My ideal (prog) band would have the following instruments Acoustic & Electric Guitars Multiple Keyboards Bass / Stick Various Percussion (maybe 2 guys, a la Bruford & Muir of KC) Flute & Violin (a la Mauro Pagani of PFM) For live shows, maybe an extra guitarist and keyboard player, though lead vocalist could play something when he's not singing. Speaking of vocalists, it would be great to have a male AND female lead singer! Now pick yours!

All of the above, plus horns - there's just not enough horns in prog. And the violin out front, not buried in the mix somewhere. My ideal or dream set up would consist of: Various Keyboards/Synthesizers (Analog synths like MiniMoog or Moog Voyager or ARP 2600, Rhodes, Hammond B3, Steinway Grand, Foot-pumped Harmonium, and a KORG Triton Extreme 88 or KORG OASYS 88) Acoustic and Electric Guitars, sitar, various lutes Electric/acoustic Violin Double Reed and single reed woodwinds Brass section Flute (concert flute, bansuri or quena) Bass (Fretted, Fretless, upright) Touch-style guitars (Warr Guitar or Mobius Megatar) Drums and various percussion
Well, I guess that covers all musical colors I could conceptualize. |

I think Gentle Giant is the example to follow one this one. Spock's Beard has a desent way of doing things to, I like them becaue Okumato and Morse compliment each other on keyboards nicely as does Morse and Morse on guitars. The perfect prog band? 2 Percussionists 1 Guitarist, switching between electric and acoustic 6 & 12 strings and a pedal steel 1 Bassist 1 Stickist/Warr Guitarist 1 Female Keyboardist/Singer. How about:
Chapman Stick Bass Saxophone Percussion, Drums and Electronics (samplers, sequencers etc. lots of weird noises!) ...and maybe trombone
That would be a pretty interesting lineup methinks. Dunno if it would be an ideal band though. |
