Two Bands that both have a big fanbase and both have earned their stripes as prog Titans, so who is better ? (some will say its like comparing apples to yada yada yada but thats the case with most of these polls)

Rush..
But it's close. Yes are brilliant. These days I probably listen to Yes more than Rush, but I've been into Rush for much longer. Rush were big Yes fans and after ditching their Led Zep copycat act, pursued more progressive music, having been inspired by the English prog giants of the day.

An extremely difficult decision but I had to go with Yes.
I've always found the influences of Rush a cross between the atmospheric sounds of Yes with the added rock drive of Led Zeppelin.
I love both bands but it has to be Yes.

Both are great bands, good musicians and both a hell of a lot better than Robbies Williams!!
Now, if that was the question Robbie or Rush or even Yes or Girls Aloud!!! I could quite easliy vote. As it stands I can't choose, I like 'em both...

Yes were the band that got me into prog and I side with them in a lot of discussions, but I have to go with Rush.Rush have put out good music consistently for 30 years with the same line-up since their 2nd album.Yes have a handful of great albums in a large catalogue that has as many or more forgettable albums than unforgettable albums.

Rush by a country mile. By the way, I find it interesting that
this poll clearly does not reflect the concert attendance
numbers. Yes can't put 15,000 in an arena anymore. Rush
however can still draw them out. Seeing Yes at the Garden last
year was kind of sad. Barely 7000. However I've been to
multiple Rush shows since Trails 02 and the lowest attendance was
12,000.

I can't vote. These groups are sooooooo different from each other!
As said above, Rush is a far more regular group than Yes. The last flash of glory in Yes discography as Going for the One; Rush has a lot of weak 80's albums, but they made a lot of good albums after Presto.
On the other hand, Yes was more risky, mainly in the CTTE - Relayer era. So, I just can't decide. Both are wonderful groups, and the only real difference between them nowadays is that Yes is dead, while Rush still kicks (with less power than in the good old days, but kicks).

You are right. Rush, to me, has matured more that Yes did. You can make a case that The Yes Album & The Ladder were made by different bands. The same can be said for Fly By Night & Roll The Bones.
Yes started as a prog band. Rush had to grow into it.

These are two of my favorite bands... Rush satisfy my more hard rock/metal prog taste while Yes satisfy my more symphonic/melodic prog taste (and there's also Genesis, KC, but thats another thread)... so anyway, i think when comparing these bands you have to look at their entire careers.
I think Rush and Yes both have phenominal careers and music, but i think Rush was able to create better music than Yes once they both moved on from their classical magnum opuses in the 1970s. Rush was clearly better than Yes in the 80s, and i think they continued to reign over Yes in the 90s and 00s - as far as studio releases. Don't get me wrong though, i still enjoy both bands' music from their entire careers.
My vote went to RUSH btw

Rush
This is really easy for me, every single Rush album in the past 32 years (31 with the current line up) has been solid. Rush has done more with 3 members as Yes has done with 20+ and 5 at a time.
While Geddy Lee is no Rick Wakeman, he is both Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, and I prefer one Geddy to both of them. And BB versus Neil Peart is an endless debate, Peart versus any other Yes drummer it is no contest. Howe may have Lifeson beat but if so its by a hair, my two favorite guitarists are almost too hard to compare.... That is until I put on La Villa Strangiato and Lifeson's best work defeats anything Howe has put up.
Yes made Big Generator, Tormato, 90125, and The Ladder. Where Rush never entirely abandonned being progressive, while Yes started prog and Rush didn't Rush brought it successfully through the 80s (progs dark days) and into the 90s and still do not lack at creating prog music. Yes gave up this fight 25 years ago and Rush had just gotten things started.
How can these polls be real??? I love Yes they influenced artists I love and they are one of the top 5 prog giants along with ELP, Genesis, Rush, and King Crimson.... but this poll makes me think that Yes fanboys rule this message board honestly.

and those who said Yes changed more, have you heard all of Rush's studio albums? I played Test for Echo in my car and then Hemispheres and my friends thought I changed bands. Listen to all the Rush albums chronologicallly and you'll hear dramatic changes every album. Rush is different from Fly by Night which is different from Caress of Steel. Each album is completely different and they still make amazing music with creativity and diversity.

My point exactly! Rush has always embraced change while staying true to their musical vision.
Yes' vision was pretty clear to start with, & the mined the hell out of it. But they "Put me through some changes boy, sort of like a Waring blender."
Sorry, it just slipped out.

Rush has been one of my top 5 (if not my favorite) bands since I was 10
years old (I'm now 35). They get the easy vote. Just talented, great
songs, sense of humor, although Neil's lyrics sometimes veer toward the
verbose. Not that Yes isn't great, but Rush owns. Just check out the
Rush In Rio and R30 DVD's to find out why. Still cool after all these
years...while Yes feels like a "weren't we great when" band. Like I said, Yes is still good, but Rush hasn't lost a step.
