Mary Had a Little Lamb, and poor little Mary takes quite a bit of abuse in the lyrics.

I am the vocalist and second guitarist in an original prog band. The music is melodic hard rock with funk and jazz overtones. The lyrics I have written are never blatant and are always poetic, keeping in the with the tradition and sublime nature of prog.

Can I get partial cred for doing sound and lights, and humping the PA and drum kit for 5 years?

OK, not exactly prog either, it was a jazz-rock/fusion band that had to do top 40 covers to survive.

I use to play in a Band in my early 20s.

I still have all my keyboard gear but I haven't played in a band for years now.

We use to play some Genesis ,Yes ,Supertramp,& classic rock stuff .

-We wern't pros but did all right.

I'd like to have a band today but the problem is:

-Trying to fing guys around my age

-who want to do prog&Rock

-who still don't dream of being "Rock Stars"

-who still have their equipement

-and whose wives would let them out to play.

Not as easy as it sounds to have a band in your late 30s

we would never dare call ourselves a band and disturb our reputation as avant-garde "artistes," but I helped found a "collective: devoted to improvisation in light and sound in Minneapolis, called sensor re:engine.  the senses regard the engine, the engine re:engineers the senses.  armed with an enormous array of computers, synthesizers, ethnic percussion and woodwinds, and toy laser pistols, we try to raise human consciousness to the seventh sphere of heaven.

everything is improvised, even lyrics, and everything we've ever recorded is free in high resolution mp3 at http://www.waste.org/sensor - www.waste.org/sensor

Sounds like you need to see 2 bands, both of whom I know tour extensively in Europe:

The Grand Mothers - a collection of various ex Zappa musicians fronted by Napoleon Murphy Brock, who perform '70's era Zappa.

The Muffin Men - a group from Liverpool who perform a cross section of Zappa material & who are more often than not fronted by Jimmy Carl Black

I used to play in few jazz-rock bands but the closest Icame to playing in a "prog" band is when I filled in for a few gigs with a Black Sabbath cover band. They had a female vocalist who did a pretty good Ozzy and she was just about as f**** up. This was years ago and all I really remember is being extremely wasted at the end of each gig.

There is: http://www.geocities.com/owlsounds/owlsamples.html - www.geocities.com/owlsounds/owlsamples.html

I also played in a band called Tony Island (as a bassist) that was a wacked mix of funk, biting Zappa-esque satire, early Yes and a dose of the blues. The instrumentation was

Tony Island: Keys, vocals, woodwinds

Tom Scotto: Drums, Percussion

and little 'ol me on bass plus a few Special Guest Villains, 'er we mean musicians.

http://www.tonyisland.com - www.tonyisland.com

We managed to get a CD out before quetly dissolving (Tony relocated to upstate NY). It was great while it lasted though, the gigs were fun and we dropped some jaws.

I've downloaded six samples, and they're very short, but and it sounds interesting!  Melodical and a bit jazzy instrumental prog. Lot of improvisation.

Although I don't know much about guitars, I can hear on the sample of "The Journey Begins" that you can play very well!

right now I'm also in the band of a "theatrical company" (is that correct?), we used to perform "The Rocky Horror Show", it was great fun, now we're rehearsing for JCS, and I can't wait to get on stage.....

I used to be the lead singer and keyboard player in a band called The Mistake Museum
We did a lot of cover work (Elton John, The Beatles, Genesis, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson) plus a good deal of self-written material.

The group started as a trio, then developed into a foursome...then another foursome and then to the only two members which persisted through all revolving door process: the drum player and me!

We haven't performed much live...but we recorded a lot on a 8-tracks analog recorder!
Now I have gone solo and I record digitally on my home PC.

Currently we get on stage as a piano and voice act only, as entertainment for the guests in our restaurant. Sometimes I play some congas too in the restaurant; real drums would be too loud.

I play guitar in a melodic death metal band  Not very prog, but we're damn good at melodic death metal

I would like to start up my own band sometime in the future and just play stuff i compose. Kind of a solo project i guess. My writing is not even close to death metal. Some metal moments, but i'm getting more and more jazzy. Haven't really settled into any style yet, but it seems a lot of stuff i write just has a really odd feeling to it. Strange chords and odd textural combinations.

I play the bass and keyboards in my rockin' band Oddball ( http://www.freewebs.com/oddballslp - www.freewebs.com/oddballslp ).  I also play the guitar and drums when the drummer and guitarist aren't present.  We're not prog (yet!), we play Weezer (), Led Zeppelin (), Black Sabbath (), some crappy emo (), some crappy punk (), some of our originals (), and some other stuff.  However, I am slowly and subliminally prog-imificating the band, so...  But shhh, don't tell the other guys!

^ Looks promising!

