It depends. I see two different "eras" to Magellan. Their first two albums, Hour of Restoration and Impending Ascension are more keyboard dominated, whereas everything after that is much heavier on metal guitar.

I'm an oddball and really like most of Impending Ascension, but if you're more into the harder sound of Magellan, I would recommend Test of Wills first and then if you like that, continue forward.

Have only heard their two first albums. I think they're both very good. Nice mix of neo-prog and hard-rock/metal.

I have all of Magellans  works  and I think "Test of Wills" is their best effort , but you could perhaps try one of Trent Gardners side projects like  Explorers Club "age of impact" he also did a CD called  Leonardo "The Absolute Man" which is brilliant CD (IMO) features a great line up including James Labrie  (DT)  and  Mike Baker  (Shadow Gallery) and Steve Walsh (Kansas) plus many others  , but I`d be sticking with "Test of Wills" if its Magellan as a band you want to hear or perhaps try "Impossible Figures"

I  think the lyrics and keyboards on "Impending Ascension" are the best  out of all Magellans works unfortunaly this CD uses a drum machine for most of it and thats not to every ones taste
