(Shouldn't this be in the Tech Talk forum?)

The MP3 standard does not support gapless playback by nature (unless you rip an album as one long single MP3 file) but apparently the LAME MP3 encoder enables MP3 files to be ripped so that firmware in some models of players can remove the gaps: for example, see the following thread for information on how the open source Rockbox firmware plus LAME encoder can be used to create gapless playback of MP3 files on iRiver H1xx players:

http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=31543&highlight=gapless - http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=31543&highli ght=gapless

Oh, and by the way, unlike MP3, the Ogg Vorbis standard does support gapless tracks inherently. If you've got an MP3 player that supports it as well as MP3, then ripping to OGG i.s.o. MP3 is one answer.

The Rio Karma is the only player ever designed to do this. I've had one for a couple of years, and can verify that it plays MP3s, OGG and FLAC gaplessly. Unfortuantly, Rio ceased to exist in the summer, though the players can still be found for sale online. I'm too tired to describe it right now, but the forums at http://www.riovolution.com/ contain everything you need to know.

Yeh, if you breakout the toolbox and rubber gloves:

Never tried it, though. And note the caveats about playing the result on an iPod (just above "FAQs" at the bottom of the article).

The following (somewhat dated) detailed article explains about gapless playback problems with MP3, and explains some of the theory behind the various codecs:

Note his comments about Ogg Vorbis! Obviously a Prog fan.

EDIT: BTW, it also mentions the Rio Karma. But, if you are prepared to breakout the rubber gloves, rockbox will give gapless on an iRiver iH1xx if used with the aforementioned LAME MP3 encoder:

iAudio supports it natively even for MP3, if I recall correctly