You have a good strategy in prog-imification, try to do it discreetly.  Slowly get rid out of the punk material, emphasize BLACK SABBATH and mostly your own compositions!

hey-  i was passing through, looking at the artist list for a Aural Moon tribute cd

i'm helping to put together. more on that later.

--------------------------------------

zenpool is the umbrella name i use for my projects.

so i don't have to type a big page, or sound like i'm full of myself,

anyone that's interested, please do a google search.

short story- we're in rotation at all the PRRN stations, made the

460 member station Rradionetwork's top 10 "world" chart w/ our latest

tune "majiker". we've had plays on the gagliarchives, the cd's been featured in full

on Aural moon, progpositivity, and soon to be on stellar attractions.

the cd's available at cdbaby, toweronline, downloadable from itunes

and the rest of the lot. some of the tunes are more prog-ish than the early solo pieces,

which are electronic/newage(y) ala vangelis.

I play guitar and viola, but the only band I've played in has two constant members (I'm one of them).  We can't find a friggin' drummer, and I just went off to college.  But I'm trying to form a prog band (although I'm probably not good enough yet).

Well, nothing really special right now. I can hardly find anyone that matches my musical ambition, but well, I have hope. I will probably play some québécois folk music (on violin, of course) with friends, but nothing too special right now.

Though recently I might start a project a la Fly Pan Am with two friends. I'd play drums, ut also try to extract the worst sounds you'd ever hear out of a violin...

I'm in a band that has  a sound like a mixture of classic rock, a tiny bit of prog( althouhg this influence is increasing) some punk, grunge, and a ltittle metal and ambience

Its good sh*t i'd say, but we are now writing stuff that's alot more proggy and that makes me happy!

Our name is distortion and i play guitar and back up vocals

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

COOL!  I play violin with Philly-area spacerock band Scattered Planets.  It's a very part-time band.. we just wing it at shows!    I have also toured with Nik Turner/Spaceseed and am in the middle of touring with Harvey Bainbridge/Spaceseed this week..  I just recorded my first solo electric violin CD (I can post the CD Baby link if you'd like to hear the samples).

Well, i dont work with music full time

i play in two bands, one of them plays classic rock, purple, zeppelin, Floyd, Rush, Nazareth, Bob Dylan and whatever comes that way

the other one is a Progressive rock band, in this one im even more perfectionist, playing shows with metronome so we can be in sync with DVDs i produce to match the playing (you guess should see we playing Echoes, by Floyd, in the end its a big jam, so it was kinda tricky to do the screen behind, but random images and psychedelic accelerated images worked BEAUTIFULLY)

both of them writes their own music, and the classic rock one is where i get the money for my equipment, since the prog rock one is not so public friendly hehehehe

i also produce a load of beggining bands (mostly emocore ones who wants to have a good guy representing them, tough none of them are getting far, im just ripping them off hehehehehe ) and stuff like that

quite a load of work for a 18 year old hehehehehe

I play piano and guitar. I was in a band, but quit it because they only wanted to cover bullsh*t songs like 'Seven Nation Army' and 'Starcrossed'. It was a good choice because they now are really worthless, and weren't allowed to the school's Battle of the Bands.

I'm starting a prog-ish band with the old drummer, but I'll unfortunatly have to throw some pop-covers and metal elements through it because the dumbass idiots at the school wouldn't recognise good music even if it made sweet love to them (like it does to me).

There's also this raggae-grunge band that I'm gonna play in, I'm good friends with the band leader/lead guitarist, and also live close to him. This is important 'cos I totally dig his younger sister.

Something unserious called 'De Galschreeuwracers.'[Trancelated: The Galscreamracers.]

The band consits of nothing but a drummer and a keyboarder/vocallist[Myself] and we're making a blackmetal subgenre we very HIMishly made our own called 'spockmetal',

What we basically do is cover internet animations like Magical Trevor, and The Llama song in a blackmetal way.

With only a drummer and a keyboarder.

I'm also in an experimental ambient trance project called Stasis

And I produce independantly under the name Xiaoj, more experimental metal and ambient and some techtrance and classical.

I play in a small band since a few weeks, playing synth. We don't play prog though, just rock / blues / reggae / gospel, since I'm the only prog lover in the band. It's nice though, and we've only just started.

I play in a band called http://www.aenigmaband.com - Ænigma , we're from Italy. Our genre is hard to classify, let's say a progressive-thrash metal experiment... If you're curious our demo is downloadable from our website http://www.aenigmaband.com - www.aenigmaband.com

See thread on Malaysian prog-rock ... also in Music and Musician Exchange ... that's me on lead vocals and keyboards ... for my former band Samarkand (a prog band that had a Top 10 hit!)

I now play bass in a folk-rock group called Mojo Pin ... fingers crossed that the album's ready next year
