EXTREMELY tough.

I'm going to vote for "Fragile", just because "Roundabout" was the first prog song that I could get my current main squeeze to sit through.  It's slow but she's becoming "prog friendly".

Really, where could you go wrong voting for an album on this list?

"And You and I" is every nuance of Yes rolled up into one track. Siberian Khatru is my Fav. Close to the Edge, the tune, is the epic of all epics. Nuff said.

This poll could be narrowed down to Tales and Relayer...

Posted By: Dan Bobrowski
Date Posted: February 14 2004 at 18:17

ARRRGGG!!!!

Even Wakeman thought Tales was over the top. There are snatches of brilliance but totally an excerise in self-indulgence. You could trim Tales down to one solid LP.

Relayer, however, does contain some excellent ideas and refreshing interplay with Moraz and Howe.

Another tough one Gonghobbit; I could easily pick any of the first five in the list, but if I had to take only one Yes album to a desert island, it would probably be Fragile .

Or Close to the Edge. No, Relayer...................maybe Tales

Yessongs hands down no contest. Contains all the early masterpieces, including the excellent version of Prepetual change with the BB drum solo. Too bad he wasn't featured on the whole album.

Personally, I value my own opinion over Wakeman's!!  What a doof that guy is, he's 50% of WHY Tales is the best album ever made!  And he claims he doesn't like it!  I think his ego was just burned because the rest of the boys made him lay back and paint with beautiful colors, instead of shred the keys all the time like he does on CTTE...

... anyway, Moraz is a better soloist (SOUND CHASER!)

Big smile

Okay Corbet,

I'll agree that Maraz is an incredible performer, but I still think Tales is second to CTTE.

Have you heard the Moraz/Bruford discs? Stripped down and beautiful.

Posted By: corbet
Date Posted: February 16 2004 at 02:57

Danbo,

No I've never heard those discs! Funny you mention it, they are near the top of my to-purchase list, now I am really excited.  I'm glad to hear some praise, I know I will love them.

And, seriously, I can never fault anyone for picking CTTE as their favorite.  It is just too perfect a record to be argued with, I mean, that 1-2-3 punch.  So I understand where you are coming from.  Honestly, it's hard to go wrong with a band as good as Yes.

Inspired by this poll, I started a thread in the featured album section for Tales, so us Yes fans can really hash it out LOL.  Check it out if you want my detailed rambling on the subject.

People have not voted 90125 or Big Generator because they are among the weakest from the catalogue and the real Yes band includes Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe.

This is certainly regarded as one of the all time progressive rock classic albums, although not my favourite, there must be thousands who would pick this choice, a very very fine album.

I think CTTE isn't so deep and emotional as Fragile (that I voted). Fragile compiled ALL BEST of progressive rock sound. CTTE has some monotone moments and that's why It can be the best IMHO

I was just listening to Drama for the first time in 1,000,000 years and despite the big line-up change it cuts it! A lot more powerful than many Yes songs and Tempus Fugit sounds like it's going to go jazz fusion at times. I noticed it also got some favourable ratings in the archives' reviews.

DRAMA's not bad, Vibe, but (and i'm sure Maani will back me on this oneWink) CLOSE TO THE EDGE is a religious experience! (Especially with the right incense....) Front pew in the sacred  church of prog! I will brook no dissension! Dost thou want the happy prog godBig smile, or the vengefulAngry, mortal?

Music from another verdant, fertile green planet!

Yes Pete, a funny song but The Buggles in Yes (Drama), do you think it is credible and serious ?

Trevor Horn and Jeoff Downes were The Buggles but singing and playing keyboards for Yes is heretic

Could you imagine Frank Sinatra singing for Genesis ?

Why doesn`t anyone ever mention Time and a Word when Peter Banks was in the group. They actually still play a couple of these tracks during live performances (Sweet Dreams & No Opportunity....) Also What is Steve Howe doing on the cover of the North American release of this record? Anyone? I just bought a UK vinyl edition and hauled out my old North American one for comparison purposes and noticed this. Alan White is also pictured on the inner sleeve of Yesterdays yet he is not featured on any of the tracks. I bought this album back in 1976 because it had the track America which was not previously available.

Basically, Peter Banks was out when the album was released and Steve Howe was now "IN". Same goes with Yesterdays, when it was released Bruford "out" White "in".

Politics and legalities.

Every Album listed here I love. Overall, though, I would have to say TFTO is my absolute favorite.  I did notice when I bought the Rhino reissue over Christmas that the introduction to "Revealing Science of God" had been extended.  I have been wondering why they took it out of the original LP.  I also enjoyed the "Studio Run-throughs" on Disc 2. It gives a good sense of the guys just playing in the studio. All in all, I have all the Rhino reissues except "Tormato" and "Drama".

i was lucky enough to hear fragile and close to the edge in a row, so i experienced the evolution of the band, and the understanding why close to the edge is a masterpiece... and the last of that line-up, i like Alan White, he is solid and a good performer, but Bill Bruford is a better drummer

Yes you are right....Open Your Eyes is pretty bad. I tend to play the old classics or The Ladder more than Big Generator and Open Your Eyes now.

All true, but the proof's there for the hearing. Drama is a far better effort than 90125, which was the album which made me foresake my once favourite band. After I heard "Owner of a Lonley Heart" I didn't reach for a Yes LP for a long time. I saw them on the 9012live tour but that was only because I'd bought the ticket already. It was DIRE!!

Rabin's inclusion is twice the herecy in my book!

Chris Squire's "Fish Out Of Water" is one of Yes' best albums.   I'm sure it would be above, say, Fragile on my top 10 Yes list.

of course...

Tales and Relayer are the king of music.

Uh-huh ... and add Perpetual Change and All Good People to that list of Yes classics ... not having to compete with Wakeman or Moraz, Howe dominates like he never would again ... and the results are remarkable ...

Why aren't Big Generator and Union on the list

To be serious, at least the albums including and after KTA should have been listed. Well, so far only one voted for other anyway (possibly Time and a Word), so just ignore me

The toughness for me was between Relayer, CttE and Tales, eventually I chose Relayer, just for the sake of Gates of Delirium. Well, half the album, worth it!

CTTE by a mile.

After that I would go with The Yes Album, Going For The One and finally Drama.

I have never truly loved Fragile or Relayer. Both contain moments of greatness but overall they are rather patchy to me, Fragile more so than Relayer. (The popularity of Roundabout baffles me greatly.)

Yessongs is enjoyable, but I must admit that I rarely listen to it. Don't care for the live version of CTTE on it, to be honest. Siberian Khatru on the other hand is just mind-blowingly good, as is Yours Is No Disgrace.

I don't have Tales yet and I am not in a hurry to get it either, judging by what I have heard from it on the Symphonic DVD (Ritual) I believe that there is just too much excellent prog to be acquired before that one!

I also own Tormato and Magnification, both substandard efforts IMO but Magnification is the more listenable record of these two.

The Ladder and 90125 are the two records I would really like to add to my Yes collection next.

Coz they're not on the list, but surely no Yes fan would vote for them above the classics? (although I have seen Union get votes in another poll!)

I've voted for Going For The One as I love it and I felt sorry for it only having 1 vote (and it has a spelling mistake).
