I'd love to hear your opinions on these twoamazing bands. Choices
sholud be based on atmosphere throughout their albums lyrics
songwriting skill and obviously the overall quality of the music.

Yeah that is what i expected although i thoroughly enjoy the work of
Genesis they do not have the whole package like Floyd. Although they
make good music their lyrics do not touch the timeless and universal
quality of Waters especially during Floyds untouchable phase
during the reign of Dark Side, Animals and Wish You Were Here.

I bet then that you have never heard 'Harold the Barrell'? It's about a man commiting suicide! That's kind of universal... Unfortunately
And I wonder, Do you think Waters lyrics are better just because they are very serious??

No its just they are less pretentious and unnecessary althogh funny the
lyrics "A flower" arent really necessary or meaningful. Floyd also have
this cold isolated atmosphere on their records which is so beautiful
and haunting but cold enough still to not go into that dangerous soppy
place. Floyd keep their dignity and im not saying Genesis do not have
aome of these things all i'm saying is Floyd has the whole package and
will still be necessary in one hundred years but im not sure bout
Genesis

I think Pink Floyd were a lot more pretentious (and unecessary) than Genesis, Have you heard 'Ummagumma'?? or 'Atom Heart Mother'? or even 'A Saucerful...'? That was being pretentious
It also took Pink Floyd a long time to get their act together..

When Floyd did get their act together they held it longer and never
brought out a pop album! And Floyd at their best were untouchable.

genesis dont depress the hell out of me, so i can listen to them
whenever i please, but pink floyd, if i put dark side of the moon on,
im depressed for the rest of the day and in a pissy mood. sure they
convey emotion, but id rather get tinglies in my body by peter gabriels
lyrics then depressed by roger waters depressing lyrics

I know a lot of people like Pink Floyd, and have high reverance for them, but I've never been able to get into their stuff like with Genesis.
Genesis' material tends to be brighter and more positive and spiritual, while Pink Floyd seems to be darker, colder, and weirder.
|

It depends on your outlook on Floyds albums like Darkside is about the
troubles and strains of life but Roger relates to us in that and
eclipse is all about all of us having those feelings and thats its not
so bad cause we are together in that ship. Sometimes i find Gabriels
lyrics a bit nonsensical too

This is a tough choice. I think overall I'll vote for Floyd...but only just....both at their peak were excellent but I think I prefer certain Floyd albums (eg Animals) to even the best Genesis had to offer.
And then there is the downside, did either of these bands ever sell out, well even if the quality of Floyd's albums did drop, it never got as bad as some of the Genesis canon....
|
Posted By: linchpinc

never as bad as some of the genesis albums. Animals is a brilliant

Not much difference in my opinion. Dark Side of the Moon is better than anything Genesis put out but then Genesis have about 7 really good albums whereas Floyd drop away after Wish You were Here and Meddle.
I get more nauseated by Roger Waters " me the hero against a world that sucks" than Phil Collins pop pretensions.Pink Floyd may have been saved if Roger had only taken his medication.
I prefer Gabriel's lyrics to Waters much more thought provoking and intrigueing.

I thought for a long time, Overall I much prefer listening to Genesis because I find them easier to listen to, And I think that Pink Floyd albums like 'The Wall' and 'The Final Cut' are too dark for me sometimes, The music just feels too claustrophobic. Musically (In general) however I feel they are equal, They both made extremely important contributions to progressive music. My favourites are 'Animals' and 'Foxtrot'

"If you think that it's pretentious you've been taken for a ride" Gabriel in It
from LLDOB.
You have been taken for a ride. Gabriels lyrics are incredible. The "a
flower" isn't necessary or meaningful? What do you know about the story
of narcisus? It is very meaningful once you learn about the old story. In
fact Genesis' lyrics during the Gabriel days were NEVER unmeaningful.
They used dark humor a lot but that was not meant to take away from the
meaning and importance of the songs at all. It only intensified them.

