It's very hard to narrow it down to five, but here goes:

- Karn Evil 9
- The Barbarian
- Pirates
- The Three Fates
- A Time and a Place

It'd probably change if I did it tomorrow though...

Tarkus is my fave, followed by The Endless Enigma, then KE9

....but that's only personal, and probably not too representative of ELP fans

...yes, it's beginning to appear so!

I don't consider myself to be an ELP authority, and I'm surprised that thus far, Snow Dog hasn't shown his paws in this thread...he's a MASSIVE fan!

Take A Pebble, Tarkus and KE9. ELP was very good with epics. ELP could have meant Epic Long Play

ELP really used the epic form to the max. Especially the contrast between Emerson's complex compositions and Lake's simple but beautiful songs is something I really like. Emerson had the talent and the technique to really turn an epic into something special.

my favorite band composed:

  1. Tarkus
  2. From the Beggining
  3. Trilogy
  4. KE 9
  5. The Endless Enigma
  6. Still...You Turn Me On

I just saw your profile Winter Wine and it states that you're only 16 years.

How comes such a young guy to be an ELP fan?

Well I also like that trio from your land, Therapy?

Tough one. Endless Enigma has always been my favourite, so that's easy. After that, things get a bit harder.

  1. Endless Enigma
  2. Karn Evil 9
  3. Aquatarkus (from "Welcome Back My Friends...")
  4. Trilogy
  5. The Sheriff or Hoedown, can't decide.

Lucky you, having a dad with a collection of prog. My sons don't know how lucky they are yet!

PS - I was into ELP when I was 13 or 14.

Karn Evil 9
Pirates
Tarkus
Toccata
Jerusalem

However, I only have BSS and Tarkus. I'm getting pics at a exhibition and trilogy on Christmas.

Pictures is not a song, it is a collection of "songs" or "pictures", so it doesnt matter how long you have been listening.

Anyway if you want to count it as one, thats your perogative I guess.

"wow.....I just realized my favorite works by them are all adapatations"

I have the same problem with ELP.  Now when I look back on them, my favorite tracks are Toccatta, Hoedown, Fanfare, the Barbarian, etc.   But I would have to say the Karnevil #9 is still a piece that acheived something lasting.  I particularly enjoy the Second Impression but find the third a bit silly with moments of briliiance.

When I saw ELP in 1998, I was not very impressed with them.  They really did not seem to enjoy playing together anymore; they lacked energy.  It was one of their last gigs together.  I would be nice to see them play together one more time.  I think a big part of it is Lake's ego;  there was a blurb on his website about him putting together the greatest band he ever played with.  Ironically, he was the one who was least successful outside of ELP.  He was really the leader of the band, though; he wrote the hits that popularized them and was the anchor.  He always seemed to be the odd man out, though.
