I'm really getting into The Tri-Tone Fascination. This guy is an awe inspiring musician. If you don't know who he is, find out and soon! I saw him do a guitar clinic about 1993 and got an autographed photo.. It was jawdropping.

Yes, I've been getting into Shawn Lane as well. I love the Paris DVD. I've also become just as enamored of his partner Jonas Hellborg - his new CD Kali's Son is awesome. |

No other responses? What's up with that? C'mon, Shawn Lane was an amazing musician! In addition to what I already mentioned, I love Abstract Logic with Jonas Hellborg and Kofi Baker, as well as Two Doors with Michael Shrieve and Jonas Hellborg. I must say, however, that I only like the first half of Two Doors - the tracks with Shawn Lane - I find the second half, with Bill Frisell to be very dissapointing. |

I only have some instructional videos from this guy but I haven't hears any of his recorded work . I knew he passed away recently, do you know exactly how or why?

I live in the Memphis area. I saw Shawn perform with his old band, "The Willys" a few years back. On cassette, I have his album, "The Powers of Ten". He was incredible. ------------- - Greg |

I believe he passed away from respiratory failure during an illness - he was quite overweight and a smoker. I highly recommend that you check out his work, he was an amazing guitarist and pianist. The bulk of his work is fusion and toward the end he delved into eastern influences. His DVD Paris is some of the best Raga Rock I've ever heard. He worked with a wonderfull bass player named Jonas Hellborg whose work you should also look for. |

Come on put some reviews up in the Jonas Hellborg section, of Kali's Son and Abstract Logic!!!! The 'second half' of Two Doors (please note by musicians who had been associated with John Zorn - Horwitz and Frisell) was the left overs from Shrieve's excellent and haunting recording Fascination (CMP Records) - avantgarde jazz rock??? |

Ah so that's what this site calls raga rock - I much prefer the proper name of the genre which most people use: Indo jazz fusion a term which has been round since the early 60's, especially when rock doen't come into the music. |

I would never question the musicianship of Horwitz or Frisell. I simply prefer the tracks with Shawn Lane- they are very different from the tracks with Bill Frisell and more to my liking. I have never heard Fascination, I will have to give it a listen, I'm sure it is excellent. I saw the term Raga Rock somewhere on this site and I found it amusing, it was not my intention to be misleading in any way. Regarding reviews, I suppose it is about time I got 'round to contributing some. Thanks for suggestiong it. |