harsh (tough harsh it was) and my record collection fetures more albums

Genesis' decade of greatness from '70 to '80 is hands down the greatest
era of any band ever. You just can't get any better than songs like
'Dancing With The Moonlit Knight' 'Firth of Fifth' or 'The Cinema
Show'. Gabriel's voice and lyrics are so perfect, though Gilmore and
Waters had fine voices as well. Both are great bands but Genesis just
does so much more for me.

on a musical scale of things Floyd don`t come anywhere near what genesis reached back in the gabriel era .. I see floyd as poor mans prog .. pretend prog if you will a glorified blues band pretending to be prog (progressive rock demands blistering keyboard solos and time signatures that confuse the hell out of you but sound great !) Floyd are too basic far too simple so I voted for genesis but I`ll have to ignore the collins influence with the vocals in the later years

Pink Floyd for me. I have nothing against genesis or anything, but im
just not into that symphonic stuff at all. Im not really in to any of
the classic prog acts that are listed as "symphonic", that may surprice
some people and maybe some people think that i dont really like prog at
all because its those bands that sort of "created" the genre prog. And
what do I know, maybe their right.
But im just more into psychedelic, avant-garde and jazzy stuff. I never
get symphonic stuff, its to dull for me, it doesn't speak to me really.
Im sure alot of the syphonic bands were more skillfull musicians then
floyd and anything, but I cant help it, im just more intriged by
"psychedelic" sounds.

Floyd by far. I'm getting more into Genesis, but what I've heard can't compare with Animals or WYWH at all. For one thing, WYWH is eargasmic; the experience of the third and fourth time I listened to the high guitar solo on SOYCD pt. 2 has never been duplicated by any other music I've ever heard.
Not all of Floyd's lyrics are depressing; on DSOTM the only song that is really depressing is Time. I think Waters' lyrics are better; he writes lyrics which are powerful and sound great without having insane allusions and puns like Gabriel seems to enjoy so much. Waters is serious most of the time, but not always depressing. I don't like his post-Animals work all that much anyway; it's too whiny.

Not much of a contest. I love PF but their stuff is pretty straightforward, and let's face it, I could play the drums in that band. Not that DSotM, WYWH and Animals aren't top-notch records that people will be listening to in a thousand years (and enjoyng the mind-altering substances of the future to as well). Without a doubt they are one of the greatest rock bands that have ever been and will ever be, for that matter.
But the G (up through Wind and Wuthering, anyway) have such stylistic diversity, amazing multipartite songwriting, such dazzling musicianship and craft behind them. Gabe's theatrical touches (up to '75), so legendary that cover bands who put on verbatim presentations of their early tours sell out 5,000 seat venues... cover bands! All in all the G are just more unique and take more risks than PF. That's why I picked them.

Hey nobody, ever contemplated founding a new faith based not on merit
or karmic debt or penance or salvation, but instead on passion itself? Why
one believes takes a backseat to how purely they beleive it. In this sense,
we might make strapping priests of this high passion latterday
syncretism.
Walk a tight rope, Floydy....I love you, but are you acrobatic, are you
bending your mind into the reverse and future directions of time? Floyd
have such an endearing, relaxing, purely powerful sound. Yet their quality
is ultimately so constrained to the 70s. They were (even more then
Zeppelin to me) THE 70s band. Not to say it doesnt come off timeless or
wont be enjoyed for time immemorial (until the Apes rise up and outlaw
the labor-distracting folly of melodies.) They may be infinite, but
infinitely harken to a certain cultural atmosphere.
Genesis, IMO of course, sound like they belong just as
much to the future: 'It', 'Silent Sorrow', 'Waiting Room', (not 'avante garde'
or 'outside' enough for you 'BitchBrew???) as they do to the middle ages
and rennaisance. Floyd are so wonderful, but always come off as a 'rock
band.' But in my heart and in my soul, Genesis are a myth, a symbol, an
adventure. When watching the Musical Box re-enact the Lamb at
Toronto's Massey Hall, I thought to myself, with all the visual madness
interspersed with such clarity and focus with sound yet so mad and
seemingly chaotic, this isnt JUST music. This is a story that tells itself and
comes from nothing and stems into my being.
Genesis Genesis Genesis. Again, I listen to Floyd constantly ('Burning
Bridges' anyone?). Guess I'm just confused as to why the 'classic rock'
contingent is coming out stronger then the 'syphonic progressive'
contingent on this one. But then again, Floyd gets destructive amounts of
Radio Play. Gabey Genesis does not. We just don't have as much of an
audience Then again, Thin Lizzy gets more love then Univers Zero.
It's like comparing a market square to a hall of mirrors.

