hi ho,

I'm looking for a special kind of Prog-Rock (as you might have guessed!?) :)
Well, I'm really (really^^) new in this 'scene', so I don't have any idea what I'm talking about... *gg*

I hardly know any bands from this genre besides 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor'...and I'm really into them right now

Especially songs (better: compositions) like 'Moya' oder 'Sleep'.
I've fallen for those songs (if i'm allowed to say it this way )

Now my question is:

Do you know some good emotional/melancholic Prog-Rock artists?

I mean, GYBE? Great!... But I want more, you know? :D

mfg

P.S.: I am emo...help :( *g*
(Don't take the title and my nickname too seriously: I hate Emos xD )

The genre you're talking about is called Post-Rock. It's a really interesting genre with a lot of talent. Some of the more prominent post-rock artists include:

Sigur Ros: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1566 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1566

Mogwai: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1641 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1641

Explosions in the Sky: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1746 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1746

A Silver Mt. Zion (a side project of Godspeed): http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1749 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1749

Do Make Say Think: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1784 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1784

Have fun exploring the genre; I'm sure you'll find lots you like!

Not necesarily, the only prog band he knows is GYBE!... I don't think he even knows what post rock is

An emo kid should like PoS because of their emo-like depression, especially on Remedy Lane and Perfect element, sometimes it sounds like they even over did it a bit. Should be accessible enough, too.

Well, he said he wanted bands that sound like GYBE, so I think post rock is a safe bet there.

And read the first post again... the oringinal poster isn't an emo kid, his name is a joke .

Sigur Ros is good

Many people say Coheed and Cambria sound like an emo band.  and they are (debatably) progressive.

hawthorne heights is NOT emo
falloutboy is NOT emo
My chemical romance is NOT emo

rites of spring is emo.

someone above me confused post-hardcore with post-rock. two totally different things.

Rashikal,
About your sig....

FUGAZI IS NOT f**kING EMO!!!!!
they are DC punk/hardcore. they are political in nature and there is very little emotional about them.

all the bands you listed as NOT being emo, ARE in fact emo because they are part of the modern emo scene.  I know that there was another earlier emo scene, but the scene that is alive (Sadly) today includes all of those bands you listed.  Don't you see the kids at the mall with the hair in their faces and the fall out boy t shirts?  emo kids.  they are part of the emo social scene.

bah.

fugazi's style was still a big influence and one of the first branch offs of traditional punk, these are the roots of emo.

i refuse to call falloutboy kids emo, i call them hipsters or scenesters that listen to music for the social status. in 10 years music like falloutboy will be dead like 80s hair bands and there will be a new scenester genre and kids will throw out their fallouboy shirts and get with the new scene.

and that wasnt my sig, i just used "-"s to separate from the top post...

so anyone here like trance? i love infected mushroom and prog ozric tentacles :D

If you're talking about me, then no, I didn't confuse the two, I just recommended some bands for the original poster based on what they actually asked for rather than just reading the thread title and posting about emo without realizing the real point of the thread .

Yeah, Sigur Ros is probably the least GYBE-esque band on the list. A Silver Mt. Zion is naturally a lot like GYBE since they came out of that band, but they're not one of my favourites and I think GYBE is a lot better. EITS is like GYBE but more guitar-based with less ambience, Mogwai is more focused and includes some electronic influences, and Do Make Say Think includes some jazz influences, most notably on their latest (and best) album, "Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn."

Sounds nice :)

I have nothing against electronic or jazz, so that wouldn't put me off^^

And still:
This board rules *gg*
