Let's not forget JS is Vai's teacher. However I'm sure most people here will choose vai because his sound is closer to prog. I saw vai a month ago and he was amazing. His technique, his compositions, his F*ck!ng INCREDIBLE band....everything.
However having seen the first two G3 concerts and owing some vai and some satriani cds I have to say I'm more attracted by Satriani's playing.....

Wow ... let us quickly forget that. IF ANY person deserves to be called Vai's "teacher", then it would be Zappa.

Not just his SOUND, but ALL aspects of his music. Like you say in the second sentence.

Satriani did give Vai lessons, and can therefore be called his teacher. I don't really listen to either of their music. Guitarist solo albums generally don't appeal to me as much right now. They both do have some great songs and they are both great players; I'm not going to choose.

Both absolute w**kers!!!!
Jesss kidddddiiiiinnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!.........................., MeR!
Actually this is a pretty hard choice to make. I really think that Satriani (I only heard his first three albums) is only convincing in his larder souding tracks. Once he gets smooth and spacey, he sounds very phoney to my ears!!
However I think I will go for Vai from what I heard.

I think they are both great guitar players but both are way overrated as composers. I've listened to pretty much everything by Vai and I have the majority of Satriani's work and I am not a fan of their compositions. Especially Vai's ones are not that great imho, maybe because of the hype that they're surrounded with. There are guitar players around (see Jeff Beck) who can write a song around two notes and they are a thousand times more effective. IMHO.

Yesterday there was a Vai concert with a metropole orchestra on TV. It was recorded this July in the Netherlands. Vai wrote the bulk of the music for this concert and I have to admit he did a really good job.
I havn't heard enough Satriani to really judge, I only own one Vai album so I'm not in a position to judge.

Bull*hit how do you know that? I hate it when people say that.... "Oh I'll vote for Portnoy of course.....he's much faster and more creative than neil peart is ever going to be"
The point is which one appeals you..... Which one YOU enjoy the most. To know who's better you have to put them next to each other and tell them to play the same things but still I think you wouldnt be able to say.......

satch owns vai.
I simply cannot stand Vai's personality on or off stage, and I think overall he focuses way too much on image and flash rather than content of music.

Vai not only studied music with Satriani, he also graduated from Berklee school, and studied theory with several jazz musicians and of course he learned a lot from master Zappa (his main influence).

I much prefer Satriani. He's a much more melodic guitar player at puts more emotion into his playing IMO.
MikeEnRegalia,
Satriani was Vai's first teacher before Vai fell in love with Zappa's
music and you can still hear a lot of Satriani's influence in Vai's
playing, particularly when they're jamming together.

Vai has one good song (For the love of God), Satriani has two(Always with me, always with you and Mountain Song) . So, I choose Satriani. I'm not really fond of either's playing, it's somehow ear-numbing.

Vai - he's far more inventive/creative than Satch.
I'd like to choose Satch, because his mastery of melody is stronger than Vai's, but I kind of stop caring about melody when Vai lets loose the fireworks.

Yea, I saw that MacAlpine and Sheehan played with him on the G3 DVD, and I was quite pleased. They're both incredible, incredible musicians. However, among all of the talent up there, his drummer seemed rather mediocre.

You weren't wrong. Satriani did at first teach Vai a bit of playing early on. I'm sure Mike knows this, but he was referencing to Vai being in Zappa's band for awhile.

That's also bullsh*t. You wouldn't be able to judge between their techniques, if you do, you'll probably judge on base of who has made much more impression on you and what sound you prefer the most.. That's all..

Ahh.. too bad. When I see his stage performance, it makes me see the guitarist with great technique who's playing with great emotion. All I see is just a man who enjoys music and sings with his guitar.
Besides, even if his stage performance wasn't to my liking, I'd probably have prefered it over seeing him standing in one place and without any movement..