Floyd better than Genesis? Gimme a break!!! The only guy in Floyd with any talent is David Gilmour, and while Waters sometimes wrote a good lyric, he can't play bass at all! So how can anyone believe he also wrote the guitar-solos. Also, remember those out-of-tune vocals during Live 8.
Genesis, on the other hand, was a band where all members had talent. Say what you want about Phil Collins' pop songs, but you cannot deny the fact that he is one of the best drummers of all time. Also, Tony Banks' keyboard parts are way interesting than Rick Wright's.
Don't get me wrong, I love Floyd (especially "Wish you were here"), but they're absolutely not such talented musicians as Genesis

No one would join my cult, dojo, because I'm not good looking enough and you know cult leaders always have to sleep with their disciples, whether they're the Maharishi Mahesh "Sexy Sadie" Yogi or Jim "White Nights" Jones.

Okay, I very rarely post here because sometimes it seems I ramble and
get myself in trouble. I just had to get in on this one
however...and yes I voted for genesis, who IMHO eclipsed anything Floyd
recorded...and they did it in 1971 with the release of "Nursery
Cryme." There is nothing boring about Genesis and to say that
Gabriel's lyrics were never thought provoking, or at least interesting,
is insanity, especially when comparing him to such a mediocre
songwriter as Waters. The unfortunate thing about Waters'
material is the constant need to be depressing and dark...and not
really in a good way, but more in a draggy, put me to sleep way!!!
I love Floyd...don't get me wrong, Animals, Meddle, Wish You Were
Here...all classics. The Wall and Dark Side put me to sleep in
minutes simply because of how overplayed they are. Since Genesis
has much more complicated and involved music, it keeps my
interest. While Floyd went terribly downhill after Final Cut,
Genesis, although mainstreaming a bit, still maintained a quality that
was missing from latter day Floyd. Phil Collins may have been a
pop icon in his own world, but for Genesis he STILL wrote some
thought-provoking music well into the final Genesis disc!!! This
is of course all in my opinion...all music is to be loved by
someone...no one is right and no one is wrong!!!!!!!

Genesis, although it's a tough choice.

Well, comparing these two great bands is like comparing pineapples and truffles. Pink Floyd has always been one of my favorite bands, but Genesis gets the number one spot for me.
I didn't like Dark Side Of The Moon when it first came out. I thought it was too blusey in comparison to the band's more psychedelic spatial realms of previous albums. Of course in time my opinions and feelings about the album changed in favor of it. Sonically it's a great album, one of the best.
I think my life changed the very first time I heard Watcher Of The Skies. The haunting theatrical piano intro to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway are prog milestones. I always felt Tony Banks had always been shoved behind Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. He's up there with them.
Then again, what other band produced a Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett?
In the beginning there was Genesis...

WOO! Genesis is probably the greatest prog band of all time but Pink Floyd is winning! Everyone's gone mad! WOO! Im an ANIMAL! Im gonna go rob some old women, consume vast amounts of drugs and alcohol, and then ... vote for Pink Floyd!
No no... I was just kidding about that last part... I'm not crazy... and... plus I already voted for Genesis hours ago.

The Floyd have a more monochromatic sound, thick; not a whole lot going on musically. But what they do they do very well, and it hardly ever becomes tiring to me. I think Genesis are (Were? I'm thinking in present tense here...) able to suggest a whole lot more, in terms of musicianship. And Genesis have some great moments recorded. I just feel that Genesis are/were (the days of Floyd and Genesis are long past I suppose) kind of inconsistant. I literally stopped listening to 80's Genesis once I turned ten.
In any case. My vote goes towards Pink Floyd.
First post by the way.
