Well.....You know that the highest ambition of prog musicians is to compose an epic ("the epichest") track.....I want to know which you prefer......I love all of these.....but my favorite is 2112 by Rush!

I'm sure I forgot someone.....Remind me what!

also... "Karn Evil 9" - ELP
and "Thick as a Brick" - Jethro Tull - can be classified under both concept album and epic

Thick as a Brick is one big song... it also happens to take up an entire album, but that doesn't change its status.

And just because you don't like KE9 doesn't mean the rest of us don't...

From those Close to the edge, because it manages to keep a theme and a mood through 18 minutes; but form the ultimate epic is Echoes.

Symphony X - Divine Wings of Tragedy

But since that one isn't on the list, I voted Genesis - Supper's Ready

-------------
RIO/AVANT/ZEUHL - The best thing you can get with yer pants on!

Heh, yeah, I'm one of the few people who really likes that song.

Some other notable missing pieces from the poll are Cassandra Geminni (which would have been my vote), Gates of Delirium (which would have been my runner up), Tarkus, and all of the 20 minute + songs from Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings.

though.

I'd say Octavarium by Dream Theater. It has a nice build-up, with a very bombastic, orchestrated, and soulful end that sums up everything that happened before in the song... a great piece.

I haven't heard the Banco, so out of those it's the Genesis. But one of the TMV ones would probably win if they were on it. Also Starless, despite not being all that long, manages to cram more epicness into 12 minutes than most people do in twenty

I just had to vote for Rush tonight!!!!!

Some of those are amongst the worst epics out there but CLOSE TO THE EDGE would always get my vote as the best ever.

I'm gonna depart from form here & vote for TransAtlantic.

Another one of those "Which of these is best" sort of things where all the choices are correct.

It's not Book 11,it's Book II,and why shouldn't Cygnus X-1 Book II be in a greatest epics poll?

It's a great epic track(nearly 20 minutes)taking up one whole side of Hemispheres.Plus it's a great tune.

I agree, someone brought up The Fountain of Lamneth, that is what i belive to be the best epic Rush has ever done, and its always overlooked. I suggest listening to it if you have not heard it, its a  goodin'.

I LOVE 'Close to the edge' but for me 'Suppers ready' is simply a better song, its final section is the end that inspired most of the epics out there now.

i think the epic of the epics is mike oldfield's AMAROK!

The gates of delirium is the best epic imho .

At 20 minutes it is not dragged out like close to the edge nor is it bits and pieces thrown together like Supper's ready.

One might call the 2nd side of Steve Hillage's "Green" an epic too, named "Om Rock", although it is divided into 6 different tracks. The 6 tracks are played as one piece of music. The same is true for the 2nd side of Gong's "You", except for the first track of it, "Perfect Mystery"". Still it leaves an epic of 21:45 minutes, consisting of the two tracks "Isle of Everywhere" and "You never Blow yr Trip forever", that are played as one piece of music.
